His hard work and dedication have made possible the com- pletion of numerable tasks for the better- ment of Bonita Vista. Last spring, while continuing his pressing duties at Hilltop High School, he met with officials, inter- viewed teachers, and successfully organ- ized our school administration. We appre- ciate Mr. Geyer's sense of pride and duty toward our school, and that he is here to help us solve our problems in a calm, efficient, and effective manner. With our deepest respect and gratitude, .M as ' 5 we, the staff, dedicate this EXCALIBUR to fe-35 so as fy o principal, guide and counselor, Mr. f QL .5 .M if . , L. Geyer. With their help, several traditions have been started and school spirit is abundant among stu- dents and faculty. Students seldom realize how much the faculty and administration does for us. By helping to develop and improve our working habits and other activities outside of school, the faculty presents to us a series of exciting challenges which give us the desire to learn, to gain more information and to study things we have never heard of before. The teachers and vice-principals set goals for us to attain, we are always striving to do so. Encouragement is always near, if needed. As their teach- ers helped them to succeed in life they are helping us. Numerous activities have been pro- moted with the assistance of teachers and the administration. They always have ideas and suggestions on hand for when we run out. Although we students sometimes disagree with the opinions of our instructors, we have now learned how to respect and value their views. Many students are surprised at the concern expressed over us by the Ad- ministration. The counselors know when we are having trouble in a certain class, and do what they can to help us. lf it is necessary we are transferred to a class more suitable to our abilities. All of this and much more, is what our faculty and administration does for us. Each year we become increasingly grateful for all they do. I YI 0 N , ,.44'9 MR RHBERTL ciiviaiz PRINCIPAL ln his tireless efforts to achieve many goals, Mr. Geyer has won the respect of all those who've known him. The experience he has acquired while working with other high schools has proved to be invaluable and has played a great part in the founding of Bonita Vista. Although his duties as Principal take up much of his time, Mr. Geyer has been present at all major activities this year. He is extremely loyal to our school and has in this first year accomplished many goals which took other schools years to achieve. Bonita Vista High School is fortunate to have such an estimable man for a principal. MR. DAVID NOE, BOYS' VICE-PRINCIPAL Mr. Noe, as the Boys' Vice-Principal, is known to be strict, firm, and demanding of discipline. Besides these characteristics he has a great sense of humor and a warm and sincere heart. He takes an active stand in school activities and is often seen in the most unex- pected places. MRS. MABEL SHUMAN GIRLS VICE PRINCIPAL To many students, Mrs. Shuman is a familiar person. She's frequently interrupted W by students with small and large problems. The nature of the problem is of no im- portance, she assists all who come. Her assistance is of great significance and value to all who attend Bonita Vista. Mrs. Shuman, who enjoys working with new schools because they offer exciting challenges, has done marv- elous work here and greatly improved our school. 2 .N l s i f W wwf A ... si, NIR. TOMLINSON - COUNSELOR QYf5maQleiT iw fl W N N 'up WMM? lu WV rv li Mr. Eason, like Mr. Tomlinson, has two grades to counsel, ninth and sev- enth. He has patience, and is willing to listen to the problems of several hun- dred students. Students find it easy to talk to their counselors who are willing to help in any way. Being a-counselor is never an easy job, but counseling for two grades takes someone who has patience and likes teenagers. The eighth and tenth grade advisor, Mr. Tomlinson, has both of these qualifications. MR. EASON - COUNSELOR gifted ,J-nl w'gZ'45 Su 2 , l 1 'e w ' 1 1 nt' v sv, nt, ws, . During the beginning of the year, every- thing at BV was new and different. How- ever, in just a few weeks, students had grown accustomed to school routine here at Bonita Vista. The Spirit of '67 was quick to start, and continued throughout the year. Our everyday school activities helped to increase our loyalty toward BVHS. Games, assemblies, dances, and other special activities all contributed to the success of our school. However, our suc- cess was not easily come by, but required a great deal of time and effort before it became a reality. Speciality groups such as the bands. glee clubs, drill team, maiorettes, and cheerleaders all surmounted great difficul- ties before they actually became organized groups. Life at Bonita Vista was not all work and worry, however. Activities such as the Baronial Ball, Sports Night, Crazy Hat Day, Color Day, and Spirit Week all added to the fun and excitement here. The student life section is filled with the pleasant memories and recollections of all BV students. Some of the most prominent include the elated happiness when we defeated