H. S. were never more alive than on September 9, 1955 when the members of '59 enrolled beginning four of the most eventful years in the history of the school. This record breaking class numbering 184 was organized under the leadership of Miss Campbell, Mrs. McRae, Mr. Bragg, and Mr. Major, our advisors, and all four contributed to charting our course. Eager to integrate ourselves into the W. H. S. family, we set out to becomea part of the many extra curriculars of the school. John Neal, and Augustine Watlington excelled in Athletics. James Robertson and Walter Harrison made the first cast for the Dramatic Club's production. Beverly Scales became quite popular as the student pianist for the school. Charlie Hamlet, Walter McKinney, Marie Palmer, and Montrose Spencer began training their voices in the Mixed Chorus. As cheer leaders, Montrose Johnson, Gwen- dolyn Burns, Montrose Spencer and Doris Marie Palmer helped to cheer the teams to victory during the seasons. As the Girl Scout motto says Be prepared the Senior Scouts in the Class of '59 proved themselves prepared when Bettye Gilliam, Marie Tate, and Carolyn Hart went to the National Girl Scout Roundup in the state of Michigan while other Girl Scouts of Troops 13 and 14 were experiencing integrated camping in Bethesda, Maryland. The honor roll showed that the Class of '59 was not only active extra-curricular activities butin their curricular activities as well. Sadye Curry led the student body with a 97 average. Others ranking high were Dewayne Maynard, M.ildred Henderson, Beverly Scales, Montrose Spencer, James Robertson, Montrose Johnson, Susie Lane, Augustine Watling- ton, Wynona Siddle, Doris Palmer, William Henry Bass, Josie Oliver and Walter McKinney. Sadye Curry received a John Phillip Sousa Band Award. Miss Campbell's class won third place in the Athletic Rally. We felt that certainly this was something to crow about. Our sophomore year found us under the guidance of Mrs. Haith, Mr. Quick and Mr. Crawford, with Sadye Curry, Shirley Williams, and Augustine Watlington as our Presidents. Well adjusted, most of us had returned to continue our high school career. Much was to be done if we were to reach this day with honors on our scroll. Weren't we proud when James Jones, James Harris, John Neal, Thomas Moore, Morris Hamlin, William Fulp, Clinton Totten, George Brown, Walter McKinney, William Bass, and Lawrence Scales made the football team, Augus- tine Watlington, Marie Tate, Maxcine Allen, Lola and Mattie Maynard, Loretta Bethel, William Fulp, James Jones, Morris Hamlin, and Napoleon Lawson, the basketball team, whereas, Willard Bell, William Fulp, George Brown, Earnest Lawson, and Charles Bell made the baseball team. Band members marched, played, and spurred our teams while entertaining the public, Melodious voices helped to form the choir. Robert Tapscott received his license to preach and was voted the best Sousaphone player in the state. Nineteen hundred fifty-seven found us juniors. Yes, dignified juniors. Mrs. Duncan, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Oliphant encouraged us to Hitch our wagons to a star. This year we elected as our class presidents, Montrose Johnson, also president of the joint Junior classes, Mattie Maynard and Sadye Curry. As per usual our class excelled with honor students. There were twenty-one members initiated into the National Honor Society. They were Susie Lane, Sadye Curry, Vernie Bolden, Doris Marie Palmer, Augustine Watlington, Montrose Spencer, Mattie Maynard, Wynona Siddle, Montrose Johnson, Gwendolyn Burns, Morris Hamlin, James E. Robertson, Rosetta Rankin, William Bass, Dewayne Maynard, Lola Maynard, Shirley Williams, Beverly Scales, Josie Oliver, Julia Maroney, Mary Robertson, and Marie Ann Tate. Mrs. Duncan's class won first place in the Athletic Rally. For the prettiest floats in the Homecoming Parade, Mrs. Johnson's class won first prize, and Mrs. Olipant's class third. John Simpson and Julia Maroney, coming from the winning class, were crowned King and Queen of Wash- ington High. Montrose Johnson won second prize in the district typing contestg Marie Palmer, first prize in the District Spelling contest, Augustine Watlington first in the Field Day contests. In the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity District Talent Hunt, Beverly Scales won first prize and Vernie Bol- den second. Morris Hamlin was awarded the trophy for the most improved football player. We had nineteen girls to be presented to society by Mrs. Duncan as Debs of the 1958 Debutante Ball. They were Maxcine Allen, Marion Anderson, HISTORY Bettye Gilliam, Betty Benton, Vernie Bolden, Ruth Bradley, Gwendolyn Burns, Sadye Curry, Carolyn Hart, Montrose Johnson, Susie Lane, Julia Nlaroney, Barbara Mills, Rosetta Rankin, Beverly Scales, Wynona Siddle, Avis Vaugh, and Mariamia Watson. Beverly Scales was crowned Queen of the Debutante Ball. We tripped to the light fantastic toe at the Junior- Senior Prom. Music, played by the Rhythm Vets flowed through the Gymtorium, which was so beautifully and artis- tically decorated by Rev. J. E. McCoy. Even in decorating the gymtorium, the members of the Senior class were active. They worked diligently. Our senior year, the sputnik year, the year for which we have been waiting is here. One hundred and thirteen in number we are closing the book on four years of eventful school life. Our officers: Walter McKinney, president, Morris Hamlin, vice-president, Vernie Bolden, secretary, Barbara Mills, assistant secretary and James Robertson, treasurer. Our advisors are Mrs. E. B. Oliphant, Mrs. H. Knight and Mrs. M. L. Johnson three interested, encouraging and inspiring leaders. This year Mrs. Johnson's class won the Athletic Rally. Thomas Moore and Sadye Curry were crowned King and Queen. The class of '59 is still excelling in curricular and extra-curricular activities. The outstandingachievements of our senior year will be class rings, invitations, the presentation of the Senior play, caps and