We know you opened it from what you thought was the front and were surprised because you saw the end of the book instead of the beginning. But don't worryg once you get the hang of turning pages from the left instead of the right, it'lI get easier and easier. Anyway, it's perfectly all right: the Chinese do it this way everyday So sit back, relax and enjoy it! +L . W K ' 5. tlrtffsiiiig iifss. -. 1: l Q .. , , . t .9535 l Here at Booker T. we're famous for selling things. Besides having numerous vending and coke machines, we sold candy sticks, popcorn after school, spirit ribbons, cotton candy, donuts, hot chocolate, T-shirts, spook-o grams and santa grams. We could go on all day. But when we think back, we found that there was one thing it was hard and close to impossible to sell - integration to segregated minds. 3 . .X I Y-Q7 AN Q YP' 'limes X22 fm Dim Q, Q' if Y 1 ff 2 5g:Wi,:f , 2: fm t' A3 . a.5gf1,, a l r Q -ml W, H ., .. , . ,,.,, .M 1 wi? mfxi? 3 Jam- fy. -- 2 TF' To add to all this. the cracking down concerning attendance resembled a hyperactive kindergarten class being forced to take their daily nap. Being absent included catching up on all the soap operas, seeing the housewives and temporarily unemployed bachelors competing for title of Head Idiot on game shows, the morning movie, and staying in bed while mom waited on us with hot chicken soup and jello. But returning to school the next day and filling out a make-up sheet, which was the equivalent of signing our lives away to six teachers, made us feel that we couldn't miss another day of school come hell or high water. Of course, when the administration realized that this method was not effective or familiar to us at all, they quickly returned to our old odd-hour card- trick, showing their ability to bend with the bad situation. Speaking of bad situations, we had one with a little town called Putnam City, which caused us to loosen our claim on State Championship. 4 PRULOGUE 6TH HOUR MUSCLE POPULACE ACTION 81 APATHY EPILOGUE INDEX .J 4 I Life at a school with few or no assemblies is like a box of crackerjacks without a prize Peering through the windows of the auditorium doors, we saw nothing but scaffolding and bits and pieces of plaster scattered amidst a sea of old seats, standing row after row at attention, waiting to be led away to be replaced by new ones Remembering past assemblies, of trying to see over the 'fro in front of you, or trying to hear with the person behind talking to his neighbor, we hoped our auditorium would be, finished by next school year so we wouldn't have to walk through the chilly autumn weather to the boys gym just to hear lVlr. Mayes tell us to stop writing on the bathroom walls. But we were lucky: by spring, the auditorium was opened and we had our stage. if 1 -if .X , f 1,51 'S' 2'-H fhwawmgw MKQJH my M f' ,Yam ff X, Xffcgzrggyl N iiii ,J ' X fl , it Qi Qi J 7 S gajtlqgfc , vi vii ji 7 , kf 'm'sX vlbgiiitii' NX N XLS vt X f V., XJR y i But perhaps the long walk could have done some of us good because of our conduct in some of the assemblies. Miss Hornet nominees, for instance. If a white girl had won Miss Hornet there would be trouble, or so was the rumor. But why? Why would it be so bad having a white queen of this school? Would she really spoil the tradition of being an all black school? But remember, BTW isn't an all black school. We can't stop white girls from running but maybe we can change the name of the position, and start a new traditiong Miss BTW, for starters, so the old tradition of having an all black line of Miss Hornets will stand. l i Qt . ,llzfiiflfi hs, MW' ifviorlfeg l 8 l9rt Christmastime: A time of cheer and goodwill. We celebrated at school by having a large Christmas tree invading the front hall. Decorated with Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkas, every religion was included in the spirit. Two things contributed to diminish our spirits, though. One was that our vacation only extended as far as the 2nd of January, causing us to return for the tail end of a week. The other, occuring right before vacation started, was the summons to an all-black assembly. The original purpose of this assembly may not have been intended as harmful, but obviously the results were. lt seemed to cause tension and resentment between races, since after vacation, this resentment and tension resulted in strained black-white relations, and graffiti onthe bathroom walls, which portrayed both races' opinions on whose school it was. 1 9232 l 9 S it 3 Qisd 4' M I 4 5 fi It 'S Passing the super cool dudes standing on the walls burdening our already overorowed tile jungles, we listen closely and hear them talk about getting over on the fine chick with the sexy blue jeans. But really they ain't gonna do nothing cause they'lI just stand there talking. N f .NM i If K A' 5. 