BHS BEGINNINGS Another four years have gone by again, but they aren't just any four years; they are my four years of high school. As many people at BHS know, I have been very pleased to be able to attend Boonsboro High School. I've learned a lot in these past four years. I've learned that there are so many wonderful opportunities open to anyone if one will only strive for them. The opportunities are everywhere; just be sure to look for them. I've also learned that there are people, particularly in our school, who are willing to help you find and take advantage of the opportunities, because the people at BHS CARE. They are interested in others. This one factor makes our school what it is today. Caring keeps everyone together and will keep the school together as long as it continues. I have tried to care enough to keep this yearbook together. Hopefully, I have succeeded. After months of hard work done by the Chieftain staff, I believe we have given the school a book full of memories that students of BHS will cherish forever. None of this could have been accomplished, however, without the help of Mr. and Mrs. Myerly, Shauna and Katie, Larry Allen, the Chieftain staff, Mr. Lewis, and all of my friends who have helped me when I needed them. I will never be able to thank them all enough for being patient and putting up with me and caring enough to be there when I needed them. 2 A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL As you look at your yearbook in future years, you will be catching a glimpse of a very special time in your lives. Those years will have provided you with experiences that have helped to make you what you are today. Your yearbook staff has made certain that those memories live long after high school in both picture and word. This particular year has been an interesting one. All of us have been adjusting to our new, beautiful school building, after a year of unbelievable construction turmoil last year. We have enjoyed and appreciated our facilities; and with the arrival of the rest of our furniture and equipment, we will find new and better ways to utilize what we have. This has been a good year overall. We have been successful in athletics. Our fine arts program is emerging on new horizons. Our school continues to maintain its solid reputation in Washington County and throughout the surrounding area. People continue to move to our area so that their sons and daughters may attend our school. We have much to feel good about. Anything that is worthwhile does not just happen. It takes planning, commitment, and dedication. We have been blessed with people both in this school and in our community who have given of themselves to make our school what it is. As you read over your yearbook I hope you will be saying, as I am sure I will, It was good to have been a part of it. 3 Regina Myers V I WBS not aware of the moment when I first crossed the threshold fe. What was the power that made me open out into this vast mystery; d fcf the forest at midnight! When in the morning I looked upon the It ill a moment that I was no stranger in this world, that the in 'thorn name and form had taken me in its arms in the form of my ven JO, in death the same unknown will appear as ever known to m cause I love this life, I know I shall love death as well . . . He helped the yearbook when no one else would, brought it out of debt, and has helped improve it. The '76 Chieftain is the last book he will advise about; next year Mrs. Becky Neikirk will take over. We extend our sincere thanks to Mr. Lewis for his support and advice through the years. 6 When things go wrong, as they sometimes will. When the road you're trudging seems all up hill. When the funds are low and the debts are high. And you want to smile, but you have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit. Rest if you must, but don't you quit. BEGINNING TO... LEARN 7 If you wish to reach the highest, begin at the lowest. In prosperity, be moderate; in adversity, be prudent. Pleasure is fleeting; honor is immortal. Prudence can accomplish all things. BEGINNING ... NEW EXPERIENCES 8 9 BEGINNING ... FRIENDSHIPS 10 Friendship is a Priceless Gift that cannot be bought or sold. But its value is far greater than a mountain made of gold — For gold is cold and lifeless, it can neither see nor hear. And in the time of trouble it is powerless to cheer — It has no ears to listen, no heart to understand. It cannot bring you comfort or reach out a helping hand So when you ask God for a Gift, be thankful if he sends Not diamonds, pearls, or riches, but the love of real true friends. 11 12 I 111 .11 Choose always the way that seems the best however rough it may be. Custom will render it easy and agreeable. BEGINNING... TODAY 13 CLASS CABINET Teri Rhoderick, Yolanda Netz, Leslie Cruger, Marsha Shank. Debbie Jenkins. ABSENT: Sue Judd and Ron Morrow. Commencement exercises were held in the new gym and a class banner was made for decoration that night. A senior class play, separate from the tournament of plays was presented for two evenings in the winter, despite snow and cancellation of school. An organization was formed to promote pep” in school by seniors which resulted in a very Cheery breezeway during spirit days. Many members of the class won various awards for scholastic achievement, athletic accomplishments, and other achievements. Through perseverance and the guidance of the faculty, they made it to graduation, June 7, 1976, a day to be remembered by many. 41 zt? ss no OF 76 43 CLASS OF '76 GRADUATES The class banner of 1976. 