v t ali ol Barnson, Excel lt is a rare and unique experience to help open a new school, reminisced Larry Bray, the original chairperson of the Social Studies Depart- ment at Bonanza. He con- tinued, t'There was such an air of excitement and expec- tancy! Everyone was new to each other, and the building was new tand smelled like ity, the furniture and equipment were all new, and the rugs had so much static electricity in them that we all got a major shock four or five times a day. The students were still loyal to their old high schools and they tended to band together in class andlor hallways and stare suspiciously at each other. It took some time before they forgot the past and became 'Bengals'. Bonanza actually started on a shoestring. Inflation had severely raised prices and it took some time before the teaching equipment and necessary teaching supplies were obtained. There was no money to paint the outside or the inside halls as they appear now. Mr. Bray stated, One of ence! the truly great improvements that we have seen in recent years is the attractive painting that has been done. Student groups paid for additions such as the Proud and Powerful Bengal tiger in the quad. Mr. Bray completed his thoughts by saying, I can't believe ten years have pass- ed! lt truly seems like only yesterday. This I can say for certain at this point - I am glad to be a part of Bonanza High School, and I hope the next ten years are as fulfilling and productive as l feel the last ten were. Mrs. Eileen Massi and Mrs. Glenna Engkraft, both of whom began the Physical Education program at Bonan- za, summed up the feelings of all the Bengal first-decade teachers when they said, As each graduating class leaves behind its unique memory, and as we hear of the many successes of those that have preceded them, we feel proud to have been a part of Bonan- za's beginning and growth these past ten years.
