These winners were se- lected from a group of sopho- mores who had achieved schol- astic superiority durlng their iunior high years. The awards are given on the basis of con- duct, service to the school and community, and willing attitude toward school work. Mr. Moore, Mr. Seaton, and the iunior high faculty chose students who had excelled in these traits. They also received a ten dollar bill or a gold medal. U This page is sponsored by RlEKENBERG'S 33 SCHUUL ' GUVl5'RNMli'NT In making Boone High School the best from which to graduate, it is necessary to have capable leaders to perform the essential tasks in maintain- ing a smooth-running school. Just as it is the responsibility of every citizen of a country to participate in elections, so is it necessary for all members of a school body to elect the people they feel will be most capable of carrying out the responsibilities to be bestowed upon them. Before election time this year, the Student Council decided to have two student body presi- dents, one for each semester. I 'W' Because of his high scholastic records, his active participation in school functions, and his concern for the students as a whole, the student body elected Denny Collis as president the first semester. Taking over this office the second se- mester was Kenny Sparks who is also senior class vice president. For senior class officers, Tom Rinker seemed to fill the bill of president most expertly. His desire to work, combined with his pleasant personality, were im- portant factors in his being elected. Kenny Sparks, that spark of speed we received from Newton last year, quickly gained popularity in his ability to get along with people and was elected vice president. Last but not least is our basketball star, that cute little gal by the name of Mary Courter, who fills the post of secretary- treasurer. Wallace Arringdale leads the junior class as class president. He was undoubtedly elected for his interest in the iunior class rights, and also for his pleasing smile and outstanding record in football. For a supporting team Larry Bergloff, that rough and tough go-getter of our squad, was placed as vice president to Wallace, and Sue Grant, a cute, pert, sweet, personality girl known to all, as secretary. The third members of our school governmental body are the sophomore class officers. For president, Larry Meyers took over to stand up for his class, with Betty McElyea serving as vice president, and a very capable one as shown in her interest in school functions during the past. Taking notes and acting as secretary, is that bright-eyed Carolyn Kirk, Well, that completes our student leaders for this year, l955, and under their capable guidance we can better learn and understand the problems facing us as leaders of tomorrow. ji ff T- I' 'X W, ff -ff ,sv 4-.J TEA QQ-1xl .Tx I-T' A-3 HC Q d, , I fd m 0-51' if N Q!! After adding to the spirit of the pigskin season with their clever and color- ful halftime performances, the band completed its outdoor season and assumed the title of the Boone High Concert Band. Contributing to the spiritual aspect of the yuletide season, the band performed three pieces including Meditation from Thais and Christmas Festival by Anderson in the Christmas program held December l2. With the arrival of the March concert, the band proved the worth of its year's practice with the fine performance of such selections as The Universal Judg- ment by DeNardis and Procession of the Nobles by Rimsky-Korsakov. On the lighter side, the band played Carousel by Rodgers and Singer's Bathsheba. Also featured in the concert was a cornet solo, Bellstedt's La Mandolinata, by Richard Alber. The season rounded out with a fine showing at contest. Congratulations to Mr. Bartholomew and the band for a very successful season! ORCHESTRA Wind instruments and strings alike, under the direction of Konrad School, once again fused to form the very fine organization known as the Boone High School Orchestra. Blending their talents with those of the band and chorus in the Christmas concert, the orchestra presented several selections including the beautiful Prelude and Siciliana from the Cavalleria Rusticana. With no maior trips or engagements, the orchestra concentrated the major portion of the year's work on the February concert. Featured in this year's concert was the appearance of Phyllis Jenkins, a 9th grader from Springfield, Ohio, who, ac- companied by the orchestra, presented the difficult Piano Concerto in A Minor by Grieg. The Orchestra mastered such selections as The Merry Wives of Windsor Overture by Nicolai and the Libuse Overture by Smetana. The string orchestra presented the Serenade in E-Flat by Suk and The Old Canal by Ahrendt. Besides playing for other school functions during the year, the orchestra made superior showings in the various music contests. Mr. Scholl and the orchestra are to be commended for a very fine year. To be or not to be that is the question. Friends, Romans and Countrymen, lend me your ears. But, on the other hand, it free trade was abolished . . These lines and phrases can be heard coming from the speech room practically any night after school. The hard work has paid off this year for Mr. Fitzgerald and Mr. McCartan in the plays, debates, and individual speakers. The basis of all the speech work is the Speech Activities Club. From this group are chosen the casts for the plays. The plays this year were Fog Island and The Curious Savage. The casts of these plays are to be commended for their fine work. They were coached, this year, by Mr. McCartan. The debate team, their coach, Mr. Fitzgerald, and other speech contestants at- tended a Central Iowa Conference meet at Newton in which Boone was well repre- sented. ln the local contest the work put in on the radio speaking groups, the original oratory, and the extemporaneous speaking was very evident. This change gave the Student Council more time to devote to school affairs. Elections for new membership and for new officers are to be held in May