Their first three games of the season ended up in ties, but the 19-19 deadlock with highly favored Baton Rouge High came as a stunning upset to sports scribes through- out the state, as the Bulldogs were ranked over the Bruins at 25-4 odds. In the scoring bracket the locals chalked up 190 points to their opponents' 167, which was a marked improvement over a 179 to 185 for 1948. The bears were only held scoreless once during the season and that was by a powerful Sulphur Tornado eleven, 25-0. Their worst defeat came at the hands of the class AA state Champs, Byrd High, 46-14, The Bruins were led by big captain and left halfback I. E. Schroll. I. E. ranked a close third in the state scoring department and was given a berth on the class AA All-State football team, likewise on the All-Southern aggregation, being one of five Louisiana players chosen for this honor. SchrolFs mates in the backfield included hefty Larry Robertson, Ted “Educated Toe” Bullock, fleet A. J. Cicardo, Sonny Pearce, Eddie Savoy, and Billy Huth- nancc. The line which paved the way for these fine backs was built up of Jerry Ward, who received Honorable Mention on the All-State team, Laverne Aymond, Co- Captain Ken Carstens, William Lee, William Cragon, Albert Lewis, L. E. Rvland, Larry Wiltse, Charles Liberto, Winn Morgan, and Gerry Mangham, along with re- serves Lamar JofTrion, Floyd Morgan, Earl Girlinghouse, and Pat Brenner. NEVILLE For the opening game of the season, the Bolton Bears journ- eyed to Monroe to meet the slightly underdogged Neville team. Since this was the first time either team had met another on the gridiron, both were a little slow getting started. The Bears outplayed Neville, but lost the ball close to the goal line several times on fumbles. The only tally was made by Billy Huthnance, who, after three downs, bulldozed his way through to score. Jerry Ward caught two touchdown passes from Schroll, and I. E. added 5 out of 6 extra points. Cicardo, Pearce, and Robertson also were out- standing for BHS and Fryer, Cayer, and Fant for the Eagles. BOLTON VS. BYRD Byrd High’s AA champions rolled the Bruins on a muddy Shreveport field in the last road game of the season, 46-14. Huthnance, King, and Cicardo along with some promising new- comers, Coach Raymond Schmolke expected to have one of the best high school “nines” in this section. The tentative schedule included about 20 games and arrangements were to be made with Lake Charles High, Byrd, Catholic High, Colfax, Olla. Menard, and Ouachita. 90 The Bolton Track team, under Coach Tom Southerland, was expected to have another suc- cessful season. Although a few mainstays of the ’49 squad were missing, returning lettermen Harper, Liberto, Garner, Bays, and Drott, along with many promising newcomers, were well on their way to Cinder path glory. Ill Book Room Staff Boosters The Book Room, open every period of the day, has an appointed staff to keep record files on each book, giving its number, the pupil to whom it was issued and condition of the book when issued. They issue, at the beginning of each semester, about 5,000 books to the students. The free paper and pencils that the state supplies to Bolton are distributed by the Book Room Staff. The Boosters have as their chief objective every year the support of all of Bolton’s activities. They have charge of selling football tickets out in town, take part in various civic projects, and boost the teams. Each year they sponsor the Homecoming Dance and a Spring Formal. This year the club merged with the 100-girl marching group. The old Booster organization be- came the business section, which handles all money and sells peanuts at all home football games. This has greatly increased the task of the members of the Cafeteria Stair and has brought on numerous changes in procedure. The patient stafT with the cooperation of several faculty members has succeeded in working out plans for efficiently handling the crowds so that all are served in record time. The place where Boltonitcs love to meet, eat and talk is the Canteen, which is run by an efficient stafT and sponsor. Within a brief ten minutes time, when it is open at recess, hundreds are served with utmost speed and courtesy. The canteen is also open before and after school and at the noon hour. The profits of this staff go to various school organizations as needed. This year the profits were given to help buy uniforms for the new marching Boosters. Some of the duties of this staff arc the preparation of charts and diagrams for class use, the securing of the materials not in the laboratory, and assisting in the upkeep of the labs and the supply rooms. The Debate Club meets every other week to hold exhibit debates and to teach new debators. Several times during every year this club travels out-of-town to compete in state wide tournaments. The Debate Club sponsors the Lyceum programs that are presented each year. They also stage a hilarious Mock Trial during the spring semesters. Entertainment is also on the agenda. Suppers, parties and teas were sponsored by the club at the Y. W. C. A. Heart, health, hand and head! These are the 4-H’s that the club works to develop. The purpose of the club is to encourage and pro- mote better living for rural youth and to develop leadership among boys and girls. The club participates in projects sponsored by the local, parish, and state clubs. These future farmers won a cup for first place on Parish Achievement Day and one member won a trip to Chicago for the best record in the state. Several won ribbons at Central Louisiana Fair. It was organized to encourage the study of the French traditions. In the club the word French is not thought of as just applying to the language but also to the study of the history, literature, customs, and habits of the French people. The Future Business Leaders of America was or- ganized this year to promote a better understanding between the young people of today and the business world. Its members visit business concerns in our town and other towns and each member is aided in discovering his own abilities. This year the club members gained valuable expe- rience at the Constitutional Convention at North- western State College and at the State Convention.
