We, the seniors of Boone County High School, Florence, Kentucky, present the 1957 edition of the Boone Hi-Ways IN MEMORIAM TO EUGENE CAVE Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle flew; And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod The high, untrespassed sanctity of space. Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. John Magee yearbook to our friend and sponsor, Edwin H. Walton, in appreciation of the understanding and patience he has shown us throughout our High School days at Boone County. Although it is a very young school, Boone County already has an outstanding sports program. One of the assets of Boone County is its clubs. There is usually an activity or proj- ect being sponsored by one of them. The students look forward each year to the Y- Teen Mother and Daughter banquet, F.H.A. and F.F.A. Banquets and skating parties sponsored by various clubs and classes, only to mention a few. There is a serious side to our clubs also, for who can tell of the fine service rendered to the school by the annual Teen-Talks sponsored by the Hi-Y and Y-Teens and the many other construc- tive projects of our clubs. Some of the lasting impressions left on students from Boone County are the products of our supe- rior Glee Clubs, Choir, and Band, for we shall never forget the thrilling experience of listening to or being a part of such old Glee Club favorites as Green Cathedral and O, Divine Redeemer and hearing the Band greet us on many occasions with our stirring school song. The school year, climaxed by the Junior and Senior prom and graduation activities, leaves each student with many wonderful memories along with a sense of accomplishment and pride in their work and Boone County. English is to instill in the pupils’ minds a love of good literature and to make a thorough study of English grammar so that each person may be able to write, speak, spell, and read in an acceptable manner. Mrs. Hazel Fowler headed the department and Mrs. Betty Dilts, Miss Connie Foreman, and Mrs. Carolyn Day taught the many English classes. Mrs. Day added public speaking and drama to the department. Home Economics T) c P a r t m c James L. Patton, Head of the Bureau of Vocational Education, says, Vo- cational home economics is an integral part of the educational program of the tl secondary schools of Kentucky that is doing its part toward developing the total individual. It is recognized, I am sure, by everyone that the home is a basic institu- tion in American life that is developing qualities in people at an early age that reflect in their conduct, attitude, and their general contributions to society. The over-all purpose of vocational home economics is to train individuals so they will have competencies that will enable them to establish homes and develop basic qualities so that the atmosphere will be conducive to wholesome family living, There are 156 students enrolled in the Home Economics Department, with Mrs. Helen Blanton as the department head. Mrs. Fannie Jarrell teaches home economics I and II, and Mrs. Blanton teaches home economics I, II, and III Commerce Department Perhaps the most far-reaching step in the commerce department this year has been the formation of a chapter of the Future Business Leaders of America. Students have had the opportunity of putting their commercial studies into ac- tual use in real business situations. The objective of the business department is to train students to be useful citizens. The department endeavors to develop competent and aggressive busi- ness leadership and to create more understanding and interest in choosing busi- ness occupations. Students are encouraged to improve their homes and com- munity and to establish and improve standards for entrance upon store and office occupations. Mrs. Betty Duncan heads the commerce department and, with John Dorman and Don Stahl, this year taught 293 students. They presented the following sub- jects-. typing I and II, office practice and business English, business math, gen- eral business, salesmanship, and commercial law. Science 'Department SHIRLEY MARTIN Science Award Winner More than two hundred and fifty students at B. C. are enrolled in one or more science courses. All subjects of the department are elective with the ex- ception of Health. Health is required of all students and is regularly offered in the sophomore year. General Science, Biology. Chemistry, and Physics com- plete the list of subjects offered in the Department. Every effort is made to make each subject a functional part of the student's training and individual needs and interests are considered as far as seems prac- tical to do so. Mr. Edwin H. Walton is head of this department and teaches both chemis- try and physics. Mr. Bob Gillette and Mrs. Mary Belle Porter divide their teach ing duties between general science and biology. Mrs. Porter also assists Mr. James R. Huey in the teaching of health. Public Speaking Onions in the Stew” was the Senior class play this year which was given by the Public Speaking and Dramatics Department with other members of the Sen- ior class. The play was directed by Mrs. Carolyn Day who is the head of the department. The students studied the correct way to speak before the public, different kinds of Drama, and the art of applying and using make-up. One of the projects this year was making model stages to illustrate the settings of well known plays. This was the first year the department was completely organized and much progress was made in the fields of Public Speaking and Drama. a n d D r a m a t i c s Vocational Agriculture The Vocational Agriculture department trains present and prospective farm- ers for proficiency in farming and develops the effective ability to: (1) produce crops efficiently, (2) produce livestock products economically, (3) to manage the farm wisely, and (4) to practice aggressive rural leadership. The depart- ment is headed by Mr. Watson Craft and there are 57 students enrolled in the six different subjects taught in the department. Music Department The Music Department of BCHS this year consists of the Band under the direction of Mr. Carroll Shaver, and the Mixed Chorus, Girls' Glee Club and the A Cappella Choir under the direction of Mr, Edwin Walton. The Band and Glee Clubs have given several concerts and also have given musical pro- grams throughout the year. The Band, Mixed Glee Club and the Choir were rated superior at the Kentucky High School Music Festival this year at the University of Kentucky. All of these things along with the education of music makes this one of the most outstanding departments of the high school and it is one of which the students are proud to be members. Social Science Department The Social Science Department this year offered World history, civics, international problems, American government, world geography. American history was not offered this year because of a change from sophomore to junior requirement. Teaching these subjects were Don Stahl, department head, Miss Joan Anderson, Mrs. Priscilla Cook, and Mrs. Kathryn McKay. The object of this department is to give high school students a broader knowledge of events about them, both present and past, and a greater under- standing of the peoples of the World, thus preparing them to meet world con- ditions with intelligent appraisal. Jttdust rial Arts Mr. Pat Wallace is the department head and the only Industrial Arts teacher at Boone County this year. The projects that the department had were woodwork, sheet metal work, and ornamental iron work. In the woodwork classes the students made furniture. In the ornamental iron works class they learned how to weld and ways to work with iron. The main purpose of this class is to prepare young men of today for industry of tomorrow. Z) c P a r t m c H t Math Department There are seven subjects taught in the Mathe- matics Department. They are general mathematics, plane geometry, algebra I, Algebra II, solid geom- etry, and trigonometry. Mathematics is taught to develop accuracy and thoroughness in the students' reasoning and planning in preparation for the future, and to learn the basic language and skills of mathematics in preparation for other fields of study. There are 292 students enrolled in this depart- ment, and Mrs. Emily Furnish and Duncan Huey teach the ten classes.
