Our teachers have contributed a great deal to the formation of a well-rounded personalityg they train students to think independently and accuratelyg they train youth to evaluate evidence and arrive at logical conclusions. They open the door to the probings of great men of every era who have evolved philosophies that serve as guides in our daily living. We, the class of '59, wish to join our nation in the re - cognition of those devoted individuals who are the molders of youth, by dedicating our yearbook to the teachers of Booker T. Washington School. 5 X ,k g it .. , ,Q .Jw . . . 2 4' ' ,,i wr , ' . 4+ :JW dam 8 ' as N, , , 4 4 3 UPERI TE DENT'S MESSAGE GREETINGS AND CONGRATULATIONS Again it is a pleasure to offer greetings and congratulations to all those pupils, teachers and friends of the Booker T. Washington High School who have helped in any way to make the 1959 edition of this high school annual possible. It is a wonderful thing to see pupils in high school have the opportunity, with faculty guidance, to accept responsibility and carry out that responsi- bility for producing a book of this type. The job of working together to develop a year book that is a credit to the student body and to the community is a sizeable task. Moreover, the pleasure that will be given many people in the years to come in living again their highschool experiences through the pages of this book will be another reason that all those persons who served in producing this book have rendered valuable service. My congratulations to you. W. R. Savage, Jr. Superintendent 4 vfx 3? if .4 , ku. -n. Q f if :A If Jw 2 M, sw -,. R , 4 fr, ,, .F k,k, .,n'g,V sffaf Q '-.Ti Vw. ' ,Jug I , , Q- , . W. '4-. Truth never changes, but our knowledge of Truth becomes more perfect every day. Because of the way we know Truth, we must fragmentize Truth into many small images. Often these tiny images are blurred and imperfect and incomplete. But this is no reason to despair and cease our efforts to create more perfect clearer images of reality. Truth is a reflection of what is. Truth is a perfect image of reality. Suppose an artist were to paint a portrait of George Washington Carver. Although we might see only the face of Dr. Carver. yet if the artist were successful, we should agree that a true image of a real person had been created. Such an image is true because it is an expression of what really exists. It does not necessarily represent all that exist. Would such a Portrait be any less true because it did not express the whole reality of Doctor Carver ? So too, in science as in art, human knowledge of Truth is limited, but because it is limited, we cannot conclude that therefore it is false. If all of us would strive to perfect human knowledge by seeking truth irrespective to how much it hurts then we would not be guilty of a creeping skepticism which would reduce us to mere vegetables. CLASS COLORS Pink Blue Carnation an C ASS P0 EM We leave this great institution of learning, Though we will always have a yearning. Through countless days we have toiled with endless pace, In order that we may stay ahead in this great race. Day by day, night by night We've always kept our goal in sight. We have now learned that life is but a game, Where you have to work hard in order to obtain fame. Our memories of these last days will be great, For in our future they will determine our fate. From Dear Ole Booker T., we've gathered a wealth of knowledge Something we won't regret if we don't go to college. W. Maurice Biggs, Jr. CLASS SUNG Dear Booker T., we're leaving now, It hurts us deep to go somehow, Our graduation day is here, But in our hearts we'l1 keep you dear, So comes the time for us to part Although you'll never leave our hearts. For as we say good-bye to thee, Our love won't die, dear Booker T., Though we shall travel separate ways, We can't forget our high school days, Our love for you will never die, God bless you as we say good-bye. Locksley Hall-Tennyson CLASS PROPHECY One day while we were walking down the street, we suddenly passed a fortune teller's place. Having nothing else important to do, we decided to spend a few minutes of our time here looking into the crystal ball. Lo and behold there passed before us the members of the senior class with ten years of their lives having expired. We saw that Maurice Biggs was the head engineer of the Virginia Highway Construction Company. Malcolm Bernard was being considered as the new president of Lipton Tea Company and trying to make Bettie Jean Irby his private secretary. Jency Pittman and Janice Jones were head nurses atJohn Hopkins Hospital. Kelly Lewis was principal of A. J. Brown High School. Phillippa Estes, Patricia Williams, andSpencer Mayfield were appearing at the Metropolitan Opera House. Music connoisseurs of the day were comparing Phillippa's voice to that of Adele Addisong Patricia's, to that of Matiwilda Dobbs 3 and Spencer's to that of William Warfield. Wilbert Bryant, Amos Tillery, and Floyd Malone were running the Three Aces Used Car Lot. Carolyn Williams and Virginia Trower were head captains of the Suffolk Police Force with Rudolph Parker acting as judge of the City Circuit Court. Jacquelyn Chapman was filling out a prescription for Mrs. Tomasina Tillery's Knee Vinesjthird set of twins. Herman Carter and Rudolph Wilkins were the proprietors of the A 8x P Supermarket, Marie Daniels was their bookkeeper. In the field of athletics some members of the class had made lofty advancements. Sylvia Jolly was head basketball coach at Hampton Institute with Anne Boothe and Grace Walters assis- tants. James Lee was head coach at Howard University with Herbert Greene assistant and Algernon Morris trainer. We saw clearly from the posters in Chester's Beauty Shop that the hair styles had changed immensely in ten years. Mildred was showing Sadie Wheeler and Margie Ford the up's and down's of a beauty shop. As the crystal ball gave its last spin, we saw Major Ruffin and Ray Daniels living at Million- aires Row in Buckhorn, Virginia. The last members of the class of '59 to appear were Bernard Boone and Joyce Smith who were running a flirting school in the Dismal Swamp. cf- j ' 1' Prognosticators , Phillippa Estes K v Patricia Williams 1 'A 23 Mrs. Iva Sullivan Junior Sponsor Jean Robinson Melvin Allen Olivia Shields Richard Wilson John Riddick Branda Holley Shirley Lee Edward Pittman Helen Johnson Hurley Johnson Ronald Hart Peggy Scott Philip Moss Betty Williams Roy Gambrell .Li tk YM y Ri 4 Mary Alice Watson x WW .-5 JU IORS Beulah Mitchell -in-5 ku 4 . , Edward Gardner 2 1 Mr. Charles Christ1a.n Junior Sponsor Jefferson Knight Elizabeth Barrett Y - EL?