Hilltop in a football game, the tension during overtime in the llllar Vista versus BVHS basketball game, the excitement during our first Sports Night, the respect when gold-medal win- ner, Mr. Billy Mills, spoke at our school, the suspense when our ASB officers were elected, the pride when we first raised our victory flag, and the anticipation when our first Football Queen was chosen. These emotions helped to unite students at Bonita Vista. As our school developed through the enthusiasm and hard work of the student body, the Spirit of '67 also grew. This spirit which led BVHS through the year inspired all Barons. Something as intang- ible as this can not be recorded on the pages of a yearbook. Instead, the student life section has captured the students. activities, and groups which have molded Bonita Vista High School and the Spirit of '67. MWF WWW XWMLW WEW ff WM 3 ?uiinin X Nj L67 Yi! Also during this first month cheerleading tryouts were held and BV maiorettes performed for the first time during a game. Pos- ters, signs, and witty slogans sur- rounded Barons as aspirants for offices campaigned for their posi- tions. The Barons initiated another lively tradition in the form of a Crazy Hat Day. From the weird and colorful assortment of head gear, a creation by E. Kaupplia was chosen as most original. 3 W9 Q N R! JANUARY yt erry-covered faces emerged fbi om the pie-eating contest held I at an after-dance during Spirit LX! Week. Dampened spirits were ex- pected after the loss to Hilltop that night but the mighty Barons , came through with their usual en- thusiasm and made it a success. Also during the month of Janu- ary was the whale hunt on Mis- sion Bay, sponsored by the BVHS science classes. FEBRUARY The short month of February witnessed many delighted viewers attending the faculty versus lV game. The audience grew tense as the fast moving game got un- der way. Also during Sports Night, the G.A.A. defeated the Girls' League while all the girls scurried around in boxing gloves. BVHS had start- ed another tradition with Sports Night. APRIL Accompanied by the arrival of Spring was a new chance for stu- dents to make the most of their opportunities before the closing of another school year. Clash- Day was filled with an array of colors and prints, which left no doubt that this day was correctly named. Slave Day was another fun-filled day in April. The Sock Hop was sponsored by the EX- CALIBUR staff. MAY Coming with the appearance of sunny skies above Bonita Vista was a more relaxed classroom at- mosphere. During the month of May, students and teachers both seemed to benefit from more in- formal discussions held during class. Mother's Day was the occasion which rated a fashion show given by the Girls' League and the homemaking class. DECEMBER December proved to be a very busy month for most Bonita Bar- ons. Tying in with holiday prep- arations, was the Girls' League Baronial Ball held December 16. During this month, the official dedication for Bonita Vista High was held in the school gymna- sium. Students looked forward to a Merry Christmas and a jolly holi- day season. MARCH Highlighting March was Easter Vacation, which provided a wel- come relief from classrooms for both students and teachers. Spring sports such as tennis. golf, baseball, and track were in- troduced to BV students during this month. Other activities included a St. Patrick's Day Dance, a lollipop sale, and tryouts for Glee Club soloists. JUNE As the school year came to a close, it brought sighs of relief and anticipation of summer. On June 2, a dance was given which boosted Baron spirits during the last week of school. The year- books were distributed, and stu- dents had them signed by friends and teachers. The freshman class brought the year to an end with a dance on June ninth which proved to be a great success. Our ASB officers contributed greatly to the spirit and morale of our school. The efficiency of our school government helped encourage students to participate more actively. New and different ideas were contributed for the benefit of Bonita Vista High. lt was a difficult iob developing our student government into a working organi- zation. However, the success of the ASB officers and the rest of the student body can be seen today through the progress of Bonita Vista. Heading Bonita's first student govern' ment, was ASB president Doug Single. Second in authority was John Buttitta, vice-president. Sue Krzywicki, a ninth grader, served as our first ASB secretary. These three students did their best in helping Bonita Vista become the greatest school in the district. Officers for BVHS were not chosen until November 1. The reason for this delay was to give the students an opportunity to be- come acquainted before elections. Those who ran for an ASB office put up a vigor- ous and enthusiastic campaign. The effort exerted helped our government to progress. Bonita Vista QT A... .... . . ff' 'Wi -M Progresses Rapidls The Student Committee, founded in April, 1966, was made up of students from Hilltop, Granger, and Castle Park lunior Highs, each of which were represented by two students each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth