UPERI TE DENT'S MESSAGE GREETINGS AND CONGRATULATIONS Again it is a pleasure to offer greetings and congratulations to all those pupils, teachers and friends of the Booker T. Washington High School who have helped in any way to make the 1959 edition of this high school annual possible. It is a wonderful thing to see pupils in high school have the opportunity, with faculty guidance, to accept responsibility and carry out that responsi- bility for producing a book of this type. The job of working together to develop a year book that is a credit to the student body and to the community is a sizeable task. Moreover, the pleasure that will be given many people in the years to come in living again their highschool experiences through the pages of this book will be another reason that all those persons who served in producing this book have rendered valuable service. My congratulations to you. W. R. Savage, Jr. Superintendent 4

ASSISTA T PRINCIPAL' MESSAGE What Is Truth We often hear the expression Truth will triumph. but what is truth? Truth never changes, but our knowledge of Truth becomes more perfect every day. Because of the way we know Truth, we must fragmentize Truth into many small images. Often these tiny images are blurred and imperfect and incomplete. But this is no reason to despair and cease our efforts to create more perfect clearer images of reality. Truth is a reflection of what is. Truth is a perfect image of reality. Suppose an artist were to paint a portrait of George Washington Carver. Although we might see only the face of Dr. Carver. yet if the artist were successful, we should agree that a true image of a real person had been created. Such an image is true because it is an expression of what really exists. It does not necessarily represent all that exist. Would such a Portrait be any less true because it did not express the whole reality of Doctor Carver ? So too, in science as in art, human knowledge of Truth is limited, but because it is limited, we cannot conclude that therefore it is false. If all of us would strive to perfect human knowledge by seeking truth irrespective to how much it hurts then we would not be guilty of a creeping skepticism which would reduce us to mere vegetables. JAM H. M. Bass, Asst. Principal 6
