May its citizenry know that We, the senior class of Boone High School, will unite our strength and zeal with that of our present fighting forces to help bring an end to Axis-dom and world Wide confiict. l1LWe are the first to be graduated from Boone High School since the Victory Corps was established. The changes in curriculum necessitated by participation in the Victory Corps should prepare each of its members to make specific contributions toward Winning the War. We are proud to have a part in it. 1iLAnticipating a victory for the United Nations, we, the 1943 staff, in deep appreciation dedicate this Scroll of Service to all those who have gone from Boone High School to defend our inalienable rights . lm , 7 S f ,f x Svrrnll nf Lgnnnr WORLD WAR II Kll d Warren Grosmckle Wrlhs Watkms John Br1dges Shemll Brown Thomas W Benson Iohn I Attey Ir Marshall L Ph1ll1ps Curt1s Heaton Arthur A Anderson Wrlham Wmfreld Raymond Ralph Boyvey Robert Paul Younggren 1 ul' if fr i e for Missing. Besides the regular duties of running a school, they have put many war-time programs into effect. You will find them all doing war work outside of their school hours. The Victory Corps, a national program for high school students interested in helping attain vic- tory, is under the supervision of Mr. Laurance Evans. Assisting the principal of our high school in this program is Mr. Jack Fisher, vice-principal. Both Mr. Evans and Mr. Fisher, with the faculty members Mr. Heggen and Mr. Longnecker, are members of the Iowa State Guard. Mr. Evans was also the chairman of a com- mittee that set up the Elks National Defense School. This instruction, based on naval aero- nautics and navigation, proved to be very advan- tageous to the boys on entering the Naval Air Corps. The boys met semi-weekly for ten weeks under the instruction of H. L. Cunningham. Adults who desired special training for war occupations have the night school open to them. Such subjects as typing, shorthand, and a course in machine shop have been taught by the high school faculty. Spanish also was offered because of our growing interest in South American coun- tries. The faculty by adapting their varied talents have found a definite place in our war program. Many have been busy instructing students in first aid, Red Cross life-saving, and physical fitness. Regular recreational hours leading to better health have been organized. Bad-minton, ping- pong, swimming, boxing, and basketball became very popular with the students through the ef- forts of faculty members. Others have assisted and encouraged the students in scrap drives. Mr. Van Ness is to be commended for the effi- cient way he directed the faculty in handling the issuing of the ration books. Over eleven thousand copies of Ration Book Number Two were issued in the record time of three days. Mr. Van Ness, superintendent of Boone Public Schools, arranged the program of adult education for the benefit of the community. Our school has been cooperating with Iowa State College and the Office of War Information in showing a series of twelve motion pictures. These government productions deal with the war and Pan-American relations. The armed forces have enrolled many of our teachers. To date there are six members of the Boone High School faculty serving Uncle Sam. Frank OlConner and George Adams are serving in the Air Corps. Claire Watson and William Hartley belong to the Signal Corps. Mr. Hart- ley, the last w'e heard, is in North Africa. Wayne Hill is in the Navy, and Dale Moore is serving in the Quartermaster Corps. Mr. Evans Miss Battey Miss Harvey Mr. Fisher Miss Benson Mr. VanNess Student Council Building Committee Henry Wallace, Les McIntyre Don Benson, Bill Smith Presidents Simlmz' Baclq .feadwi The Student Council is an organ- ization which givcs the members ex- perience in good citizenship by per- mitting them a certain amount of authority in school government. The developing of leadership is of special value in such an organization. Boone High's Council is chosen in a demo- cratic way in that each student is al- lowed to exercise his right of suffrage. The Council is composed of the presi- dents of the various home rooms. Each year new Student council officers are elected, a president. vice-president, and secretary. At nrt-sent these of- ficers are: Les Mclntyre, Willis Big- gerstaff, and Florine Wheeler. Some of the objects of the Student Council are: to represent thc ideas and ideals of the student body: to develoo a greater snirit of democracy: and to nromote the welfare of the institution. Before any administrative idea is brourfht before the Student Council as a hodv, it is