2 fl . xx , , 1 HN fr , Z -. 39 , X git! Gerald Ford and Rockefeller moved into the offices of the U.S. without a single vote. The prices of everything went up. Gas was half a buck per gallon and unemployment climbed the ladder too. Prices were high -the jobs low. The many and varied car rebates were attempts to help a lagging industry. Ford's plan of deficit spending caused much debate in the House. And to add to much - ERA went down in defeat another time. Making us wonder about our backwards Oklahoma. 12 lf' il I 3 w ..-I H fx-f ik af -as J 4 . Q I, a 1. Q9-f 1 -31 N, y 1... Following locked bathrooms and a few fights, tensions between blacks and whites were at the boiling point. So we held student-teacher workshops in first hour to encounter these problems head-on. Many of the sessions had good results, but, of course, we had some that didn't put too much into it. A nice surprise we did find, however was getting out of school two Fridays in a row at one o'clock so teachers could have workshops. One thing dampened our view of this happening though. One of the local TV stations called to inquire if we were dismissed early because of the racial riots we were having. But fights do occur everywhere. We couldn't imagine a school without its fights! Why, that's almost un-American! lt would be like a baseball game without hot-dogs, apple-pie without vanilla ice cream or even Los Angeles without smog. But don't get us wrongg we had some fun and games, too . . . 15 JL? Q f M vi f ,f , I ...nann- 6. 2 x wif Then, some possible answers were introduced to ease our minds concerning these things. We looked ahead at solutions to problems like asphalting the area between the girls gym and the cafeteria, lwhich is usually a mud-hole after it rainsl, paving the smoke hole, and fencing in the parking lot. Others were smaller ones, like painting the halls and Iunchroom, replacing the twenty-five year old master clock which malfuntions and throws off practically every clock in the school, touching up rooms defaced by installation of air conditioning and looking for a new PA system. These were all some things to look forward to and whether they were taken care of or not, identifying them and trying to solve them was the first step of getting things our way. 17 ,f ,ffw ff' ' f- Xmas -un.. r I 1 3 X .Z 6TH HOUR MUSCLE GIRLS SPORTS GIRLS SOFTBALL VOLLEYBALL ? At the end of the season we entered the playoffs with confidence. Why not? We were a winning team. lt is hard for a winning team to lose. We were met on the field by a tough bunch of Putnam City Pirates. We lost. But did Putnam City win or did we give it to them? When you get 160 yards in penalties you don't lose, you give the game away. At the end of the game the scoreboard read 15- 14. The fans filed slowly out of the stadium in disbelief. Driving home after the game we heard on the radio that the Hale Rangers also lost it didn't feel so bad. Then there is always next year. 3 ' ff .- ....-. s-Mavis.. a : Q ji Qafg' N lx! - I A . .n., ,-i,Q,j A Q '- ' . ....., . .. . . . I - 0 ' EEE'-f11g ,Q,.. Q , , 55 -S M . ,-,vw Nik f .Sy 3' tf. Green has brought a lot of different things into a lot of different lives. For instance, how often have you seen your principal unwrapping a 10c grape sucker, seriously expecting to find lt's a winner! , and read the disappointment in his face when he finds it's not? Think about the teachers. . . he is their leader. Not the kind that lines everyone up in single file and numbers them off in twos and threes and marches step in step. But the kind of leader that makes being led, fun for at least tolerablel. He's the one you've seen every day standing between the office and cafeteria. He talks to us, not in his office, but in ours. . . the halls. You'll also know him by about sixty spirit ribbons and a mustache and a smile for everyone. Oh, him? I thought a principal always wore a suit and tie and sat behind a desk I Saitek Wage and . signed papers and stuff. But he looks like a person. He can't be the principal. But he has us convinced, so he must be. H.J. It was a contest of who could drive each other crazy first- The Oklahoma Eagle or the Hornet Voice staff. Coach Brewer was in there fighting against broken type machines and presses that didn't work, alienated staffers and missed dead lines. The quarterbacks - Donna D. and Craig - called the shots as they were and ended up with some pretty darn good newspapers. Among the other shortages this year was a shortage of ad money coming in to bolster the economy of the Hornet Voice. We had fun trying to interview George Harrison or Billy Preston and one of our editors was an attendant to Miss Hornet. fNo, not