With no regular journalism class these teachers gave their own free time to supervise their staffs in the pro- duction of many fine yearbooks. We hope that the 1963 Totem Pole is as well edited as those which they supervised with patience and untold hard work. 1 LAWRENCE ROUDYBUSH TREASURER HOMER MIESSE CLERK BOARD OF EDUCATION LAWRENCE PLATT Chairman 3 MR'. The team is composed solely of sophomores and its purpose is to enable more boys to be able to play basketball in our high school, and to allow these sophomores to gain the experience and poise needed to play good varsity ball later on in high school. 82 Freshman basketball athletes for 1963 are, front row: D. TRACK FIELD TRACK -1963 This year's track season, although undistinguished, produced three new school records, one of which (broad jump) was broken three times. Skip Aldridge, a Sopho- more, set a new record of 4 minutes, 50 seconds in the mile run; Frank Jones set two new marks: 20.2 seconds in the low hurdles, and 23 feet, 7 1 4 inches in the broad jump. Other lettermen who helped push the team to a fourth in the E. K. L. and fifth at the Atchinson Relays were: Butch Aldridge, Gene Cunningham, Wayne MacDonald, Clayton McGee, Jock Merriam, Carl Peoples, Steve Cavanaugh, Jerry DeFries, Ronald Jones, Bill Price, Dennis Paxton, Harry Papineau, Wayne Sack, LeVoide Simpson, and Ray Vaughn. Frank posts his record for the second time. He broke it once more before the season ended. Straining for every extra inch he can get, Ronnie Preparing to let fly with his javelin, follows through his javelin throw. LONGEST JUMP IN STATE MEET HISTORY At the Kansas state track meet this spring, Frank Jones wrote a new mark for broad jump in the books. It was the longest known jump by a high school stu- dent in Kansas haitory, and the longest official jump in Kansas state meet history. Coach Cox feels that Frank's efforts helped spur two other boys-- Wayne MacDonald and LeVoide Simp- son--to make consistent jumps of over twenty feet. Frank's winning jump--23 7 1 4 . The towel marks 24 feet. Harry stretches out over a hurdle during his pre-race warm-up. Dick Wasson, pole vaulter, attempts to clear the bar during one of the season's meets. 104 Hey, Ron, look alive; the coach is looking this way ! As Bonner’s first big stage production, an all-boy cast presented Stalag 17, April 24, and 25. Uniforms used during World War II were obtained from Fort Leavenworth, and 'Nazi' uniforms were shipped in from New York. To assist the 19-boy cast, the stage crew consisted of fifteen girls who were in charge of the production. It was dramatics instructor Dale Veach's last play at Bonner Springs Rural High School. The stage crew for Stalag 17 consisted of the following students: Roger Loehr, Brooke Lilly, Cheryl Falk, Tommy Hautteur, Kathy Hoffine, Mary Jo Seyler, Nancy Mikesich, Sandy Carter. PROM In the courtyard of an ancient Roman mansion, the Junior-Senior Prom was one of the most gala affairs of recent years. The theme, Three Coins in A Fountain, was emphasized by a center fountain which contained live goldfish, and several coins. The refreshment table sported a smaller fountain which spurted punch as a refreshment. Nut cups shaped as chariots, gold and white programs, and flowered twined candles made memorable souvenirs. The program, obtained through the Kansas City Conservatory of Music, provided the Master of Ceremonies, two vocalists, an accordianist, and several comedians. As always, though, the students provided the best enter- tainment as they danced to the music of the David Vanzant Band. XJ7 ROME WASN’T BUILT DAY! BACCALAUREATE May 19 marked the date for Baccalaureate Service. Reverend Leslie Thomas, Baptist Minister, gave the sermon. He emphasized the need to keep our faith in keeping step with today's world. Reverend Don Dunn, of the Edwardsville Christian Church, gave the class response after a short program by the Girls' Glee Club. Baccalaureate, one of the two major events to close the senior year, was a time of reverence. GRADUATION-1963 The sixty-third Annual Commencement Program graduated seventy-three eager Seniors, May 24. Student speakers were Dennis Bowker, Jerry Hoskins, Salutatorian, Sylvia Littlejohn; and Valedictorian, Mary Ann Miesse. Before the presentation of diplomas, Class President, Bob Branson presented a table-top podium and amplifying system as the class gift to the school. He also gave our foreign exchange student, Marinella Lia, a watch as the class’ token of esteem, and informed the audience of the class' $125 donation to the Osawatomie Teen-Age Fund. 110 CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 1963 ED ROBERTS CHEVROLET Compliments of COIFFURES OF FASHION Phone GI 1-1126 Congratulat ions SENIORS From The BONNER SPRINGS LUMBER COMPANY Phone HA-2-2022 113 Compliments of FINK'S FRUIT SUPPLY COMPANY Remember Good fruits Are Always FINK'S Congratulations to The Class of 1963 LONE STAR CEMENT CORPORATION PORTLAND CEMENT MANUFACTURERS HA 2-1050 BLAIR MOTOR SERVICE Wheel A1ignment and General Repair Work Phone HA 2-1046 JACKSON 66 SERVICE STATION Edwardsville Kansas 114 Compliments of REYNOLDS BODY SHOP Phone GI 1-1280 Edwardsville, Kansas INTER-STATE FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION 132 Oak Street Bonner Springs, Kansas Phone HA 2-3088 Insured Savings - Home Loans BONNER SPRINGS WALLPAPER AND PAINT Seidlitz and Sherwin-Williams Paints Wallcrest, Birge, Imperial, Walltey and Fabrique Wal1 papers HA 2-3073 Bonner Springs 119 Oak FEDERATED STORE 123 Oak Street Compliments of Mr. Mrs. Al Hautter THE DARI-DINE MODERN CRAFTSMAN BREWERS FOOD FEST All Nat ional Brands Complete Line of Frozen Foods Fresh Meats Vegetables Newest Most Modern Stores In Kansas 605 East Front Street 115 Compliments to the Class of 1963 BEN FRANKLIN STORES Don Coffman Manager BEN FRANKLIN WATSON BROTHERS DRUG COMPANY- INC.
