The talk was that sopho- mores might graduate from a new school. Now, two years have passed and with it the dream of two new high schools has come true. Then some of it had to be cut into sprigs and carried in wheelbarrows to different parts of the ground where eager planters were all ready to get started. We all had certain jobs to do as we planted our school desert in grass just before the Christmas holidays. Each class had a different part of the grounds to do, so it really didn't take long to plant the three acres. Everyone seemed to enjoy getting on his hands and knees and planting the bitter bluegrass. The idea of the planting originated with our prin- ' cipal, Mr. Earl Kipp, and the Student Council officers. Our new Alma Mater means much to the students here at W. R. Boone High School. For the Seniors, it is a farewell song to classmates and fond memories. For the juniors and Sophomores, it holds a pledge of loyalty that is foremost in the heart of each and every student. Proudly we wear our rings hearing the oficial seal of Boone High School. This emblem came from the combined eforts of Maxine Butler and Iimmy Armstrong. Pictured 'on the seal are the torch, representing knowledge, the winged foot, representing athletics, and the Indian which signifies our own Boone Braves. For our motto, we have adopted Semper I cum virtute - always with courage. Students catch their first glimpse of the William R. This year the doors are opening to forty new classrooms and teachers. Most of our classes are held in the North and South buildings, but a lovely music room overlooking Lake Lancaster and a soundproaf band room over the gym are two of the separate classroom buildings. . An agricultural class, with its own orange grave and white cottage, is one of the new additions. A brand new homemaking department with all the latest homemaking devices is the other addition. You might have seen the Ag. class, as it is better known, helping the P.T.A. beautify the grounds. And you've probably smelled the delicious odors that have came from the homemaking classes. The harder subjects, as Latin, geometry, and chemistry, seem easier than in other years in smaller classrooms with familiar teachers, for the majority of our faculty were with us at OHS. Our smaller school, having approximately l,0l 5 students offers practically the same curriculum as was offered at OHS. I On the following pages you will find the first Seniors, Juniors, and Sophomores ever to attend BHS. Within are some who have been especially honored. Helping them to achieve these honors are our ever popular teachers. Follow with us through the doors of their classrooms and watch them at work . . . But why tell you more-turn the pages and see for yourself. ' Students stop to chat along the walk outside the administration building. Their enthusiasm and concern in the Senior Classg their sym- pathetic understanding and untiring efforts are ever foremost in our memories. Miss Bruce, our true friend and wise counselor, has advised us in our mciny troubles, and with her unfailing sense of humor has helped make our three years the happiest ever. And Our Miss Mac, keeping her bright smile when things were rough and laughing with us in times of fun, has instilled her faith in each one, making us feel a real part of the Senior Class. It really has been a privilege to be the first Seniors of Boone High School and without the help of our lovable sponsors it wouldn't have been OUR SENIOR YEAR. Jolene Boatwright- --Glee Club '5l. HW: Y: M32 OUR BEAUTIFUL AUDITORIUM, SEPARATED FROM THE MAIN BUILDING, IS A GATHERING PLACE FOR MANY OF OUR SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Qt., . 7' jhe oloora of fLe auchforium are .S ung open fo inc!uJe our acfiuified Activities is a word that holds a lots of meaning here at BHS. It covers our Student Government, high moral and scholastic clubs, Band and Glee Clubs, Pep Clubs, Publi- cations, and many other phases of school life. This year the doors of the auditorium are flung open to include many of these activities. You might even say it is the hub of our activities. ' ' ln belonging to clubs we meet new friends and learn the true meaning of cooperation in working together on club projects. At one time or another we've all had to stay late at school to work, rush home to eat, and then go to an evening club meeting. Sometimes it's hard to find time to get everything done, but we always manage it somehow. We found that we have gained a lot in taking part in these activities this year. Our teachers are very considerate in helping us to form clubs and sponsoring them. They urge each student to belong to at least one club, for they feel that this part of student life opens the way for leadership and gives each of us a chance. to show our abilities as leaders. You don't have to be the president of on organi- zation to be a leader-just being an active member proves your leadership. 'Q This year all of the clubs have worked together so well. There was so much to be done in our brand new school, and the faculty and students worked hand in hand to get everything accomplished. Here at Boone High School, the auditorium not only serves as an ideal meeting place for clubs, but it is a theater for our plays, a music hall for our band and glee club concerts, and a gathering place . for our pep rallies. . The Christmas Parade, Armistice Day Parade, and Tangerine Bowl Parade were but three of many, wherein Orlandoans and visitors alike saw the familiar colors and listened to the snappy music of the Boone band. The organization was not only happy to bring its music to the City Beautiful, but had occasion to play in Minneola, Tampa, St, Peters- burg, and Lakeland as well. lt is hoped at this time of writing that they will engage in the festivities at the State Contest in West Palm Beach. Running here and there, snapping pic- tures, always on the spot, and preserving the memories of our school were the busy workers of the l953 BOONE LEGEND. The staff will never forget those Iong hours after school, the countless cokes we drank, and wondering if we'd ever meet those deadlinesl Losing layouts, copy, pencils, and rulers, and rushing to meet ci picture assignment, the members of the staff cooperated and pitched in to see that everyone had plenty of help. Spurring us on with her cheerful nature, ANNELL, our efficient Editor-in-Chief, worked hard to make the whole book a treasure chest of memories. CAROL and SYLVIA checked and double-checked the senior names and