Being absent included catching up on all the soap operas, seeing the housewives and temporarily unemployed bachelors competing for title of Head Idiot on game shows, the morning movie, and staying in bed while mom waited on us with hot chicken soup and jello. But returning to school the next day and filling out a make-up sheet, which was the equivalent of signing our lives away to six teachers, made us feel that we couldn't miss another day of school come hell or high water. Of course, when the administration realized that this method was not effective or familiar to us at all, they quickly returned to our old odd-hour card- trick, showing their ability to bend with the bad situation. Speaking of bad situations, we had one with a little town called Putnam City, which caused us to loosen our claim on State Championship. 4

.J 4 I Life at a school with few or no assemblies is like a box of crackerjacks without a prize Peering through the windows of the auditorium doors, we saw nothing but scaffolding and bits and pieces of plaster scattered amidst a sea of old seats, standing row after row at attention, waiting to be led away to be replaced by new ones Remembering past assemblies, of trying to see over the 'fro in front of you, or trying to hear with the person behind talking to his neighbor, we hoped our auditorium would be, finished by next school year so we wouldn't have to walk through the chilly autumn weather to the boys gym just to hear lVlr. Mayes tell us to stop writing on the bathroom walls. But we were lucky: by spring, the auditorium was opened and we had our stage. if 1 -if
