Student Council Building Committee Henry Wallace, Les McIntyre Don Benson, Bill Smith Presidents Simlmz' Baclq .feadwi The Student Council is an organ- ization which givcs the members ex- perience in good citizenship by per- mitting them a certain amount of authority in school government. The developing of leadership is of special value in such an organization. Boone High's Council is chosen in a demo- cratic way in that each student is al- lowed to exercise his right of suffrage. The Council is composed of the presi- dents of the various home rooms. Each year new Student council officers are elected, a president. vice-president, and secretary. At nrt-sent these of- ficers are: Les Mclntyre, Willis Big- gerstaff, and Florine Wheeler. Some of the objects of the Student Council are: to represent thc ideas and ideals of the student body: to develoo a greater snirit of democracy: and to nromote the welfare of the institution. Before any administrative idea is brourfht before the Student Council as a hodv, it is the dutv of the Executive Board to bass it. The council itself devised these duties for the Committee. Shown at left are four student lead- ers. Henry Wallace, Jr., is the sopho- more class nresident: Les McIntyre is the president of the Student Council: Don Benson. president of the senior class: and Bill Smith. nresident of the iunior class. Along with his other school activities. Henry, Hank, has shown a definite interest in football. Les. although primarilv interested in soorts-football. basketball. and base- ball-has managed to find some time to write the sports column for the Bumble B, as w'ell as to sing in the Boys' Glee Club and Mixed Chorus. Bill, also interested in athletics, has shown great success in both football and basketball. He has been a mem- ber of the student council and Dresi- dent of his home room. Donald has been the class president and student leader of the present senior class for the last three years. He has been a cheer leader, member of the Student Council, and is active in almost every phase of school life.

14 .Ee The supervisors and faculty have unselfishly given much of their time and service towards the war effort. Besides the regular duties of running a school, they have put many war-time programs into effect. You will find them all doing war work outside of their school hours. The Victory Corps, a national program for high school students interested in helping attain vic- tory, is under the supervision of Mr. Laurance Evans. Assisting the principal of our high school in this program is Mr. Jack Fisher, vice-principal. Both Mr. Evans and Mr. Fisher, with the faculty members Mr. Heggen and Mr. Longnecker, are members of the Iowa State Guard. Mr. Evans was also the chairman of a com- mittee that set up the Elks National Defense School. This instruction, based on naval aero- nautics and navigation, proved to be very advan- tageous to the boys on entering the Naval Air Corps. The boys met semi-weekly for ten weeks under the instruction of H. L. Cunningham. Adults who desired special training for war occupations have the night school open to them. Such subjects as typing, shorthand, and a course in machine shop have been taught by the high school faculty. Spanish also was offered because of our growing interest in South American coun- tries. The faculty by adapting their varied talents have found a definite place in our war program. Many have been busy instructing students in first aid, Red Cross life-saving, and physical fitness. Regular recreational hours leading to better health have been organized. Bad-minton, ping- pong, swimming, boxing, and basketball became very popular with the students through the ef- forts of faculty members. Others have assisted and encouraged the students in scrap drives. Mr. Van Ness is to be commended for the effi- cient way he directed the faculty in handling the issuing of the ration books. Over eleven thousand copies of Ration Book Number Two were issued in the record time of three days. Mr. Van Ness, superintendent of Boone Public Schools, arranged the program of adult education for the benefit of the community. Our school has been cooperating with Iowa State College and the Office of War Information in showing a series of twelve motion pictures. These government productions deal with the war and Pan-American relations. The armed forces have enrolled many of our teachers. To date there are six members of the Boone High School faculty serving Uncle Sam. Frank OlConner and George Adams are serving in the Air Corps. Claire Watson and William Hartley belong to the Signal Corps. Mr. Hart- ley, the last w'e heard, is in North Africa. Wayne Hill is in the Navy, and Dale Moore is serving in the Quartermaster Corps.