the dutv of the Executive Board to bass it. This board is made UD of the three officers of the Student Council plus five more members: Bet- fv D ovan, Jack Schroeder, Jacques 'n, Jean Berry and Marcia Stand- Thc l ' g ommittee, divis'on h' - dcnt sever l s h se are: f . a e all Eames. in ic e han ' Q master keys. and or tin the various ticket selling camnaiens. The council itself devised these duties for the Committee. Shown at left are four student lead- ers. Henry Wallace, Jr., is the sopho- more class nresident: Les McIntyre is the president of the Student Council: Don Benson. president of the senior class: and Bill Smith. nresident of the iunior class. Along with his other school activities. Henry, Hank, has shown a definite interest in football. Les. although primarilv interested in soorts-football. basketball. and base- ball-has managed to find some time to write the sports column for the Bumble B, as w'ell as to sing in the Boys' Glee Club and Mixed Chorus. Bill, also interested in athletics, has shown great success in both football and basketball. He has been a mem- ber of the student council and Dresi- dent of his home room. Donald has been the class president and student leader of the present senior class for the last three years. He has been a cheer leader, member of the Student Council, and is active in almost every phase of school life. QS? M -s S -2, 5 SAI' KB , 'Qi N QQ fri? Perhaps many of us will be found working in defense industries: a few' will attend' college, and the greater part of the class will be called into active service for our country. We wonder if we will be will- ing and capable to serve where we are most needed. As we look 'back over our years together, we realize that our class has shown leadership in both school and community affairs. We have been a determined group, and whatever we have set out to do has always been successfully complet- ed. We are proud of our record, both scholastic and athletic. During our freshman year we w'ere put out that we were still considered a part of the junior high, and we thought ourselves very grown up when we were oc- casionally allow'ed to attend a senior high pep meeting. In our sophomore year the upperclassmen seemed to boss us around a bit, but after all we were only Sophies. Our junior year was the outstanding year of our high school days. This was the year so many of us struggled through physics, and also the period in our lives w'hen we sold candy at the games in order to finance that very successful Junior- Senior Reception. . During our senior year the war has been uppermost. in our minds and activities. All through our school days we have been tested, and soon we will face the great- est test of all. Under the direction of Miss Ring- land. the Guild produced on March 26, the comedy 'tLady Be Good. During the past year, the speech club has been working on one-act plays and monologues. Several club members co- operated with various groups to present one-act plays to different community or- ganizations, The club also found inter- pretative reading very interesting, Miss Lamb was the capable director of these speech activities. The debate team, head- ed by Owen Fitzsimmons and coached by Miss Lamb, is one of the more active minor activities of Boone High. Members of the team, which met every Monday and Tuesday during the first semester, were Robert Mickle and Wilma Barnes, affirmative speakers, and Marie Clarke and Owen Fitzsimmons, negative speak- ers. The proposition which the club worked on was-Resolved: That a Fed- eral World Government Should Be Estab- lished. Early in the second semester the debate team sponsored the appear- ance in a senior high assembly of the Iowa University Debatcrs. The B-Y-Ettes and the Hi-Y Clubs are, perhaps, two of the most active clubs in Boone High School. Headed by Nell Charlotte Millward, the thirty members of B-Y-Ettcs have been doing war work consisting primarily of rolling bandages and doing odd jobs for the Red Cross. This year the Hi-Y Club was reorganized and got off to a good start the first sem- ester. The officers of the club w'ere: President, Carl Jolliffg vice-president, Russell Cooper, secretary, James Van- Nessg treasurer, Donald Spong, and chap- lain, Stanton Markwalder. The second semester officers were: president, Stan- ton Markwalderg vice-president, Don Ben- song secretary, James Van Ness, treasur- er, Bill Lambg and chaplain, Bill Lamb. During the year the club had a hayride, sponsored a dance, and had a Halloween party. The first of the second semester the club brought Dr. Glenn Cunningham, the world's greatest miler, for a very in- teresting