44 Unprecedented crowds attended graduation. Valedictorian Linda Paul - The Universe Is Change. Salutatorian David Bell — The Old Order Changeth. Deborah Wyand - To Thine Own Self Be True. Susan Toms receives an award for her musical achievements. The Class of 1976 awaits the awarding of diplomas. Class President Tracy Carr presents Mr. Robeson with the class gift. The Class of '76 began many new traditions by holding graduation ceremonies in the gym, where many more people could attend commencement, and by having a class banner made by the art classes, to be later used at class reunions. The graduates of this bicentennial year are wished the best of luck in the years ahead; wherever they go, whatever they do. 45 John Nolte receives his long-awaited diploma from Mr. Roland Hebb. Susan Roll receives her class flower, a white rose, presented to all senior girls through the kindness of Page and Betty Otto. Tears and a smile were seen on Diane Ballam’s face after graduation. BHS' bicentennial class walks out of the gym for the very last time as a class. Each today is your own personal graduation . . . Your private mark in time between the past and the future . . . Your own farewell to yesterday, your welcome to tomorrow. Graduation night was a time for mixed emotions — both happiness and sadness - as Sandy Cook, Julie Shobe, and Karen Hannigan show here. 46 AWARDS ASSEMBLY Coach Vaughn is given a gift from her softball team. New Student Council president Diana Ritenour is sworn in by outgoing president Gary Frey. Senior class officers are awarded for their efforts by advisor Mr. Brunner. The Student Council honored Miss Margaret Smith for her years of hard work in other activities as well as teaching. 47 HCC president Mary McGolerick is awarded by advisor Mrs. Mary Luther. Mr. Don Lewis presents Ron Morrow with a yearbook award. Cindi Weedon is named FHA's outstanding officer by Mrs. Harrison. Coach Scott makes Marie Grosz and Tinna Hartle honorary captains of the girls' track team. 48 Shawn Coulter is thanked for her hard work on the Arrowhead by Mrs. Becky Neikirk. Steve Abbott receives an award from Mr. Robeson. Once again, Linda Paul is awarded for winning the Atwood Spelling Contest. Mr. Roger Moore is presented with a plaque in appreciation for his dedication to the school. 49 In keeping tradition, seniors file out of the auditorium first to the sound of their class song Dream On. 1975 M.V.A.L. Our J.V. football team had problems, but the varsity team became MVAL co-champs, despite the loss of the homecoming game to Middletown. The Varsity Basketball team was a super success. They won the district title, went on to state semi-finals and lost. The track team, composed of girls and boys, also had a successful season. The Warrior baseball team were champions of the MVAL, also. As for the girls' teams, the under-ettes won over the seniorettes once again. The girls basketball team made it to the district playoffs and the soft-ball team also had a successful season. So, all in all, it was a very good year for the Boonsboro Warriors and Warriorettes. 87 VARSITY CHEERLEADERS LEFT TO RIGHT: Jenny Stottlemyer. The year was filled with college preparatory tests for some and preparation for the great senior year for all. Once again, this year's freshman class has surpassed former freshman classes in money-making. This money is raised for the prom they will work on in their junior year. Many freshmen were active in the Student Council and other clubs. For the first time, there was a freshman class play at BHS; perhaps the first of many. One year down; three to go. Best of luckl 147 STUDENT GOVERNMENT As president of Boonsboro High's Student Government for the past year, I must confess that I did not do everything that I possibly could, it would be foolish for me to state that I have. However, I do believe we have moved into a new period , a new era . Even if that era would be started just because we have moved into a building, its not just the physical change that is apparent, but the noticeable change in the general atmosphere of the school. I have visited many other schools in our county and there is none that can compare to Boonsboro High's prestige. Trying new ideas and working in unison are very important to success and establishing good feelings toward one another. I had one of these ingredients, I unfortunately could not find the other. ( The Sound of Music was a new idea for Boonsboro and was pulled off as a big success.) How people will judge my performance, only time can tell. For, after others have held the responsibility that I have held, then the comparison and the judging will begin. In some ways, I guess if I were rated as a lousy president compared to others after me, I will be pleased. It only means that the representation and leadership at Boonsboro will be increasingly greater and not increasingly worse. In deep admiration and gratitude. 148 STUDENT GOVERNMENT •CERS. Clara Giles.
