3, mE X V 35 - --'llixelll B! cm. nnvm MGCAMPBELL Captain David McCampbell, the ninth Commanding Officer of the Bon Homme Richard, assumed command February 5, 1959 at sea off the Philippine Coast. Captain McCampbell graduated from the Naval Academy in Iune, 1933. In April, 1938 he received his wings as a Naval Aviator at NAS Pensacola after serving as aircraft gunnery observer with Scouting Squadron 11 aboard the USS PORTLAND in a blackshoe billet. His first duty as an aviator was with Fighter Squadron 4 aboard the USS RANGER. During World War II he served on the USS WASP until she was lost at sea in enemy ac- tion in the South Pacific in September, 1942. For conspicuous gallantry, at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Commander Air Group 15, during combat against enemy Iapanese aerial forces in the battles of the Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf Captain McCampbell received the Congressional Medal of Honor, while embarked in the USS ESSEX. Duties since 1945 include: Chief of ,Staff to Commander Fleet Air, Quonset: Commander Ai! Groups, Hampton Roads: Intelligence Division of the Armed Forces Staff College: Naval Intelligence School, Anacostia: Senior Naval Aviator Advisor to the Argentine Navy: Executive Officer of the USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT: Plans Officer on the staff of Commander Air Forces, Atlantic Fleet: Commanding Officer Naval Air Technical Training Center, Jacksonville: Coordinator of Tests, Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River: Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans on the staff of Commander SIXTH Fleet: and Commanding 'Officer of the USS SEVERN. A Among his numerous awards Capt McCampbell holds the Navy Cross, Legion of Merit CEneii1'y'L Actionb, Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, and two Presidential Unit Citations.
