No more report cards, book reports, or semester tests. no more proms, school parties, or club meetings-no more of high school. When we passed from grade school to this large building. Boone High School, our idols were the seniors. those who knew the building that we didn't know, knew the teachers. and laughed and talked when walking through the halls be- tween classes while we ran for fear of being late. l We grew up. We took the place of those idolized seniors, and now we are being graduated-leaving behind this building that holds memories no amount of money could replace. Now that the time has come, we almost hesitate, almost hate to take that step. We hate not only to think of leaving the building, but of losing contact with our many friends and teachers. Yet we can't help being proud, proud of that certificate that says that we are graduates of Boone High School. Our thanks and gratitude to the teachers who helped us grow up. SMITH. Such grace and charm are the rule They're surely an asset to our school. Who's in this sophomore class so great? A few of their names we shall relate: But because of lack of space and time And our ability to rhyme, Just names of a few sophs you shall see In this short poem. The Sophomore Keyf As I gaze into my Crystal ball And see the faces of them all, There appears the face of one dear lass The prettiest blond in the sophomore class, Marilyn Curell, belle of the ball, Admired for her brain by one and all. And if it it's intellect you want to see. There's Duffy and Martin and Mary Lou P. D, Zagel and Klute do very good work, And still there are others who never shirk. I look again into my glass sphere. My goodness! What is it that I see here? Also they have one darling lad Who is sometimes good and sometimes bad. Young Jerry Smith is our book-eover boy To the sophomore class he is a joy. Each year there is a boy so tall That naturally he plays basketball. Bob Powers a famous coach will be: If you don't believe me, just wait and see. Tom Fangman is a sophomore lad Whom you see very rarely mad, In orchestra or band you'll see Tom play the drums and tympani. Ushering people at the show, Is a sophomore boy we all should know. He will show you to your seat: Bob Jensen is the boy to meet. These are only a few of the sophomore elas With its many a winning lad and lass. His sparkling action in conference play brought him a first-team berth on the All-Conference team. His all-around play gave him a third team rating on the I.D.P.A. team and honorable mention on Jack North's all- state team. CHUCK DENNING-The offensive spark in this year's backfield, Chuck led the team from his quarterback position and ranked third in the conference scoring. He piled up an enviable record by being placed on the first All-Confer- ence team, on Jack North's fourth all-state team, and on I.D.P.A. honorable mention list. Den- ning was considered one of the states outstand- ing backs. JOE KRENZ-Operating from his right guard position, Dynamite turned in a creditable per- formance an all the seasons games. His spirit and aggressivencss proved to be a determining factor in many contests. He received honorable mention on the all-conference team. BOB CLIFTON-Six feet three inches of rugged end could well describe t'Pinky' Whose body- shaking blocks set up many touchdowns. An iron man, he could be depended on in every game for stopping end-a-rounds. His play garn- ered him honorable mention on the all-confer- ence team. BOB CASE-The locals plunging fullback, Bob piled up enough yardage during the year to give him a position on the third all-conference team and a good round of cheers from the B.H.S. sup- porters. Playing an outstanding game against Perry, Bob broke away for several long gains. JIM JOHNSTONE-Although hampered by in- juries, Jim was a Valuable asset in our backfield. During the season he converted seven extra points out of ten attempted, and accounted for a great deal. of the yardage gained on the ground. ELDON DAHL-Even though a latecomer to the squad, Bud proved he was first-team ma- teiial and was a mainstay of the line. A separat- ed shoulder suffered in the Ames game kept him out of the last tilt, but up to that time he was in every game. DICK LITTELL-Dick was one of the hold- overs from last year who proved himself a cap- able player time and again. The Littell b1'other combination was one of the sore-spots in our opponents' offensive with Tackle by Littell ringing out many times over the public address system. IBOB LEIDEN-Strong on defense and on the receiving end of many passes from Denning, Bob was a stand-out at his end position. In the Grin- nell gamq he captured a 45-yard pass and a 30- yard pass which set up touchdowns. In the other games Bob was credited with a good deal of yardage from passes. GENE BROWN-In almost every backfield there is a star, but there also is a player who does the blocking that makes this starring pos- sible. Boone's blocking back was Swede whose coach rated him as one of the best. This talent gave him honorable mention on the all-confer- ence team, Eafikeifiall 886400 XARSITX B-XSKI 'l RAI I SQI -X11 OXI l W 1 ous 11 run serx N ll 1 I4 I X ll X w un x 111 Nu ur Trmes have changed' was the cry ot the Boone basketball fans as they watched the Toreadors romp through ther 29 game schedule wrth 21 v1ctor1es Cllmaxrng the1r regular seasons play the Red and Green clrmbed the starrs to basket ball heaven wrth the1r entrance rnto the state tournament for the irrst trme srnce 19.31 The old Jrnx was frnally broken when the loreadors rn tournament play rolled over Webster Crty Coun c1l Bluffs and Sroux C1ty to reallze a dream ot all basketball players Drawrng Carroll rn the trrst round of the st te tourney the Toreadors survrv ed a last quarter drrve and moved on to the sec ond round where they were elrmrnated by classy Ankeny qurntet The return of two lettermen at the openrng ot the season brought hrgh hopes as Coach Bucky OConnor molded the team whrch would repres nt BH S Although the locals dropped the1r trrst en counter they bounced back rnto the vrctory col umn and added a hrffhlrght to the season by twrce topprng Ames our tradrtronal rrval Play1ng be tore 6500 enthusrastrc fans rn the state college armory both t1mes Boone cl1nched the last game wth a story book endrng rn the form ot a shot from the mrddle ot the floor An rnvrtatron to play at the state coachrng con ventron at Iowa btate College brought the locals up agarnst the 1947 state champrons Daverport The Boone aggregatron lagged rn the trrst hall but staged a b11ll1ant comeback rn the last cantos to brmg them wxthln n1ne po1nts ot v1ctory The tempo qurckened and the Foreadors caught frre racmg through the1r last fourteen games wrth only one defeat Toppmg the1r regular schedule Boone lrterally chased Fort Dodge ott the court runnrng up a 62 32 count Swrngrng 1nto tournament play the Red and Green lrved up to expectatrons and fought then way to among the top srxteen teams rn the state of Iowa Because ot the seasons outstandrng record all members of the 1947 48 varsrty squad were award ed major letters Those stepprng torward proud ly to cla1m therr letters at the basketball banquet on Aprrl 12 were Bob Clxfton Don Seaton Jrm Johnstone Vllgll Byerly Don Meadows LeRoy Rxchards Paul Stark Morris Rogers Bob Case J1m Lrttell Floyd Crary Robert Smclarr and Harold Nrckell Managers letters were presented to Jay Honohan and Kenneth Lrndrnark To Coach Obonnor and the bovs who carrred our colors durrng the season the students ol Boone Hrgh rssuc a certrtrcate ot achrevement tor work well done FR .