grade classes who met the challenge of getting Bonita Vista High School organ- ized with driving determination. Members of the Student Committee were our first student government representatives. A few of the problems they had to deal with were choosing school colors and school nicknames for the student body to vote on when school officially opened in September. They accomplished much and made decisions which otherwise would have taken up valuable time during the school year. Because of diligence and persistent efforts on their part, the '66-'67 year at Bonita Vista got off to a great start. The student body of Bonita Vista High owes a tremendous amount of' gratitude to their Student Committee. The Student Committee is to be commended for the excellent quality of its work. Advising the Com- mittee was Mr. Schanke. ASB Officers, Doug Single, Sue Krzywicki, and John Buttitta, confer during their lunch hour. All of our ASB officers, senators, and as- sembly members worked together in pro- ducing a first class Bonita Vista govern- ment. The unity in student government displayed our great Spirit of '67. Assembly members and senators served as a link between the student body and the ASB officers. Our first year provided a number of tasks for those involved in government to perform. A Bonita Vista constitution had to be drafted, and students were anxious to set traditions. These iobs were effi- ciently handled by our ASB government. As part of his presidential duties, presi- dent Doug Single speaks at a Senate meeting. Senators, Commissioners Form Vicki Byrd Suzanne Bureton Student Store Service Senators and commissioners composed an important part of our student government. Five senators from each grade were chosen by their classmates to represent their individual interests in all activities. Senators attended meet- ings and, by contributing ideas, were able to give fair stu- dent body representation. Before acquiring the job of commissioner, students had to win the approval of the ASB. After being accepted, Bo- nita Vista's nine different commissioners settled down to the hard work at hand. Each commissioner had his own individual area which he represented. Senators and commissioners added their new thoughts to Bonita Vista High School's already abundant supply of original ideas. The very backbone of Bonita Vista's Spirit of '67 lies in the enthusiasm pro- lected by our Concert Band. ln order to present a truly beneficial and enjoyable assembly, our Pep Commissioner Carol Lechner has arranged so that all Baron supporters can listen to the talent in our Concert Band. The thirty-eight band mem- bers, under the leadership of Mr. Sumner, often are called upon to perform a few of the many pieces they have mastered this year. Band members not only work ferverish- ly at school refining their music, but they also practice daily in their homes. The Pep Band now exists as an indispensable organ of the student body. Bonita Vistans found themselves looking forward to at- tending assemblies, and football and bas- ketball games when the band would play their familiar tunes. Without this group of assemblyh individuals in the Pep Band, Bonita Vista lust would not be complete. After selection by the student body, these girls were confronted with the task of learning new cheers. Having designed and made their uniforms they performed the fol- lowing week at the Vista game. Each girl considered being selected a great honor, and hours of practice were put forth to prove her worthiness of being cheerleader. With undying enthusiasm, our Junior Varsity pep squad supported the Barons at every game and led us with spirit- ed leaps and cheers. But cheering at games was not the extent of their duties. The eight girls also set an example of pride and interest in their school which inspired us other students. The cheerleaders, symbol of the Spirit of '67, repre- sented the spirit of the student body as a whole. pgggd M u K Cheryl Gibson i fx! Chris Miles 9 allll .v ll gl Gale Speegle The fine Baron Spirit of '67 was displayed by our Bonita drill team during the first year of its existence. Like many other specialty groups the Baronettes had difficulties with uniforms and new routines. However, with the help of their advisor, Miss Gale Evans, their captain, Debbie Roberts, and their four lieutenants, the drill team developed into a very organized marching unit. At the beginning of the year, the Baronettes sported, as uniforms, white bermudas with blue and gold stripes on the sides, a Baron sweatshirt, and blue tennis shoes. The Baronettes first appearance was at the Bonita versus Hilltop game. The drillteam then continued to do a fine job performing at all the other football games The thirty-eight girls who were members of our drill team kept up a high scholastic standard which enabled them to retain their membership in the Baronettes. These girls spent extra time after school practicing marching and doing their routines. Because of their interest and participation in school activities, these girls have contributed greatly to the formation of a winning school. Campus clubs combine the two aspects of