Science 'Department SHIRLEY MARTIN Science Award Winner More than two hundred and fifty students at B. C. are enrolled in one or more science courses. All subjects of the department are elective with the ex- ception of Health. Health is required of all students and is regularly offered in the sophomore year. General Science, Biology. Chemistry, and Physics com- plete the list of subjects offered in the Department. Every effort is made to make each subject a functional part of the student's training and individual needs and interests are considered as far as seems prac- tical to do so. Mr. Edwin H. Walton is head of this department and teaches both chemis- try and physics. Mr. Bob Gillette and Mrs. Mary Belle Porter divide their teach ing duties between general science and biology. Mrs. Porter also assists Mr. James R. Huey in the teaching of health.

Commerce Department Perhaps the most far-reaching step in the commerce department this year has been the formation of a chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America. Students have had the opportunity of putting their commercial studies into ac- tual use in real business situations. The objective of the business department is to train students to be useful citizens. The department endeavors to develop competent and aggressive busi- ness leadership and to create more understanding and interest in choosing busi- ness occupations. Students are encouraged to improve their homes and com- munity and to establish and improve standards for entrance upon store and office occupations. Mrs. Betty Duncan heads the commerce department and, with John Dorman and Don Stahl, this year taught 293 students. They presented the following sub- jects-. typing I and II, office practice and business English, business math, gen- eral business, salesmanship, and commercial law.

Public Speaking Onions in the Stew” was the Senior class play this year which was given by the Public Speaking and Dramatics Department with other members of the Sen- ior class. The play was directed by Mrs. Carolyn Day who is the head of the department. The students studied the correct way to speak before the public, different kinds of Drama, and the art of applying and using make-up. One of the projects this year was making model stages to illustrate the settings of well known plays. This was the first year the department was completely organized and much progress was made in the fields of Public Speaking and Drama. a n d D r a m a t i c s