assembly program. The helpful sponsors of the Hi-Y are: Coach Gale Fisher. James I. Davis, Y.M.C.A. secre- tary, and Drexel Peterson. Under the direction of Miss Carmody, the Home Ee Club has been studying wardrobes and materials as well as work- ing on their own individual craft pro- jects. Mary Krenz acted as club presi- dent with Marilyn Wiley as secretary. Knit tw'o. purl two, would be the first words to greet you if you ShOu1d enter Room 7 on Mondays, sixth period. This is where the knitting club members click their needles, gab'l a little, and also manage to find time to knit. For the past year the girls have been knitting blocks for an afghan for the Red Cross. Three ol' the sixteen girls spent their 001,64 it ,QGAJ4 7 X 76 time making sweaters for themselves, The officers t'or the past year have been: President, Mary Jane Peters, and secre- tary, Betty Morrissey. Miss Handy is the sponsor. Every Friday, period six, thirty girls and twelve boys have met in the shop for Arts and Crafts Club. Under the supervision of Mr. Lein, the club mem- bers have made many leather, wood, and plastic articles. The Art Club. under the capable direc- tion of Miss Nygren, has spent consid- erable time studying textile design and making chalk and charcoal drawings. A project which we have all noticed in the third floor hall is the patriotic mural showing various phases of the armed forces. Many patriotic posters have also been made by the club lor the commun- ity. The object ot' the Radio Club was to learn the facts about radio. Under the super fision of Mr. McIntyre. the club m ,ers have spent many interesting l 's ,hglding and repairing radios. iess and Checker Club. sponsored by Mr. Steeples, met every week for a series play. Each week the club mem- bers challenged a different person, and at the end ot' the year those persons having the most victories were declared the champions. Last year winners were: chess, Donald Maffet: checkers, Carl As- pengreeng and Chinese checkers, LaVerne Babbitt. The meetings ot' the Commercial Club have been varied and interesting. At one club meeting a beauty operator spoke, at another Mrs. Hoist showed pictures of Mexico, and at several group meetings business training students told of then' office experiences, During the tall the club enjoyed a pot luck supper at school. This club was sponsored by Miss Weber. Mr. Cunningham and Mr. McIntyre are the sponsors ot' two active Camera Clubs. Their object has been to give some of our high school camera tlends further knowledge in the field ol' photography. The members have learned how to use the developing tank, how to make contact prints and enlarge pictures. The three things required ot' members of Camera Club have been: 1, to have the use of a canicrag 2, to take at least one roll of tilm per semester, to develop it and make a print from each negative: 3, to pay thirty-tive cents per semester tor ma- terials. This past year, the boys' swim club was put on a war-time program basis. 'ine boys learned how to carry rifles while swimming and also how to swim through oil fire. More emphasis was put on underwater and breaststroke swun- ming. In the girls' swim club the time was spent studying diving and life-sav- ing. Both the girls' and boys' gym clubs have concentrattd on the game of basket- ball as w'ell as the exercises in the physi- cal fitness program. ! arab in M?- fi M r ,- if ,mg L, xxx ,V RWMN- 'A z v , A 33.5, as V3 ,pf Q :Q Qvwxg X V x ' Awww N 5 If Aa , .w GX js ' .Q-1 xx S S :gl f G 5 iff if Q v 9 ' up 45 YS V 'E Si., AN 11.52.22 SSESNW Zz IQ :Q Qu Q M ' 1 ,. si' xt .,'xaf.,:' , x 1- gi xx 51 as sew +1 1 v N N :VA Q.: .... : 5, A 6 - 2 ' 3 , , -f K X f y . 9 3 f ifgwm IWIIPJQI Q, 'Y an Mi IL Ai X , T L I I Ei 41 M We ik' Q I . .A N 5 1 3 Q r 5 5 Nix Vi L L 5 lg ' -A is if JN X M Q W W N fx x -new g 3 'fEe'e:fe ::.aA.. -. -SSX N xi wil mm W .,.. Swimmers to your marks! They're off! The Boone High swimmers had but one meet this year. The results were North High of Des Moines 44, and Boone 21, Bob Anderson and James Welin are the co-captains. Although war restrictions have curtailed many of our activities, the major sports of football, basket- ball and baseball, and minor sports of swimming, golf and tennis continue to be in the limelight. The teams traveled in private cars instead of the familiar and comfortable buses. The fans cou1dn't journey with the various teams as in pre-w'ar days: never- theless our boys kept Boone High's name high in the realm of sports. Shown at the right are Boone High's coaches, Gale Fisher and Don Cole. Mr. Fisher coached the 1943 basketball Toreadors. Mr. Cole was the coach