Although war restrictions have curtailed many of our activities, the major sports of football, basket- ball and baseball, and minor sports of swimming, golf and tennis continue to be in the limelight. The teams traveled in private cars instead of the familiar and comfortable buses. The fans cou1dn't journey with the various teams as in pre-w'ar days: never- theless our boys kept Boone High's name high in the realm of sports. Shown at the right are Boone High's coaches, Gale Fisher and Don Cole. Mr. Fisher coached the 1943 basketball Toreadors. Mr. Cole was the coach for the baseball and swimming teams. He also finished the football season after Mr. Hill's departure for the U. S. Navy Merchant Marine Corps. Leading the school at the pep assemblies and holding our school spirit at a high level have been the achievements of our cheerleaders. In their col- orful costumes are Marilyn Anderson, Nelle Char- lotte Millward, Bob Miekle, Rose Sovereign and Joan Clizbe. Marilyn and Nelle are graduating let- ter winners. Of all the sports this year, swimming has taken the highest individual honors. Shown here are Fried- ley, Anderson and Welin. Bob Anderson is a na- tional inter-collegiate champion with records of 17.9 in the 40-yard free style and 54.2 in the 100-yard free style. The climax of last year's season was the announcement of Andy's placement on the All- American team. Toad Welin's breast stroke rated him third in the state. His time w'as 1.07.8. Both of these boys are returning lettcrmen. Winner of the state championship is the distinc- tion earned by the 1943 Boone tennis team. The doubles crown was won by Dick Lantz and Dick Farley. Other members of the team were Oliver Briggs, Glenn Jones and Jim Ford. Don Spong, John Brunton and Don Maffet have served as managers for our teams. Don Spong re- ceived the senior award, a jacket, for being manager since his sophomore year. Charles Updegraff, state medalist, captained the golf team of 1942, which placed second in the con- ference and third in the district. Fort Dodge beat them twice and they tied with Ames. Other mem- bers of the team were Roger Carlson, Bill Munsell, Norman Iden, Fred Taylor, Don Maffett, and Bill Modeland. As this book goes to press there are approximate- ly eighty boys reporting daily for our formerly dor- mant sport, track. Boone High will be represented in the Valley High relays, Drake relays, and dual meets with Ames and Marshalltown. The baseball team has a 1.000 average for the season to date . . . Boone, , .
