Sweetwaters' defense was tops in the county and seemed to have it together against Bonita. The Baron oftense was Hat, and against the Sweetwater defense they couldn't do a thing. Baron defense also wasn't executing its potential and the final 30-O score was evidence of the Barons' disappointment, In the following game the Barons faced lVlarian with confidence and a positive attitude, only to be let down against the Hred-up Crusaders. Conditions looked promising as the Barons moved to a touchdown early in the game, assuring the Barons ofthe lead. Later, in the last moments of the lVlarian game, the Crusaders moved to within field goal range and kicked the winning Held goal to win 17-16. It was an emotional loss for the exhausted Barons and the Rowdy Rooter fans. The Barons' usually big game with Castle Park was dampened by rain. The Baron team couldn't seem to get nred up for the game, with the Trojans scoring so many points in the nrst half. The Baron defense played exceptionally the second half and held them scoreless, but it was too late. is 1 The Barons celebrated Homecoming with a victory over the Southwest Raiders the following week, taking advantage of Southwests' poor playing and lack of confidence. Offense was consistent and powerful, easily breaking through the Raider defense. The Barons were next matched with Coronado, confident of a win. The first half was slow and never seemed to get off the ground for the Barons, yet in the second half Bonita moved forward to overtake the Islanders, 22-6. The season came to a close with a victory against the lVlar Vista lVlariners. The Barons who had improved greatly over the course of the season dominated both offensively and defensively, with the final score 14-3. Although Bonita Vista showed some excellent talent and good football techniques, they failed to capture a CIF berth. Yet with the new knowledge of their expectations and necessary goals to work toward, the '77 season should be an improvement and lead to another future championship team.