for the baseball and swimming teams. He also finished the football season after Mr. Hill's departure for the U. S. Navy Merchant Marine Corps. Leading the school at the pep assemblies and holding our school spirit at a high level have been the achievements of our cheerleaders. In their col- orful costumes are Marilyn Anderson, Nelle Char- lotte Millward, Bob Miekle, Rose Sovereign and Joan Clizbe. Marilyn and Nelle are graduating let- ter winners. Of all the sports this year, swimming has taken the highest individual honors. Shown here are Fried- ley, Anderson and Welin. Bob Anderson is a na- tional inter-collegiate champion with records of 17.9 in the 40-yard free style and 54.2 in the 100-yard free style. The climax of last year's season was the announcement of Andy's placement on the All- American team. Toad Welin's breast stroke rated him third in the state. His time w'as 1.07.8. Both of these boys are returning lettcrmen. Winner of the state championship is the distinc- tion earned by the 1943 Boone tennis team. The doubles crown was won by Dick Lantz and Dick Farley. Other members of the team were Oliver Briggs, Glenn Jones and Jim Ford. Don Spong, John Brunton and Don Maffet have served as managers for our teams. Don Spong re- ceived the senior award, a jacket, for being manager since his sophomore year. Charles Updegraff, state medalist, captained the golf team of 1942, which placed second in the con- ference and third in the district. Fort Dodge beat them twice and they tied with Ames. Other mem- bers of the team were Roger Carlson, Bill Munsell, Norman Iden, Fred Taylor, Don Maffett, and Bill Modeland. As this book goes to press there are approximate- ly eighty boys reporting daily for our formerly dor- mant sport, track. Boone High will be represented in the Valley High relays, Drake relays, and dual meets with Ames and Marshalltown. The baseball team has a 1.000 average for the season to date . . . Boone, , . 'l'he t'ornial initiation was conducted by the following National Honor Society members now attending Boone Junior College: Doris Wit-rnshei'ger, Norma Pestotnik, Audrienne King, Donald Statton, Allan Redeker. Charles llpdegratf, Dorothy Kurtzwell and Patricia U't'onnell. New inenihers inducted into the society were: Dorothy Budd. Betty Lou Rice, lVlargaret Jeanne Strand, Dorothy Tea- garden, VVanda Wallace. and Florine Wheeler. The National Honor Society has been a eon- stant inducement to the students of Boone High School to maintain high standards. One of the requirements of this society is that the studcnt be in the upper one-third of his class scholastically. In addition, the students are graded by their teachers on the four qualities for which the pin stands: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Records of activ- ities kept in the office eoniplete the data that determines the membership. funded 9 Boone Junior College was founded a fully accredited college by the Iowa lnter-Collegi- ate Committee and the State Department of Edu- cation. It offers studies that comply with the College Victory Plan. In addition, ex- tra curricular activities such as Mixed Chorus, Y-Coeds, Dramat- ic Club. and Basketball are offered. Mr. Thorngren, dean of the Boone Junior College, is a very popular and democratic person. He is an ideal sup- ervisor, and it is through his encour- agement and guidance that the classes and activities succeed as they do. In this, its sixteenth year, we find the college deeply engrossed in the happenings of the world about it. Its contributions to the w'ar effort are many and varied, but chief among them is manpower. Many boys have already stepped outside its doors into the arms of Uncle Sam. Those serving their country on the many bat- tle fronts are: Richard Anderson. Kenneth Anderson. Glenn Atkinson, Edward Berry, Darwin Brooks, Davi Deering, Chester Echternach, Jay Flockhart. Gerald Fritz, Burl Harmon, Louis Knose. Dick Lantz, Winston Mark- walder, Robert Morris. Clyde Neely, Charles Peters, Rob- ert Raynor, and Dale Walker. Since our theme is the Scroll of Service, it is only fitting to mention two groups who have contributed time and service. Patricia O'Connell, Jane Kennedy, Mary Holmes and Marietta Carlstrand have served as student assistants in the library. Many of the college boys have been traffic officers, perhaps preventing serious accidents at dismissal time. The basketball team known as the Bears, was coached by Mr. Heggen. In junior college competition the team won two games and lost two. Their schedule was shortened as the draft took members of their opponent's teams. The Mixed Chorus under the direction of Mr. Hakes combined with the high school chorus for assemblies and special civic programs. This year the Dramatic Club presented a three-act play, 'Sadie of the under the direction of Miss Lamb. Participating in the play were Doris Wiernsberger, Betty Cline, Winston Markwalder, Audrienne King, Martha Lowry. Harold Welin, Bill Baird, Bob Raynor, Norma Pestotnik and Margaret Fitzgerald. Barbara Walker was the assistant director. 