Friendliness to all classmates and associ- ates was one characteristic which described both girls. They were always ready to help a friend--old or new. Both girls were active members of band, girls' glee club, and journalism. MYRNA MILLS Marilyn was a member of St. Paul Luther- an Church, Luther League, and choir. Myrna was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church where she participated in choir, Youth Fellowship, and was a Sunday School and church organist. Each task which they undertook was completed to the best of their ability. There will always be a place in the sen- iors' hearts for the memories of these two girls. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1961: As you leave Boone Valley High School to take your place in society, I hope that you will use the various concepts that our school has entrusted to you. Each of you have cer- tain responsibilitiesg to uphold our excellent tradition of scholarshipg to become a good citizeng and to continue to develop yourself mentally, morally, and physically. It has been a privilege and a pleasure for me to work with you. I offer each of you my best wishes for a happy and useful future. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1961: You are the most important person in the world, for what you do, what you think, and what you are will not only affect your life but will affect those about you. The great- est contribution that you can made to soci- ety is to be a citizen capable and willing to contribute to the welfare of that society. This requires that you develop your talents and abilities to their utmost. You have now completed one stage of the development process - high school. May God grant to each of you the deter- mination, perseverance, and opportunity to further develop your talents and abilities so that your contribution may be one of ever- lasting value. Congratulations and best wishes. I can hardly wait to hear what I'm going to say next. Qfdatowq In the year 1949, twenty of this year's seniors began school at Renwick, three began at Hardy, and two began at Vernon. Those who started at Renwick were L. Anderson, H. Bisbee, B. Clowes, B. Engstrom, I. Erwin, E. Hebner, A. Henriksen, M. Huntley, R. Huntley, G. Jensen, S. Kraft, D. McCurry, P. McCurry, I. McGowan, G. Nerem, I. Odland, V. Tate, D. Thompson, N. Tincher, and R. Veldhouseg those at Hardy were T. Anderson, I. Johnson, and D. Kitleyg those at Vernon were I. French and W. Hefty. Our grade school years were filled with learning and mischief. M. Ander- son joined our class in 4th grade and I. Tokheim in 5th grade. I. Thompson joined us in 2nd grade although she left and rejoined us later. We began seventh grade as Renwick Community School when the three stu- dents from Hardy joined us. The Vernon students were added in eighth grade and we became Boone Valley Community School. Our high school days began with Freshman Initiation. Our class officers were L. Anderson, Presidentg B. Engstrom, Vice-President, Marilyn Prilipp, Secretary: M. Huntley, Treasurer. Our sophomore class float won third place in the 1959 Boone Valley Home- coming parade. We elected E. Hebner, Presidentg T. Anderson, Vice-Presi- dentg J. Tokheim, Secretaryg R. Huntley, Treasurer to be our class officers. Homecoming, selling refreshments at games, and the Prom highlighted our junior year. Wayne Stupka and JoAnn Thompson moved here to join our ranks. D. Neuberger, Presidentg B. Clowes, Vice-President: P. McCurry, Secretary, and J. Hansen, Treasurer were elected to lead the junior class. Finally our last year arrived. We chose D. Neuberger, L. Anderson, W. Hefty and R. Huntley respectively to guide our class. Everyone was planning ahead to their future after graduation. Important events of our senior year were Homecoming, senior trip, Skip Day, Junior-Senior Prom, and of course, Bac- calaureate and Commencement. J We, the seniors of Boone Valley High, being of unsound mind and questionable character do hereby bequeath our many talents and abilities to the poor souls who are left here. To the juniors we will our depleted class treasury. To the sophomores we will our sense of responsibility. To the freshman worms we will our ability to stay in hot water. It's lot of fun, isn't it, boys? We, Larry