each year for the first semester of the following year and in January for the second semester. One half of the homerooms are to elect representatives in May and the other half are to elect representatives in January. Each representative will serve for two semesters. This will always leave some experienced council members present after each election. After a vigorous campaign and much speechmaking and handshaking, Denny Collis was elected Student Body President for the first semester. Other officers elected were: vice president, David Fitzsimmons, secretary, Cay Munn, treasurer, Bob Barry, and sergeant-at-arms, Daryl Murken. Kenny Sparks proved to be another top flight president as he was elected to hold the presidential gavel the second semester. Other able officers were: vice president, Daryl Murken, Secretary, Mary Courter, treasurer, Darrell Kruse, and sergeant-at-arms, Bill Larson. DOLPHIN CLUB The Dolphin Club had a very busy year in '54 and '55, In the fall they elected their new officers as follows: president, Mary Longworth, vice president, Carol Arringdale, and secretary, Mary Wiemer. After electing their officers, the club took in new members. Early in January the girls began practicing on their numbers for the show. The theme for this year's show was Heavenly Daze. The hard work of all the members, plus the en- couragement of Miss Vanderbeck, the sponsor of the group, made the show a big success. One of the club's newest proiects was the organization of the Minnows. The Minnows are a group of girls who also enjoy synchronized swimming. Most of the members are interested in becoming Dolphins when they are a little bet- ter qualified. The Minnows also took part in the Dolphin show this spring. 2.5 Q ' I + 2 53- l 1 ' 'f 'f' , M , 2..- l' 58 This page is sponsored by C. J. The fast break employed by Coach Larry Gillespie will not soon be forgotten. This, added with an extreme will to win and the fine coaching of Mr. Gillespie, head coach, and Mr. Honeck, assistant coach, accounts for the fine showing of the team throughout the year. Boone's record of twelve games won and six lost, which placed them in third place in the conference, is very good in anybody's league. On top of this fine showing in scheduled play, the Toreadors advanced to the district tournament when their hopes of a state title were dashed by a strong Ames five. Opening the season with a roar, the Toreadors rushed through their first four games winning from North, Nevada, Carroll, and Webster City respectively. Boone's first conference game was played against Grinnell who promptly handed the boys their first defeat. Smarting from this defeat, the boys took out their wrath on Oskaloosa and Eagle Grove, beating them in that order. The team then traveled to Ames, last year's conference champions, and were given their second loss of the season. The boys then began to show top form as they visited and beat Denison. Rising to their true ability, they sent undefeated Marshalltown home with their first defeat of the season. The boys then visited the washer city, returning with a victory over the Cardinals. Looking for revenge, the boys got it by handing Grinnell a twelve point licking. Continuing in the victory department, the team walked over Perry, winning by a 20 point margin. With their coach unable to be with the team and guide them, the boys were unable to pull a game with Oskaloosa out of the fire. Once again the Ames boys handed the Toreadors a defeat. Still without their coach, the boys traveled to Marshalltown only to be defeated by the boys destined to be conference champions. The team clinched third place by de- feating the Newton Cardinals in the last game before the district. ln their first game in the district the Toreadors were knocked out of play by the Ames Little Cyclones. All in all this has been a very successful season and we've been proud of the team in every game they have played. Under the able leadership of Coach Brookhart, the Boone High swimmers won two meets and lost six. Victories were over East High both times. To close the season, Boone sent six of the Teamsters to the state meet at Iowa City, where our entries placed fifth in the state. SWHMMHN The swimming team had three returning Iettermen . . . Larry Sovereign, Tom Reed, and Dave Bender. In the diving division Wally Arringdale and Tony Williams did the honors. Ted Schulz accumulated the highest number of points this season. Nine 'aquamen' let- tered this year. QERLS BASKETBALL With only four returning lettermen , from last year's squad, Coach 'Chuck' ' Lovin was faced with the iob of re- building the squad. Since the one sen- ior on the squad, Mary Courter, was out a great deal of the season with a leg injury, the coach had to depend on his juniors, sophomores and fresh- men. Even with this handicap of inex- perience the girls piled up a very good record of lO wins and 9 losses. GIRLS' STARTING TEAM The Toreadorettes started off the season with a bang, beating Stanhope, Ogden, Grand Junction, and Slater respectively. Pilot Mound then turned the tide, handing the girls their first defeat. Rebounding back, the girls defeated Ankeny only to be defeated later by Paton. Again the girls came back with a victory over Jewell. The girls were beaten by Eldora and then Perry. The Toreadorettes came out victorious over Bayard in their last game before the county tournament. Boone's hopes of another county crown were smashed by Jordan in the first game. Again, with luck against them, the girls lost, this time to Roland. The girls bounded back and de- feated the undefeated Farnhamville girls 48 to 44. ln their last game before the sectionals, the girls lost to Gilbert. The Toreadorettes roared through the sectional tourney, knocking off Dana and Jordan. Then in the finals it was again Gilbert who beat them. The girls were unable to pull their last game out of the fire as Valley of Des Moines beat them 50 to 47 closing the season. 34 29 20 35 44 46 52 38 52 40 38 48 63 44 54 50 55 53 63 N.