'Junior College officers were as follows: Hargld Welinv president? Jay Flockhmwt, vice-president, and Barbara Walker, secretary of the freshman Class: Dale Walker presideiitg Betty Halverson, vice-president, and Alice Murphy, Sgcretary of the Sophl, more c ass. .. 4 x M- Q I 2 Q 1 Q Q 2 .M Q X 1 ww W 4 Q , 1 7 , Q K X ,,, V? f Q ,www 'Qu Q, NMS SNK awQ W Ny NQ6 mm ww law 8 LUZ Effmf During the years of 1942 and 1943 the na- tion has gone all-out for Victory. Our school, likewise, has devoted most of its time for a more complete and decisive victory over the enemy. The war effort program of B. H. S. corresponds almost exactly with the war ef- forts of high schools all over the country. In recognition of this, the school kept a scrap- book of the activities of the various home rooms and classes. The work of the classes included patriotic essays, Red Cross work, bond and stamp sales, and scrap collections of all kinds: needles, pins, iron, silks, tinfoil, but- tons, rubber, radios, rags, paper and many other things. The bond and stamp booth that the second year Latin class sponsored has done a very good piece of work in stimulating the sale of stamps and bonds. They have sold over eight thousand dollars worth since last fall. The most important part of our war effort is, however. the High School Victory Corps. It is a national organization suggested by the United States government for all the High School War Effort programs in the country. There are four different divisions-Air Service, Land Service, Production Service and Com- munity Service. Each division is headed by a Chief and Assistants w'ho are faculty mem- bers. and a Leader and Assistants who are student members. Maurice Hagaleen and Ger- ald Pepper, Chief and Assistant Chief, respec- tively, of the entire corps, were elected at large. The following are the faculty chiefs and student leaders of each division: I. AIR SERVICE-Mr. H. L. Cunningham, chief. Miss Naomi Hicks, assistant chief. Gareth Wilkins, leader. Jack Schroeder, assistant leader. II. LAND SERVICE-Mr. F. E. McIntyre, chief. Miss Elizabeth Fry, assistant chief. Elaine Herrick, leader. Margaret Hall, assistant leader. III. PRODUCTION SERVICE-Mr. Don Cole, chief. A. Industrial Section-Mr. O. E. Steepes, assistant chief. B. Agriculture Section-Mr. Wilbur Drake, assistant chief. Maurice Hagaleen, leader. Bill Smith, assistant leader. IV. COMMUNITY SERVICE-Mr. Lowell Lock- ridge, chief. A. Stenographic Section-Miss Edna Howe, assistant chief. B. Scientific Section--Mr. Karl Longneck- er, assistant chief. C. Homemaking Section-Miss M il d r e d Carmody, assistant chief. D. Retailing Section-Miss Lola Weber, as- sistant chief. E. Bookkeeping Section-Miss Lola Weber, assistant chief. Dorothy Lundberg, leader. Bill Lamb, assistant leader. For each service there are special require- rnents in school subjects and a general re- quirement of five hours per week of physical training and two hours weekly of Military Drill or Community Service. The Military Drill takes place at the Armory on Tuesday evening, but for Community Service there are many jobs from which to choose. Prob- ably the most popular is the Nurses' Aid. Around twenty-five girls signed up for it. They report they find their w'ork very inter- esting, but this isn't unusual because most of them plan to become nurses themselves. Many members fill in reouired time at the Red Cross work rooms. Here they roll bandages, cut out clothing. and sew. Others attend classes in first aid, life-saving, and civilian de- fense. Those who wished to be blood donors were sorry to hear that the Boone County Hospital didn't have facilities for storing and classifying blood plasma. Thev were relieved, however. when they learned that arrange- ments had been made for representatives from the University of Iowa to come here June 1 for their donations. The ration board has also provided many hours of work for many students. The enlistment dates w'ere January 11-15, and there are now approximately one hundred and fifty in the corps. To each member an emblem of his branch of service was given. The Boone High Victory Corps is a great suc- cess and has done a great deal in furthering the war effort in this community.