Anderson and Tony Anderson, will the NEAT club to Steve Packard knowing that your club will never be as great as ours was. I, Merle Anderson, will my bowling ability to Larry Tincher so he can construc- tively occupy his time in Eagle Grove. I, Harold Bisbee, will my ability of driving down the middle of the road to Nancy Richards. We, Bill Clowes and Denis Kitley, will our ability to get along with the girls to Harlan Fisher. I, Bonita Engstrom, will my ability to get along with all boys to Dawn Clowes although I'm sure she doesn't need it. I, Judy Erwin, will all my late nights to Kathy Emmert hoping she doesn't take advantage of them because I'm having too much fun. I, Judy French, will my ability to lose my voice at strategic moments to Don n Kelling because he'd be better off without it sometimes. I, Janet Hansen, will all of my letter-writing equipment to Glenda Smith be- cause hers is getting worn out. We, Judy Hansen and Ed Hebner, will the romance of the year to Sharon Bos- worth and Fred Hansen. I, Wanda Hefty. will my long and dangerous fingernails to Terry Nerem, but I hope they don't get caught in his saxophone keys. I, Alan Henriksen. will the basketball statistics to Ron Klasse hoping he'll break record next year. We. Mary Huntley and Janice Odland, will our rock collections to Roxie White hoping that she'll be able to use them. I. Ruby Huntley, will my quiet manner to Kathleen Helmke. I, Gordon Jensen, will all my beautiful nurses at St. Mary's to Clair Nerem. I, Judy Ann Johnson, will all my straight A's to Gary Nerem because that's the only way he'll get them. I, Sandra Kraft, will my last name to Jeri Kraft till she finds a new one. I, Diane McCurry, will my car to Joyce Hefty knowing it will get better care than when I had it. I, Penny McCurry, will my fingernail file to Alice McDonald so she can de- fend herself in mixed chorus. I. Jim McGowan, will my horn to Randy Palmer so he can serenade Penny. I, Gloria Nerem, will all my jokes to James Anderson so he can keep conversa- tion late at night. I, Dean Neuberger, will my farm to Carol Arne so she can keep her horse there. I, Wayne Stupka, will my new car to Dennis May for all his trips around town. l. Verle Tate, will all my Kanawha girls to Dave Clowes and Reggie Tate be- cause if I don't give them away they'll take them. We, Donna and JoAnn Thompson, will all of our fun to Pearl Riley. I. Norman Tincher, will my colorful vocabulary to Kenny Eekhoff. I, Jerry Tokhiem, will my quiet manner' to Galen Engstrom in hopes he can fool everyone the way I did. I, Roberta Veldhouse, will my government answers to Nancy Helmlch. I'm a French artist, an artist of the future. and so I'm going to visualize paintings depicting each of the seniors ten years from now. As you might have guessed Monsieur Dean Neuburger still has farming in his blood, because I find him as a professor, teaching animal husbandry at the Sorbonne here. And, in his spare time, you can find him on the 'field of battle, the athletic field--as the vivacious head cheerleader for the University. Next, my focal point is on Merle Anderson, in the middle of a baseball field Now known as Merle Big League' Anderson, he has just signed with the New York Yankees for the sniffling amount of 385, OOO for his first year. I can picture Jerry Tokheim as Master of Ceremonies of the popular French surgical television program, BLOOD, working closely with his old classmate, Dr. Gordon L. Jensen, who is watched by thousands as he makes dangerous in- cisions each week. My next painting may seem a bit strange to you for I find Gloria Nerem, now a medical secretary, with her crisply laundered white uniform and short- hand pad and pencil out in the center of a very agricultural hayfield. There must be a mistake somewhere, for I always thought she was interested in the town of Hayfield and not in a field of hay. Two of the Boone Valley seniors of '61 went to an exclusive French beauty school. Mimi Uudyy Erwin and Yvette fwanday Hefty's recent display of the coiffure of the former Roberta Veldhouse was simply superb. For an evening of entertainment, the other night I went to the Theatre de Mokiere in gay Paree. The program turned out to be especially interesting and cultural because the famous