gowns, the class project, publication of the annual, commencement exercises, and most of all, that long awaited diploma. It is sad to think that we must part with these experi- ences, like none we shall have elsewhere, but the fact that we may take their memory with us through the rest of our lives somewhat compensates for their loss. Rich in Christian influences and the gay fellowshipzof our high school days, we go forward with heads held high and smiles that hide our tears. We have hitched our wagons to a star. Historian, Sadye Curry CLASS PROPHECY For I dipped into the future, far as human eye can see, Saw a vision of the world, and all the wonder that would be. The class of 1959 hereby predicts that the common means of transportation will be by Helicopter, and that Ray- mond Hooper, a Jet Pilot specialist, will leave his home drive strip by Helicopter in the summer of 1969 to visit some of his former classmates. His first stop will be in Blue Field, West Va. To his delight he sees his good friends George Rankins, James Albert Jones, and Charles Blackwell, who have become mechanics at the Blue Field Airport. After this, one surprise after another follows. Raymond learns that a group of his classmates has erected a hospital for crippled children, in Charleston, West Va. Upon his visit there he is greeted by Marion Anderson, who is head Nurse, Gwendolyn Burns, Rosa Adams, Augusta Lamberth, Wynona Siddle, Montrose Spencer, and Odelia Williamson, who are registered nurses on the staff. The Doctor in charge is Sadye Curry, assisting her are James Robertson and Morris Hamlin, the Hospital Dietitian, Mildred Cummings. Josie Oliver is Business Administrator, Ruth Bradley, Secretary. Mattie Maynard, and Mae Catherine Harper appear to be taking care of the business department very well. 'Raymond is so amazed at this development that he doesn'twant to leave. Nev erthele s s, a few days later Raymond arrivesin Washington, D.C. making a tour of the city which offers him many exciting experiences. Passing through the Post Office to drop in a few cards to his friends back home, he sees Ernest Lawson, Charles Gwynn, Mary Johnson and Mildred Henderson now employed at the main Post Office as Postal Clerks. Ernest Lawson tells Raymond that George Brown is a member of the F. B. I. in the District of Columbus. Leaving the Post Office he is proud to see Nathan Brown driving a M. Sz B. Transit Line truck. CLASS PROPHECY With time limited for his trip, the next few hours find Raymond on his way to New York City. Due to the congested situation there, it is impossible for him to land his helicopter any place other than the Airport. On the field he notices a United Airliner getting ready to depart. A group of sad looking faces are waiting too. There are Charlie Hamlet, Walter Harrison, John Mullins, Thurman Graves, Thomas Moore, Melvin Stokes, and Jolm Neal leaving for the U.S. Navy. In his conversation with them he learns that Clinton Totten had served with the U.S. Marines for two years and Gracie Bethel's dreams have come true because she is now serving in the Waves. He is very excited about the achieve- ments of his classmates. From the Airport he travels by Subway to down town New York. Raymond decides that he will spend the next few hours sight seeing. He wanders into a Fashion Shop to purchase a gift for a friend back home, and is greeted by Nettie Turner, the Fashion Designer, and her partners, Marie Ann Tate, a Clerk, and Norris Lamberth, Commercial Artist for the shop. Talking with Nettie, he learns that several of our former classmates have made their homes in the city. Nettie tells him that Shirley Williams is operating one of the largest Beauty Salons in New York. Her business consist of a staff of eight, seven beauticians namely: Ruby Neal, Katie Horne, Maxine Allen, Betty Jean B- nton, Loretta Bethel, and Carolyn Hart. Barbara Williamson acts as hostess and Secretary for the Salon. Norris speaks about the wonderful work that Robert Rankins, James H. Jones, Howard Henderson, and Charles Bell are doing as Radio and Television Technicians. He also mentions that James Harris is an Engineer and Reubin Dill, and Thomas Williams are Electrical Engineers and William Bass, an Aeronautical Engineer. Nettie tells him that 40 several of his classmates are teachersg Mary Robertson, is teaching is one of the Elementary schools in Brooklyn. Mae Catherine Williams is head of the Home Economics department at the Amsterdam Junior High School, in Man- hattan. Augustine Watlington holds a teaching position, and Vernie Bolden and Dewayne Maynard are Mathematicians in the same school. Nancy Neal, Mary Moore, Susie Lane, Barbara Mills, Jo Ann Jumper, and Roberta Galloway are all employed by the city school system in Philadelphia. He is suprised to hear that Avis Vaughn and Beverly Scales have continued their study of Music and have made several per- sonal appearances in the city. Montrose Johnson is working for the city Recreational Department. William Fulp is the head coach of all the little league teams in the city. Cecil Foster and Otis Foster are building an addition to the Empire State Building, and Richard Miller and Mansfield Maroney are assisting with the electrical and plumbing work. The purpose of this addition is to provide Walter McKinney with an office so that he may continue his career as a Lawyer. This information is very exciting because we had mentally visited about all of our classmates. Just as Raymond is about to leave the shop, Nettie tells him that Walter Wilker- son and Bobby Winchester are working at the Old Gold Ciga- rette factory in Greensboro, N.C., and Flossie Mims is the cosmetologist at Ellis Stones in Greensboro, N.C. Nettie al- most forgets the wonderful work Lola Maynard is doing as an architect at A Sz T College in Greensboro, N.C. The short trip taken by Raymond proves to be an en- joyable and enlightening one. He returns home with a know- ledgeqthat most of his c la s s m a t e s have perfected their dreags.