Craig, dummyl. There seemed to be an eternal great battle between the Paper Punks and the Yearbook Yo Yo's. Would you believe a gala 12 page Christmas issue that al- most came out in January? Does it represent the devil, evil and a curse? No, it's beautiful, magnificent and cold-blooded. They gave us a week and told us to express our heritage but there was a question. How can we really get involved when for so long we've been forgotten? We elected a queen, sponsored a dance and had an assembly that let everybody know we were proud of our heritage and our people, and will continue to be proud as long as our skin remains BLACK. SPEECH STUDENTS COIVIPETE Morning came early to the BTW speech team. 5 or 6 otclock seemed to be a regular starting time for students to bundle bags curlers, scripts, debate briefs and themselves into buses and head off for such exciting places as Muskogee or Miami. There were two special places where selected students were able to compete. Houston: seen from the inside of a car, a motel room and a school room. Fortunately we were able to escape from Houston for some to continue to another, more exciting tourney. New Orleans: we saw a bit more scenery. Someone said something about visiting a sick grandfather on Bourbon Street. And finally, Sweepstakes: Booker T. Anyway, being on Y.B. staff is no glamour trip even though you get your picture on a special page and a certain notoriety from friends after it comes out. At least it's not a light bulb this year. Got any more bright ideas. Wolfing down hamburgers and fries, was one of our more enthusiastic activities the days we stayed after school trying to catch up. We made deadlines on time which was a problem last year. Ms. Brewer advised, encouraged and prodded us on until we came up with a whole yearbook. Taking a backwards - frontwards glance at the yearbook may tell you why you saw the staff in a state of confusion after an hour in room 222. And it was fun decorating our own little corner to work away from the curious eyes of the public. Will you proceed, :lease? Maybe the council wasn't really this bad, aut one meeting might have left you with the mpression that we didn't quite have it together. Drobably the school's biggest club, we started out vith new sponsors, new ideas, new 'epresentatives. But no matter how many times we met, we got the same old results - nothing. Our one big project was a student lounge with which we achieved success. Because of student apathy, even a new president didn't make democratic government a vital force within our school. We can't always find enough of it to do everything we want to whether it is coaching a pee wee baseball club or the mighty Hornet football team. There's always something more important for the school administrators to do, like filling out unexcused tardy and absent slips. What's more, the Board of Education firmly believes that someone who devotes himself mainly to one job, should be paid for that job, and no other. lThere's always the privlledge of being an unpaid assistant coach to heighten a person's delight. Nothing like itll As a result of this shortage of spare time and the Board of Educatlon's city wide directive Irvin Brown will replace Bob Mayes as head football coach and Orlando Hazley will not be coaching the track team next year. Both chose'to remain assistant principals. Pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, erasers, spirals, emergency rubber bands, extra cartridges for ink pens, small containers of Kleenex: supplies for a new school year. But how did we prepare ourselves mentally? We conformed at first so we could observe from the sidelines, then as we began to test the water a little, we grew into individuals and made attempts at communication that we applauded ourselves for starting. But we got to the point of no returng we began to talk to each other, thinking we understood. Being new was exciting: being old was feeling looked up to. Being new was importantg being old was being wise. Just being there was the whole fun of it. After completing another year of school, we remember when we were happy, and when we were embarrassed, but never anything in between . . . We hope someday words like race will only pertain to cross country or roller derby. if F W, ,,., Q ' ' S Q an - n J! ' r -if Qin., . 'Ng ws- .ie Fm- , as ,. ., '31 fir. ,QL , ,M wb , .A x ,AQ -5. The book that opened from from the back, the cover without orange and black were just steps to pave the way for allowing BTW's yearbook to become as creative as the mind can be. The '75 Hornet tried to capture all the moments that made it neat being here. The quiet times, the tense and happy times made this book but more importantly each one of us made this book by being ourselves.
