Ill MBIll0I'IlllIl . . . Two days after the space shuttle Challenger exploded on January 28, killing the seven astronauts on board, senior Helena Cooper presented Bonanza's student government with her plan to honor the dead astronauts. I was upset about the shuttle accident - I felt something had to be done to remember them. I thought Bonanza students should set an exam- ple, Helena said. As a result of Helena's ideas, Bengals donated more than 81,900.00 on Tuesday, February 4. On Friday, February 7, a permanent living memorial to the astronauts was dedicated at BHS. Seven mature olive trees, represent- ing the seven Challenger crew members, were planted in front of the gym, and a plaque was placed in the olive grove to commemorate the astronauts. More than 200 students, teachers, and administrators attended the memorial ceremony, which included music and words of sadness and encouragement from military, city, and school representatives. When the 30-minute service ended, seven balloons were released and floated skyward as the tearful crowd watched them disappear among the clouds. l Proud of their hard day's work, sophomore Ken Pinotti and senior David Garside wait with the rest of the tree-planting crew for the start of the memorial service. I As mourners face the American flag, Band Director Mr. Alan Lewis conducts The Star Spangled Banner. l Introducing the first speaker, Stu- dent Body President Jason Reed begins the memorial service. 278 Golden Pages
