Dear Bonhomme Richard Sailors and Marines In the snr months between our cloudy December departure and our triumphant June homeeommg, we changed the world for the better. We crossed through 27 time zones, operated off the coasts of four continents and participated in two major operations. Responding to the worst natural disaster in recorded history and operating near the epicenter of the earthquake that caused it, we showed great resolve and compassion, delivering more than 2.1 million pounds of humanitarian aid to the people of Indonesia. After saving lives and mitigating the suffering caused by the earthquake and tsunami, we set sail for the Arabian Gulf and played a critical role in Operation Iraqi Freedom. During our three months on station in the Gulf, we landed the Marines of the embarked l5th Marine Expeditionary Unit in Kuwait and they ultimately moved north to conduct security and stability operations in South Baghdad. With our Marines ashore, we conducted Maritime Security Operations in the Northem Arabian Gulf - protecting two vital Iraqi sea-based oil terminals that are providing the economic fuel for Iraqis fledging democracy. We also conducted Maritime Interdiction Operations and tracked suspicious shipping activity in the region to deny terrorists sanctuary at sea. You also demonstrated the power of an outstretched hand by welcoming Bahraini students aboard for a tour, helping special needs children in Dubai and hosting Australian dignitaries at a reception. Serving as your commanding officer on this deployment was a true of highlight of my 28 years in the Navy. You impressed me everyday and inspired me with your words and deeds. From delivering hope to tsunami survivors to securing freedom for the Iraqi people, one thing remained constant: the never surrender spirit of our Sailors and Marines. It is the same spirit that was voiced by John Paul Jones on the original Bonhomme Richard as her crew fought for the liberation of our country. It is the same spirit our brave men and women take into battle against the ruthless enemies we face today. And it is the same spirit that keeps us free today and helps to promote peace, Justice and freedom around the world.
