After long discussion it wat decided to call the new publication The Bruin. This name was the suggestion of Pin Dyer, who was awarded the tive-doHar gold pioce offerod by the annual staff, and the bo of stationery donated by the Standard Printing Company. Other names receiving favorable mention were The Bear and The Live Oak. Faced with the challenge of preserving school life the BRUIN fills an Important post. This is the BRUIN S golden anniversary, the book first being published in 1925 at the Bolton High School on Street. Prior to the BRUIN an annual edition of the school newspaper was put out at the end of the year. Nineteen seventy-five marks 50 years of change from the roaring 20 s through the Great Depression, World War II. and Exploration of the Moon. Through it all. 49 Bruins — 49 different Bruins reflecting life at Bolton High School and long hours of dedication by the Staffs. Washington. 171 BEAR OFFENSE PROVES POTENT WEAPON The offensive unit, rebuilding around the quarterback spot, displayed one of its most productive years. Junior Richard Starling took over the duties of quarterback, after the first game he established that Bolton had no problems with that position. For the regular season Starling completed over 60% of his passes for 1400 yards and I 3 touchdowns, an average of 140 yards passing per game. Mike Stewart netted over a thousand yards rushing for the second consecutive season, carrying the ball I 73 times for 1093 yards. Reed was the team's second leading rusher with 408 yards. The team total in rushing for the regular season was 1942 yards, which was an average of 195 yards a game. IMMOVABLE DEFENSE THROTTLES FOES The Bears were paced throughout the season by the pucan” defense that couldn’t be cracked. The starting unit allowed only three touchdowns to be scored upon them during the entire regular season, one of them a blocked punt downed at the Bolton one yard line for an easy opponent's score. Since moving down to the triple-A classification in 1973, the Bears have had a perfect regular season record of 20-0. and over the past three seasons maintained a 24 game unbeaten string. The Bears placed first in every meet they entered with the lone exception of the Viking Relays, in Lafayette, which gave Bolton stiff competition from Quad-A teams. Bolton s record included first place at the State meet, climaxing one of Bolton s finest seasons. Freshman Jerome Deal was District 3- AAA’s Outstanding Trackman, capturing the district and regional championship in the 100 yard dash, and placing second in the State meet. Along with Deal. Lurrell Fields. Mike Stewart, and Bobby Woods were members of the 440 yard State championship relay team. The foursome were district champions in the 880 yard relay. Stewart won first place at the State meet in the 180 yard low hurdles. Fields was regional winner in the long jump and in the triple jump and Greg Grimes finished first in the two mile run at the regional meet.
