FOOTBALL SEASON The 1943 football season OfflC1ally op ned wlth the Oskaloosa game but thls was only after three weeks of 1I1t9DS1Ve practlce We started the season wlth SIX major letter wmners back from last year and a team compos d ma1nly of semors However we lost one of these when B111 Lamb was out for the rest of the season because of an appendectomy We had had an other game scheduled wlth Denlson but thls game was cancelled and so our flrst game was at Osky We won thls game 21 to 6 all the scores belng made ln the flrst half Andy scored three tlmes-one aftel a 52 yard run vuth Rod Clark makmg two of the converslons and Rle son kxckmg one The next week we played one of the best games of the season agamst Fort Dodge losmg by a score of 31 to 13 Part of the Dodgers score was a result of some fourth quarter gambles that Boone took ln an effort to pull the game out of the bucket Rod Clark cored both touchdowns and Andy the converslon The next week vw beat Perry 29 to 0 Wlth Rod and Andy sharmg SCOllDg honors Then came the Marshalltown game Wl'l1Cll we lost 33 to 6 However th1s was the flrst t1me that the Bob cats had been scored agamst dur1ng tht season xx 1th Andy runnlng one across xn th fourth quarter I the second quarter we got to tht one yard stupe but fa1led to put lt across The three followmg weeks we played and beat Grmnell Jefferson and Newton 30 0 260 and 347 1n that order The scorlng 1n these games was done by Andy Rod Smxtty and Toad ThlS brought us to the flnal game of tht season AMES It was played on Frlday Nov 5 at Boone n stead of on Armlstlce day as had been the custom We lost 60 although we got down to the one foot marker 1n the last few seconds of play All 1n all lt was a successful season Wlth Coach Coles men w1nn1ng flV6 and losmg thre games OUT OF BOUNDS A Player Remznzsfev In addltxon to the actual games much of the fun mg room We were lucky thls year 1n gettlng trans portatlon to and from our out of town games Reg ularly scheduled buss s were used wlth an extra one put on the run which we usually almost completely fxlled The one we took to Oskv was an ancxent con traptlon that had Just about seen ltS day the bus company was taklng no chances In fact on one of the h1l1s Toad was so doubtful of xts ab1l1t1es that he went up m front and pushed wh1le the drlver pushed on the wheel we made It It dld have one good feature a fme horn that was the prxde and Joy of everyone The drxver was a very co op ratlve fellow and when we asked h1m what some lever was for on the dash lf he dldrt know he would try It to fxnd out We took good cal of the bus however and so were g1ven a newer ed1t1on on the Marshalltown trlp When turned loose ln Des Moines we seemed to have mvad d the tcwn One group would meet an other golng up th esculators m Younkexs whxle they were gomg down and a few actually succeeded would come swmglng down the otherwlse des rted store alsles and merge or spllt at the Il'1t9I'S9Ct1OUS But everythlng went all rlght untll Tom Patterson trxed to stlck up an armored car but the drxver d1d nt hav the same thmgs rn m1nd that Tom d1d On both trlps the team stayed overnlght In Marshalltown we stayed ln the towns best and were treated as kmgs But the story was a llttle dlfferent at Osky The rooms werent so bad exe pt that one group found :ts room to be also the f1re escape And the town dldnt seem to appreclate Sonny Schroeders rmgmg of then victory bell On both tx 1ps the food was exo llent and the steaks defxmtely of the k1nd long t1me no see The send off guen on both tr1ps were super and really gave the team a w1ll to w1n There was only one mmor mxshap 1n all of thxs RIGFSOH Reddy Toad and Andy went off to Osky ach thmkmg the other had h1s sultcase Wh1Ch sat back m the depot ln Boone 4 ' ' .9 ' ,13 . .