school life: activities and academics. Such clubs also provide outlets for creative in- terests and deviation from classroom cur- riculum. The enthusiasm of the studentry has given our clubs a tremendous start toward success. Through many hours of hard work and planning by the advisors and student club officers, sixteen clubs were established this year with more organizations planned for next. Four clubs, S Club, Service Club, Girls' League, and Key Club, were organized solely for the purpose of service. Definitely the quotation, Service via Spirit, is a good description of the dedication that these organizations exhib- ited Four organizations, Citizenship, Letter- men, C.S.F., and Scholarship are honorary, giving proper respect to those individuals who have achieved great heights, and thus contributed to the glory of the Baron spirit. The remaining eight clubs, Modern Dance, Drama Club, Speech Club, Spanish Club, Pep Club, G.A.A., and the News- paper and the Annual staff, have no con- nection with each other, but have sought by working individually in their own par- ticular field to promote such an organi- zation that would not only live up to the goal set by that club, but to the high standards of the sixteen clubs here at Bonita Vista High School. lVlost surely, we can be proud of the many accomplish- ments of our clubs. In spite of this awkward situation, the tenth graders seemed to head the school very efficiently. Cliff Mello, first Sophomore President, together with Kandie Newing, the Vice- President, and tenth grade Secretary-Treasf urer Terry Bowers, planned and organized the many school activities that were spon- sored by the tenth graders during all of last year. These student body officers established the Sophomore key and started the collection of future senior dues. Though our Junior Varsity was only composed of ninth and tenth graders, we proved to have had a very successful year in all the sports in which we competed. The tenth graders took on many of the seats in student government. A.S.B. Presi- dent, Doug Single, did an excellent job of starting off the school. Sophomores filled many of the offices for Commis- sioners, and also had representatives in the Senate, and the Assembly. Leading our school in spirit were Bar- bara Howard, Head Cheerleader, Kandie Newing, Assistant Head Cheerleader, Gale Speegle, Chris Miles, Terry Bowers, Linda Cowert, lan Alexander and Cheryl Gibson. With the guidance of the Advisor, Miss Kimball, the girls strived to generate and promote enthusiasm in all school activities throughout the student body. Without the help of Mr. Tomlinson and Mr. Schanke the sophomores would not have been such a great success. The three girls elected: Chris Gor- den, Sandy Ives, and Jane Nelson, had the responsibility of leading their class, and demonstrating their leadership with the prime of their ability, for they were the first officers elected, and their leader- ship would be used as an example to the class officers in the future. This was not only a big responsibility, but also a priv- ilege. It is hoped that these people will prolong their dedication to Bonita Vista and continue to accept responsibility. The ninth graders will be the first class of this school to graduate into the tenth grade. Contrary to general procedure, they will remain here-a privilege because this school is Bonita Vista. The Freshman class has contributed much to our school in the academic field, in athletics, and in their leadership as up- perclassmen. Almost every ninth grader has worked hard to make this class re- spected, and they have succeeded. In fu- ture, may these students continue to con- tribute their best to the prosperity of Bo- nita Vista High School. 7 f ff f ,V Ziff g , ff ,Jw fW17fzif,f!1 4' Mr. Eason 7th and 9th Grade Counselor Joann Allen Mi e Andrea Lynn Andreoli Yvonne ACGVQS Christopher Aitchison iw V 11444 fem M2242 ffl' M? VV V ?W 86 The marvelous success of Bonita Vista's first year in sports is the result of determined hard work and sacrifice by the coaches and their teams. Overcoming the handicap of their inexperience they exhibited a deter- mined drive and enthusiasm which foretells winning seasons in Bonita's future. We have many hopes for the future of Cross Country teams at our school. Although they didn't have a tremendous season, they provided tough competition. Our gridders had a suc- cessful season this year and it appears we will be hard to beat next year. inexperience didn't hold back the Bonita Vista matmen. Barons sent seven wrestlers to C.l.F. finals with three boys going all the way to the semi-finals. Our Sophomore basketball team had a somewhat un,-sensational season although their magnificent spirit and un- equaled sportsmanship provided an excellent example to our school and many others. BV's junior varsity cagers were enthusiastic throughout their unsuccessful season. Golf, one of the first of our varsity teams, is de- termining towering goals. This year the Tennis team intends to end the season a winning team. Our Baseball and Track teams are improving immensely. This first season was a very important one, despite the fact we did not have