QKYW! ,1,m,,hWr1r 'Y ' W 'mf I , v V The Annual Stajjf The Pioneer 1964 Published By BOOKER T WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL Reialsville, N. C. F ORE WORD In a flash back of years starting from this one and ending at 1960, we, the graduating class of 1964, 9 'b'b' students of progress and initiative. can say with pride that we have been and still are While, we have paused briefly here from our con- stant travel up the spiral road of life, our hearts grow heavy with sorrow for the inevitable departure from our beloved Alma Mater. Throughout the course of our lives, we shall never tions of life given us by our principal and teachers. May their names be made a shrine for the incom- parable services rendered unto us. Our Alma Mater, which may be compared to a station of preparation on the spiral road of life, has served well and beyond its purpose, but there are other points of destination to which we must aspire, while there are years yet ahead, and while our expressway of opportunity is still accessi- ble. Onward up this road we go! For some of us the city of success or prosperity awaits our arrival, while for others, the city of discontent. If all of us use well the acquired knowledge of our high school years in college or other higher institutions of learning, the possibilities of a beneficial, and rewarding life are great, but let us not forget the sacrifices of our parents, their instructions, and the prayers of many for being able to see the end of the beginning -- our graduation from high school. In special recognition to those whose supervision has made possible this publication, we salute Mrs. G. B. McRae and Miss E. P. Harris. Within this publication of Pioneer 1964, our most sacred moments of the past years are recorded We hope with all sincerity that this will be an enjoyable reference of those years. l Victor Russell Editor -In 'Chief 2 forget the instructions, guidances, and stable founda- EDICATION 0 In parting, we cannot close the door to this phase of our edu- cation without first pausing to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to two of those who have been to us an ever present help in our hours of troubles and a continuous light in our hours of darkness. In our thirst for education these have been to us an oasis in the desert, therefore, we humbly dedi- cate this edition of The Pioneer to Mrs. G. B. McRae, and Miss E. P. Harris, our senior advisors. With deep sincerity, O yr fel, W. Maxcine Harbor Business Manager 3 70: ' lrrrrrffrflebl In memory of Fountain Demetrius Thomas C1945- 1963j, who was a fellow classmate and friend. There is a remembrance ofthe dead, to which we turn even from the charms of the living. EXECUTIVES: WITNESSES: Gwendolyn Gilmore Gladys Stacey Glenda Bingham Victor Russell Patricia Pass 33 CLASS HISTORY It is the year 1975. lf one should pick up the daily newspaper he would see this headline Astonishing Contribu- tion Made to Medical Science by Victor Russell, M.D. But this is only the headline for today. In the headlines of previous weeks and months there has been other news relating to the discoveries and accomplishments of other esteemed individuals. Just last week the renowned mathematician, Maxcine Harbor, masterminded the con- struction of a gigantic new space ship equipped to remain in outer space the entire life span of a normal human being. No lesser were the contributions to the world given by Glenda Bingham, Kindell Griggs, Cheryl Lawson, Alberta Lowe, Reginald Cunningham, Melvin Robinson, Adell Stokes, Benjamin Stewart, and yet, still others. The new Editor-in -Chief of the immortal NEW YORK TIMES, Michael Allen, upon interviewing these distin- guished citizens, made the startling discovery that they all attended Booker T. Washington High School in Reids- ville, North Carolina. When asked of his discovery he commented thusly: It seems that these esteemed pillars of society were all members of the same class. I shall attempt to relate it to you as told to me. We entered Booker T. Washington High School in the year 1960 as highly excited and inexperienced freshmen. Under the leadership and guidance of our homeroom teachers, Mr. Whitsett, Mr, Quick, Mr. Powell, and Mr, Crawford we became adjusted to high school life. We joined various clubs and several students made the honor roll throughout the year, Several students who participated in the Freshman Talent Hunt were: Patricia Pass, Billy Purcell, Lenora Watlington, Gwendolyn Gilmore, and Wesley Boyd, Five members of our class were on the football team namely: Victor Russell, William Obey, Melvin Robinson, Thomas Morton, and John Reynolds, Five of our classmates also played on the basketball team: Kindell Griggs, William Obey, George Mullins, Thomas Morton and Wiley Lee. The school at this time was also under construction, adding several rooms and a lobby. In 1961 we began our sophomore year with Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Partee, and Miss Harris as our homeroom advisors. Many of us maintained our high scholastic averages and others improved. This year we were made proud due to the fact that two of our homerooms took first place and second place in the Athletic Rally. Glenda Bingham was crowned Miss Washington High and her escort was Samuel Harrison. Some of our classmates were still displaying their wonderful talents shown to us in the Freshman Talent Hunt. Wesley Boyd won second place on the Omega 34 Psi Phi Talent Hunt in Martinsville, Virginia. He also participated in the dramatic play Brides to Burn. In 1962 we began school as proud juniors. Our homeroom advisors were Mrs. Coleman, Mr. Partee, and Miss Harris. We had several objectives in mind, but the main one was the Junior-Senior Prom and The National Honor Society. As it turned out the Prom was a big success, however, we didn't invite the underclassmen. We had as our theme, An Evening ln Outerspace. As for the National Honor Society twelve of us were eligible, Maxcine Harbor, Cheryl Lawson, Alberta Lowe, Glenda Bingham, Gwendolyn Gilmore, Adell Stokes, Michael Allen, Melvin Robinson, Victor Russell, Kindell Griggs, Reginald Cunningham, and Benjamin Stewart, We initiated thirteen new members for the year 64-65. This year Wesley Boyd won first place in the Omega Psi Phi Talent Hunt in Martinsville, Virginia, and had a chance to participate in the finals at Virginia Union, Richmond, Virginia. The Dramatic Club presented The Trial of Nancy Gage and juniors participating were Alberta Lowe, Maxcine Harbor, Wesley Boyd, Elaine Courts, Glenda Bingham, and Lenora Watlington, This year Kindell Griggs, George Mullins, and William Obey won Basketball Awards. The juniors winning Football Letters were: William Obey, John Reynolds, Melvin Robinson, and Charles Watkins. One of our homerooms won first place in the Ath- letic Rally and Lenora Watlington was crowned Miss Washington High with Wesley Boyd as her escort. In the fall of 1963 we felt as if we had made a great achievement because we would soon be graduating, each going his individual way out on the roads of life. We were made very happy once again because we won first and second places in the Athletic Rally. Glenda Bingham was crowned Miss Washington High and Victor Russell was her escort. This was Glenda's second time being Miss Washington High. Hurrah! Every girl isn 't that lucky. Well we made it and we can attribute our success to all our advisors and counselors, especially those of our senior year: Miss Harris, Mrs. McRae and Mrs. Rogers. We truly wish that there was some way we could repay them for their services.