Thompson girls were in the leading roles, featured as France's best and most attractive dancers of the ballet. Also in the entertainment field is found the extremely talented Penny Mc- Curryg her superb operatic voice has brought her much success. Our friend Vele Tate is now an honorable judicial officer. Things have changed a good deal--Verle is now fearlessly upholding all righteousness and is not swayed by anyone in the least. The former Janice Odland who now works as a marriage counselor in her spare time, can verify this. She is now serving a sentence for double-parking her French poodle. I see Monsieur Kitley's interests have not changed too much, for he's now President of the National Wine Brewers of France. Denny's interest in the transporting of milk changed because he insisted the open road and finally ended up in my country. Monsieur Norman Tincher has been the French Chief Excutive's private barber for several years now and is also highy recommended in the art of giving G. I. haircuts. Monsieur Hebner llves in France nowg he's a guide for American tourists. I paint him standing patiently at the customs gate, being so very polite and courteous. Remember those girls who made plans to go to A. I. B. ? Incidentally that stands for 'Actively Interested in Boys. Janet Hansen: She's been taking highly confidential and advanced training at the Geiger Banking School in Sheldon, Iowa. Bonita Engstrom has become Mr. Movick's secret service sec- retary in Washington, D. C. g and he can even affort to pay her a salary, since he's been promoted recently. Judy Hansen is doing secretarial work at the Idelwald Airport, waiting 'til she's earned enough money for a one-way ticket to France. And now a courtroom scene. Picture a stern, yet kindly judge, Your honor, William Clowes, who instructs the jury on its charges after lawyer Harold Bisbee has given his summation. The 19'71 International Business Woman of the Year is Miss Judy Ann John- son. Ithink, back in '61, we all knew she would go a long way in the business world. I'm sure you remember that lead cornet in the high school bandg James little boy blew McGowan is now the most famous orchestra leader and jazz soloist in all France. Diane McCurry asked me to paint this sign for her: 'REPAIRS OF ALL KINDS. Remember all the trouble she used to have with transmissions lock- ing, brakes shoes bending, and so on? STUPKA'S SPECIALLY SPEEDY TAXI SERVICE is another sign I've been asked to paint. You know Wayne had plenty of training for this early in life, but now he drives a company car. Now on the sports' team in the Olympics, Sandy Kraft seems to always be practicing. Sandy, must you dribble that cotton-pickin' ball in the bathtub. Alan Henriksen is definitely aiding mankind, and in a most practical way. His electronic brain can actually correctly predict the winner of any horse race. Now here's a painting of a nursery rhyme with a kind of a twist. There's Maryg she's crying 'cause her little lamb just went to the pasture. Mary Hunt- ley shouldn't sit and cry all day, should she? I'm French, this picture is French, and my subject is Frenchg Judy French, that is. lncidently she recently has taken up house-keeping for a certain young man. Actually, anyone can see that now she certainly isn't Frenchg instead she's--that would be telling. Because France is France, and French girls are French, I paint tall, dark, and handsome Tony Anderson pursuring his main objectives with the aid of his baritone horn, fine singing voice, and his extremely fast feet. Such people always succeed, and in France. I've been frantically searching for a golden gilt frame for my nest painting, which is to be placed in the Boone Valley Art Museum soon. It's a portrait of a young lady, our Queen of Queens. She's wearing deep red velvet, a crown of diamonds, and jewels such as have never dazzled anyone's eyes. You can probably guess easily that this most beautiful image is of--Yes--Mademoiselle Ruby Huntley. Back in '61 maybe Red fLarryj Anderson will remember repeating these words: Friends, Romans and countrymen, lend me your ears. Look who's graduating after ALL these years. Seniors of '61, this is you--10 years hence. Stark reality, wasn't it? Hope you could stand it. Processional - - - - -------- - -------- - - - - - - Instrumental Ensemble Invocation ---- - - The Rev. The Bobcats had a good football season in that they won the North Star Con- ference title and trophy in the first year of its existence. The Bobcats had a 3-0 conference record. The Bobcats played exciting ball all season and were only out of one ball game. In the season's final statistics, the Bobcats had scored just four points less than the opposition. Quarterback Ed Hebner set a school record in total offense with 1, 158 yards of which 768 were gained rush- ing. Captain Larry Anderson and Clair Nerem were the team's leading defenders. However, the team played much better basketball than their record would indicate. On several occasions the Bobcats gave the top teams in thelconference very close ball games. The players improved as the season went along and the prospects for a good team next year appear bright. 45 42 36 66 39 51 53 ' overtime Corwith-Wesley 68 68 Klemme Dows 59 43 Corwith-Wesley LuVerne 59 38 LuVerne Fertile 62 52 Rockwell-Swaledale Franklin Cons. 89 48 Goldfield Goldfield 44 59 Sheffield Kanawha 54 54 Ventura NORTH STAR CONFERENCE TOURNEY BV 45 Goldfield 50 SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT BV 59 Rockwell-Swaledale '76 MARTIN OIL, INC. , Hardy LEUTHOLD 8: GRIFFITH, Eagle Grove 70 54 53 56 65 69 56 I DEAN NEUBERGER Foo tb all Basketb all Track ED HEBNER Football Basketball Baseball Track LARRY ANDERSON Baseball Football DENIS KITLEY Football JERRY TOKHEIM Basketball Football BILL CLOWES Football Basketball Track GORDON JENSEN Football Track COACH SHICKELL Boys' Basketball Assistant Football Baseball QUAKER OATS CO. The young Bobcats were busy learning throughout the year and could not get on the victory trail. With many of the girls being freshmen, a sound foundation was being laid for future years. Although the Bobcats didn't win as often as they had hoped to, they still played some good basketball. The team's best game both offensively and defensively was against Ventura, a team who was then undefeated and became one of the quarterfinalists in the girls' State Tourna- ment. 24 West Bend 30 36 Kanawha 39 34 Corwith-Wesley 45 34 Corwith-Wesley 41 26 Dows 40 32 LuVerne 40 25 LuVerne 56 26 Rockwell-Swaledale 33 36 Fertile 20 28 Goldfield 46 22 Franklin Cons. 43 38 Sheffield-Chapin 59 39 Goldfield 59 48 Ventura 58 NORTH STAR CONFERENCE TOURNEY BV 47 Kanawha 37 SECTIONAL TOURNAMENT BV 47 Corwith-Wesley 59 TINYS CONFECTIONERY STANLEY MCCURRY INSURANCE 'E RUBY HUNTLEY Co -Captain GLORIA NEREM Co -Captain MARY HUNTLEY SANDRA KRAFT IANICE ODLAND COACH SMITH Girls ' Basketball, Football, and Track STEVE PALMER-TRUCKING WILBUR NISSEN 8a CO. The Bobcats had a creditable '61 track season by finishing in the upper division in five out of six large meets and won dual meets against Goldfield and Corwith-Wesley. Cold and damp weather early in the season handicapped the Bobcats in conditioning for the Pochantas Relays, but the boys came on fast after that to finish the season in good form. Ron Klassie qualified in the district meet to participate in the state meet in both the 220 yard dash and the high jump. 80 Boone Valley 112 Boone Valley 82 LuVerne 55 Boone Valley Bronco Relays ----- Conference Meet - - 685 Boone Valley 43 Franklin District Meet - - - 57 25 61 14 55 1 Y TRACK SCORES Goldfield Corwith-Wesley Klemme Goldfleld Boone Valley - - Boone Valley Goldfield Dows Dual Meet Dual Meet Quadrangular Meet 3rd At Belmond 5th At Belmond Quadrangular Meet Boone Valley - Tied for Sth out of 20 At Eagle Grove 2 FIRST ROW: I. The Bobcats were troubled by the inability to score runs and were shut out in three of the losses. The best game offensively was the Goldfield game. Doing most of the hurling in a losing cause was Marv Hoffman. Mel Sherwood, a distant cousin, comes to visit the Browns and with him comes Claire De Lune, a not so youthful actress. Mel is a TV writer who decides to get a first hand glimpse of a typical American family. The Browns do not behave as their prototypes on TV. It takes Claire to create some situa- tions to provide excitement. BOONE VALLEY ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE '6Zcw477Zaqe The Senior class presented three one-act plays on Wednesday, May 10, 1961.
