LUZ Effmf During the years of 1942 and 1943 the na- tion has gone all-out for Victory. Our school, likewise, has devoted most of its time for a more complete and decisive victory over the enemy. The war effort program of B. H. S. corresponds almost exactly with the war ef- forts of high schools all over the country. In recognition of this, the school kept a scrap- book of the activities of the various home rooms and classes. The work of the classes included patriotic essays, Red Cross work, bond and stamp sales, and scrap collections of all kinds: needles, pins, iron, silks, tinfoil, but- tons, rubber, radios, rags, paper and many other things. The bond and stamp booth that the second year Latin class sponsored has done a very good piece of work in stimulating the sale of stamps and bonds. They have sold over eight thousand dollars worth since last fall. The most important part of our war effort is, however. the High School Victory Corps. It is a national organization suggested by the United States government for all the High School War Effort programs in the country. There are four different divisions-Air Service, Land Service, Production Service and Com- munity Service. Each division is headed by a Chief and Assistants w'ho are faculty mem- bers. and a Leader and Assistants who are student members. Maurice Hagaleen and Ger- ald Pepper, Chief and Assistant Chief, respec- tively, of the entire corps, were elected at large. The following are the faculty chiefs and student leaders of each division: I. AIR SERVICE-Mr. H. L. Cunningham, chief. Miss Naomi Hicks, assistant chief. Gareth Wilkins, leader. Jack Schroeder, assistant leader. II. LAND SERVICE-Mr. F. E. McIntyre, chief. Miss Elizabeth Fry, assistant chief. Elaine Herrick, leader. Margaret Hall, assistant leader. III. PRODUCTION SERVICE-Mr. Don Cole, chief. A. Industrial Section-Mr. O. E. Steepes, assistant chief. B. Agriculture Section-Mr. Wilbur Drake, assistant chief. Maurice Hagaleen, leader. Bill Smith, assistant leader. IV. COMMUNITY SERVICE-Mr. Lowell Lock- ridge, chief. A. Stenographic Section-Miss Edna Howe, assistant chief. B. Scientific Section--Mr. Karl Longneck- er, assistant chief. C. Homemaking Section-Miss M il d r e d Carmody, assistant chief. D. Retailing Section-Miss Lola Weber, as- sistant chief. E. Bookkeeping Section-Miss Lola Weber, assistant chief. Dorothy Lundberg, leader. Bill Lamb, assistant leader. For each service there are special require- rnents in school subjects and a general re- quirement of five hours per week of physical training and two hours weekly of Military Drill or Community Service. The Military Drill takes place at the Armory on Tuesday evening, but for Community Service there are many jobs from which to choose. Prob- ably the most popular is the Nurses' Aid. Around twenty-five girls signed up for it. They report they find their w'ork very inter- esting, but this isn't unusual because most of them plan to become nurses themselves. Many members fill in reouired time at the Red Cross work rooms. Here they roll bandages, cut out clothing. and sew. Others attend classes in first aid, life-saving, and civilian de- fense. Those who wished to be blood donors were sorry to hear that the Boone County Hospital didn't have facilities for storing and classifying blood plasma. Thev were relieved, however. when they learned that arrange- ments had been made for representatives from the University of Iowa to come here June 1 for their donations. The ration board has also provided many hours of work for many students. The enlistment dates w'ere January 11-15, and there are now approximately one hundred and fifty in the corps. To each member an emblem of his branch of service was given. The Boone High Victory Corps is a great suc- cess and has done a great deal in furthering the war effort in this community. W I fs .CIS
