Students marched on the Rotunda to protest the proposed building site of the new Booker T. and the proposed name change . When demands were not met, the sec- ond march occurred two weeks later on April 28 . The marchers numbered around 4,000 . On April 29 the school was closed after an unsuccessful attempt by Superintendent Lamberth to get students back in school by explaining the administration's position. School was re-opened on May 1. The year was com- pleted on june 12. During the summer court rulings were established on busing and integration, and Booker T. welcomed its first mass of white students on September 4 . Washington High Football team opened the 1970 season as if they were on their way to a promising year by sending both Crestwood and Norfolk Catholic down in defeat on shutouts and suffering one defeat in the first three games . But the Bookers then experienced a slump from which they were never to recover. However, BTW did put forth their best efforts against the best teams in the state. In games against arch-rivals Maury and Norcom fat that time ranked one and four respectivelyl the Bookers scored more points than any team scored on either team during the entire season. Despite such fine performances the Bookers were unable to defeat other teams and finished the 1970 season with a win -loss record of 2--8. p it-as ,F WW fl' ' 'W 42-4 QT : ... :Qi BTW 14 BTW 0 BTW 8 BTW 0 BTW 20 BTW 0 BTW 6 BTW 10 BTW 20 BTW 0 0 Crestwood 1 3 Kennedy 0 Norfolk Catholic 26 Granby 36 N orc om 6 C ox 9 Maggie Walker 13 55 Lake Taylor Maury 14 Norview 1' Q5 M, QTY' DEFENSE BACK ROW: Michael Brookins, Oscar Brown, Richard Tatum, Calvin Spratley, Melvin Wiggins, Philip White. I vu are firmmit in sq, tilt-,gitttgtty temlwr and they were the lirst white students to show up at the predominantly black high school for the fall semester. A group of black students moved toward the pair. Both boys were a little nervous, but they kept on walking The students in thefrontd the group reached out their 5612072 :lu magazine for young modems Saturday hloveinber 14,-l-570 Page 2 5 - ' --1 .. ,. ., Y ,.. ..-.. V ,.-....-,-,-. .... right hands, smiled and said, Welcome to Booker T. 'Iberia hasn't been a tense mo- ment since then for VanEm, burg, Richardson or the other four white athletes who are the first d their race to wear the maroon and white football uni- form of Wadtington High. There have been name call- hg incidents, crude signs and student walkouts at some of N0rlolk'l hip: schools. but not at Booker T. The increaseof Booker T.': white student pop ulation from seven last year to about Ill this fall hasn't creat- ed the tension which soaks the schools from which the new Bookers came. Allan and I were the only white students out for football for die first three days of prac- tice, laid VanF.mburg, a na- tive of Willingboro, N.J., who moved to Norfolk two years ago. If there was any worry at first, it didn't last long Ev- eryone has been beautiful. We expected no beignored until time guys got to know uc. but it wasn't that way at all Almost everyone made it a point to let us know we were wclcorne. Things are tight now. I'm super good friends with all of the players. Richardson says the students at Booker T. have a serious in- terest in sports, and there!! good reason. An athletic schol- arship is the only dance some of them have to attend college. Pm .lad we're here, lid Richardson. When a chatol started in September a lotof my old friends at Lake Tayloa' would kid me about my new school. They'd yell 'Hey Book- er T.' every time they saw me. l didn't like it at first, but, you know, it wasn't long before it didn't matber. l'm happier here than they are at their school. l'm just a third team linebacker and a member ofthe sperinlty teams, but l've never lx-en tempted to leave Bwkbl' T. Both would rather talk about football. Getting along at Booker T. isn't a problem, and questions about the situation there just draw smiles. lt took me a. While logtt started, said Vanlimburg. I started as a reserve guard, but l uas too slow. Then I was moved to tackle, but the coach- es decided I was too light tl85J. Finally I shifted to cen- ter aud made the first warn. 'I would have started SDI- er, but it takes me a month be- fore I stan htting anyone lltlrtl Wht-ther the new Booban are starters like Vanfimburg or reserves like Richardson, David Armitage, or Stanley Rygli, they have the sung thing going for thern-identity. For duty's sober prosecution I'm tightening my nerveg I'm strengthening my resolution, My destiny to serve. I'm charging up my intellect. I'm tuning up my heart. With hands unfettered, I expect To play a hero's part. Let others arrogantly seek Their station in the sung I'll coin my consolation meek F rom duty nobly done. From truth's uncompromising line I promise not to swerve. While others may aspire to shine, My purpose is to serve. To no injustice will I yield To elevate my fame Altho on honor's shining shield I never write my name . No sordid insincerity My fortune shall enhance . Nor do I ask for charityg I only want a chance. --J. Riley Dungee, Sr. 157 M xi 1 P Q M .Q .3 ,Il- 15, uf-Sf. an -4... 4.. 4.1.5 'ff ,sei 2 F x.