a varsity team. We are all very proud to remember the first game Bonita Vista ever played, against Fallbrook. Whale hunt Buses leaving --.....g- Lunch scene New people. New school. And a new way of life. When the 1966 school year commenced our eighth grade was given the opportunity to participate in making Bonita Vista an excellent high school.Their arrival was accompanied by a sense of spirit and an understanding eagerness to learn and enjoy a new type of school life -a kind of school life they would be proud of. This eighth grade was an impor- tant asset in sending Bonita Vista off with a good start. llllore than one-fourth of this boost was given by Bonita's largest class, the eighth grade. Through this year they proiected a challenging spirit while com- peting for recognition as a distinct class. The eighth graders have been recognized by the Associated Student Body as having the highest A.S.B. card sales at Bonita Vista High in 1966. Eighth graders were represented in the senate of the Associated Student Body by Danny Weinberger, Laura Switzer, Cindy Carnahan, Susan Swift, and David Arendt. Their determination, drive, and ambition helped to create a motivating force in the new Bonita Vista High School Senate. Being placed into a new high 'school takes maturity and understanding, even a little courage. It was realized that in order to make Bonita Vista an outstand- ing school, the underclassmen would have to conform to high school life. The stu- dent body felt that the eighth grade dealt with the obstacles as they arose. Together the class took great pride in developing Bonita Vista. Their support tired enthus- iasm at many events. This rising class speaks well for Bonita's future. The eighth grade pep section generated much spirit at assemblies , ,, . For the seventh graders, the first year at Bonita Vista High proved to be some- what of a challenge. Being at high school they experienced and enjoyed some of the benefits of high school students. This transition, from an elementary school to a senior high was a real change, but the seventh grade students have proven that they are able to undertake any problem with great ease. By proiecting such invigorating spirit, the seventh graders have promoted several of many school programs thereby arousing enthusiasm in the entire school. These underclassmen selected the winning name ot our annual. The Spirit of 67 has shown through by the lively pep dis- played this year at athletic events, dances, and assemblies. ln the future they will feel they helped make Bonita a success. Not only have they helped the school, but the school aided them, by rounding out their per- sonalities, helping them to find new friends and making them better people. We are grateful to these seventh grade pupils for partaking so sincerely in many school activities thereby setting a pace for the remainingthree grades. We can feel confident that when these young people have advanced toward a higher academic level,'they will embody the leadership qualities that it takes to carry out the de- mands of an Associated Student Body. The seventh grade has shown that they are proud of our school, proud to be Barons. We EXCALIBUR SPONSORS This first year for Bonita Vista was the most important one. As one of the many firsts, the EXCALIBUR also is one. As we drive down one Chula Vista business dis- trict, the enterprising drive of Bonita Vista's sponsors is revealed. Their support of the Baron's student body was through their advertising. lt displayed their in- terests in the future of the community. They have their goals and hopes much the same as we do, they are constantly trying to achieve them. By sponsoring this year- book and giving us the encouragement, they also benefit. The advertising will help these establishments prosper and meet their goals. Through the generosity of the South Bay merchants they have helped to meet the financial requirements of our an- nual. Help us show our appreciation. Let's patronize their stores. xxw mnmm. xxxxxxw- mmnmrm xxgxx xxn K !:!?FFFFFFF!pg. . XNW ,XXXN - N, XXX lg NN QX v P X xx 1. gig? As of the newest high school in the district, we amazed many with our success in athletics and scholastic achievements Bonita Vista hasecome a long way from the barren land and the empty buildings of September. The grounds are now green and the buildings are no longer empty. Our Student Committee worked all summer, but even with their outstanding abilities the foundations of our great school spirit couldn't solidly be built until the students themselves voted on A.S.B. officers, school colors, and a school nickname. We can take pride in the fact that we have set traditions worthy of the Barons to follow. We will leave Bonita Vista High for the summer knowing that we are leaving it a better place. There is still a lot to be ac- complished, but we have made an excellent start. Following years will also be filled with the setting of traditions but this year has surely been the most significant. o Thanks to the students, the faculty, and most of all to the Spirit of 76772 Bonita Vista High School is the greatest! ...t .gc g 4 . as - 'fdfn 6lfL,b6 11 4' 'J 5.
