We have now suc- M M cessfully c o m p l et e d t h e required courses prescribed for us by our teach- ers, who possessed love, deep concern and outstanding characteristics, a nd whose personalities and superlative teaching abilities have been an unyield- ing encouragement to us. We shall be ever indebted to our parents, who helped to make this moment of our lives possible. We are now living in a world of ever changing events, and we must go forth to prepare ourselves for these many changes. Since 1959, explorations and new theories in the field of science has opened the doors to many exciting and interesting occupations which will offer challenges for future goals. We realize that in the years ahead of us there will be different responsibilities that we will con- front in whatever walk of life we choose. It is our desire and hope that we shall be able to cope with any problems which may be ours. In presenting this our 1960-61 edition of the Pioneer, may we leave with you some of the most cherished moments of our past, with the hope that you will hold them as dear to you as they have been to us. Gloria Anne Harbor Editor-in-Chief 2 DEDICATIO To those who, through sacrifice, patience, generosity and sympathy, have provided unselfishly for the successful termination of our high school careers, and to those who vicariously will enjoy our future endeavors, satisfactions, and achievements, we, the members of the class of 1961, dedicate this annual to--Our Parents. 3 DMINISTR TI C. Most of us have now reached some of our goals in life. We are the hostesses--Misses Williette Hamlett and Audrylene Bingham. At present Williette is a physical therapist at Duke Hospital and I am a bio- chemist at one of America's largest research hospitals --Johns Hopkins. Tonight our class history will ,be given by some of our distinguished classmates. First, Miss Sandra Davis, who is a teacher at Howard University, 13 SENIOR will give us the history of our freshman class. In 1957, we entered Booker T. Washington High School, inexperienced, reluctant, but eager to begin. We met in the gymtorium where we were introduced to our freshman advisors: Mr. Powell, Mr. Bragg, Rev. McCoy and Mr. Whitsett. We joined various clubs. Many of our boys who made the football team, won letters and obtained special recognition. Also many of us made the honor roll and this pleased our teachers and parents. Now Miss Gloria Anne Harbor, who is an aero- nautical engineer at Cape Canaveral, Florida, and who MARY HAIRSTON WILLIETTE HAMLETT GLORIA A HARBOR MURIAN HAIRSTON BOBBY HAMPTON MARIE HARRISON EDDIE JOHNSON MINERVA JOHNSON JOHN HARRIS JOSEPH JOHNSON JR HQ! fl' I4 SENIOR I wilt fl' 19 41 Q-fo' ROSETTA JOHNSON HELEN JONES ESTER KEESEE WESLEY JOHNSON JIMMY JONES EVELYN KEEZEE JAMES KING ROLAND LAMBERT MARIE KELLUM WILBERT KING WILLIE M. Our sophomore year proved to be more exciting than our freshman year. Most of us participated in the same clubs and still maintained our high scholas- tic averages. One of our homerooms won second place inthe Athletic Drive and this was very thrilling for us. Before we go on to the history of our junior year, I would like to introduce to you some of the other dis- tinguished graduates seated around our banquet table: 15 SENIORS Miss Gloria Bass, who is now serving as private sec- retary to the President of the United Statesg Miss Esther Keesee, who is nowa registered nurse at Walter Reed Army hospital and has just been promoted as Head Surgical Nurseg Dr. Eddie Neal, now serving as the head of the Mathematics Department at the University of Southern Californiag Mr. Lloyd Hairston, the head of the Electronics Department of the General Electric Corporationg Lawyer John Harris who recently opened his own law firm and Dr. Leanna Blackwell, who is head of the Science Department at the University of Michigan. In 1959, we re-entered school as proud juniors with mainly two aims in mind: The Junior-Senior Prom and high hopes that we would be eligible to join the National Honor Society. Fortunately, 11 of us were eligible for the society: Audrylene Bingham, Sandra Davis, Leanna Blackwell, Ollie Thomas, WillietteHam1ett, Esther Keesee, Joe Graves, Eddie Neal, Constance Dillard, Gloria Harbor and Bessie Cobb. And finally, Mr. Jimmy Jones who was our senior I7 SENIORS .4-. CATHERINE WILLIAMS JEAN WRIGHT ALEX WINCHESTER REUBEN YOURES MAE ETTA CUMMINGS DOROTHY B. LOGAN BESSIE L. MARTIN JAMES MULLINS class president and who is now running for the President of the U.S., will give our senior class history. When we entered school in 1960, we felt that we had made a great achieve- ment, we were seniors and about to graduate. We tried very hard to maintain high scholastic averages. We had eleven of our students to graduate with honors: Leanna Blackwell, Audrylene Bingham, Ollie Mae Thomas, Gloria Anne Harbor, Eddie Neal, Jimmy Jones, Sandra Davis, Williette Hamlett, Murian Hairston, Lloyd Hairston andJohn Albert Settle. We feel we owe the success of our senior year to our patient, understanding and encouraging advisors: Mr. Young, Mrs. Spruill, Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Oliphant. Truly, as the years have gone by, we can see our lives in retrospect--many disappointments and failures, many successes--all make up life. It is inthis respect that we have measured our progress year by year--from 1957 to this year, 1971, the year of our second reunion.