wrote up all the senior events so that our first BHS seniors would never forget this year. Drawing the many sports layouts and vividly reporting the athletic events, DICK, RALPH, and CHARLES heralded our Boone Brave teams. As Girls' Varsity Club president, VIRGINIA was at the very heart of the girls' sports section. Creating layouts and captions for the lovable faculty of BHS, EVELYN, DONNA, NAN, and FELICITY worked with a ready will. MILLIE went around with that secret smile on her face while she worked on Who's Who, and our witty juniors, MARGARET and DORIS kept us laughing as they sketched iunior and sophomore panels. The two PAT's LU 00l'l6 egel'l6! wondered how they'd ever fit all our clubs into Activities and spent hours getting identifications in the blazing sun. Skill- fully drawing layouts and designing our cover SHIRLEY contributed much to our whale BOONE LEGEND, Giving us that extra push when we needed it and en- deavoring to teach us yearbook making, was MRS. GENEVA CRAMER, our ad- viser, who gave so unselfishly of her time to make our book a success. With the Bays' Varsity Club and the Editorial Staff lending a helping hand, our capable Busi- ness Staff, under the direction of MISS SARA FERGUSON, sold ads and raised funds to help us pay for our book. DOLLY, BETTY, RHETTA, SHIRLEY and JOANN labored over the many records that need to be kept. There were no haphazard methods used but correct bookkeeping practices. CHARLES, TOMMY, and ROB- ERT worked in the bookstore to add money to the fund. Spontaneous support from the student body in assisting us to name our BOONE LEGEND and their en- thusiasm in buying the book gave us courage when things looked rough. The wear and tear and even the fears are for- gotten now as we look back on this grand year of work on the BOONE LEGEND. We have had the privilege of giving you the very first BOONE LEGEND. lt's been a year of fun and worry, but it's been a wonderful experience that has opened many doors of opportunity to us and we'll never forget it. A THLETIBS ' jAe :loom of rzfhkfica ofkr opporlunify fo everyone . At last it's football season . . . Yes, and football season holds a lot of different meanings for everyone. To the boys on the team it may mean a chance to develop their bodies, to learn the meaning of team-work, to accept a challenge to put their team on top, or even to make a big impression on that cute little girl who sits across the aisle in English. To the cheerleaders it's a chance to show everyone the yells and cheers they've been practicing all summer, and to get that school spirit going at the pep rallies and ban- fires. For the band members and maiorettes football season holds plenty of excitement . . . there's the breathless silence when they play The Star Spangled Banner, the vibrant singing when they break into the school fight song, the wild cheering when the first strains of Dixie are heard, and, of course, those original half-time shows. To the teachers a football game means a chance to get better acquainted with their students, and to show their' loyalty to the school. And last, a football game has many meanings for the students, but most of all it's a chance to really cheer on that team of the school they love best. Although football is the mast popular sport, our basket- ball ranks exceptionally high as a maior sport this year Here the doors of the gym are opened wide to admit the many sports loving spectators in to the basketball game. BOONE FINISHES BEST SEASON IN SCHOOL HISTORY Students, faculty, parents and fans alike were glad to see Coach Bill Gilmartin together with George Foti, Harry Meisel, and Fred Hogan receive appointments to Boone after they had done such a fine job at OHS last season. At the beginning of the '52 prep grid season the Boone High Braves were expected to have an inexperi- enced team which would not win o game. Although the Braves, under the capable, friendly leadership of Coach Gil, didn't compile an impressive record, they soon proved to everyone that they had a team capable of standing up to any one in the state. The fast Brave offense outgained all but two of its opponents on the ground while the tough Brave defense, though much smaller than its opponents, held the oppos- ing offense to a very limited ground gain. Highlighting the season was Football FroIics, when a terrific Brave defense held the Jefferson Dragons to a total ground gain of 2 yards, and while the defense was holding, the offense went on to score three T.D.'s. Starting the season with G.M.A., the small fighting Braves showed a tremendous amount of courage and fortitude as they lost 35 to 6, playing in the first game of BHS history, the much heavier G.M.A. Bulldogs. The Brave offense racked up lO first downs to G.M.A.'s 8, and outgained them on the ground. The lone Brave T.D. came in the final quarter when Brim scored. Going into the Daytona Mainland game as the undere- dog, the Braves surprised everyone by beating the Bucs 7 to 6. The Boone defensive team held the monstrous Buc offensive to a small gain. The spectacular offensive running of J. Brim, who ran up a l2O yards, and the long passes from Rooks to Davis highlighted the game. Boone spent the entire first quarter inside the Buc 30 yard stripe, but they didn't score until the fourth quarter when Rooks fought his way over the goal tying the score 6 to 6. Bud Peeples split the uprights with a perfect boot to give the Braves the decisive 7 to 6 lead. Tying the Ft. Lauderdale Flying L's with a 6 to 6 deadlock was a moral victory for the fighting Braves. The lone Brave tally came in the first few minutes of the game. The T.D. drive was started with a pass from Rooks to Flowers and was climaxed when Brim sprinted across the goal. Twice the Braves held the much heavier Ft. Lauderdale team on Boone's own l yard line. Special recognition goes to the whole defensive team. tAl 0lfig POM? We have played Volleyball, Basket- ball, Soccer, Badminton, and Softball in our regular class work. After practicing these various sports in our Girls practice basketball during class period. Will it or Won't it? daily classes, we made up our teams and chose names -crazy, appropriate, and otherwise. Miss Judy Walker is our new girls' Physical Edu- cation teacher. Although she is only a half-pint size, she keeps us girls on our toes. We feel that our Physical Education program is necessary and beneficial in our high school. The Pepsters offered stiff competition to the Senior Stars before placing as runners-up in volleyball.
