Set, c ’■lexandria oCouiiiana To Mr. Richard Clanton, Treasurer of Bolton and teacher in the Commercial Department, the Senior Class dedicates this the 25th volume of Bruin. Mr. Clanton’s capable handling of the fifty-eight bank ac- counts of the various clubs and organizations, his outstanding teaching in the Commercial Department, his able sponsorship of the Treasury Staff, his willingness to aid the Boosters and all other groups in their undertakings, and his likeable, cheer- ful manner have done much to make the Spirit of Bolton what it is today. usually smiling ... ... seldom serious The driveway between buildings ‘n- x- vr - This is a picture story of Holton in the year 1947-48. It is a story of a typical American High School in the deep South. It is a sym- bol. along with other public schools, of all America stands for, and of all that America is. It is our hope that the opportunities and freedoms we have will even- tually spread to all the boys and girls of all the world wherever they may be. Win honor and win fame! In Mr. Smith’s one year’s service as Principal of Bolton High School, we have gained in many fields. He is fair, honest, and has a wonderful ability for leading youth. He has faithfully served Bolton for twenty-one years as a teacher, assistant principal, and now as Principal. Under his leadership many new things have been added to Bolton— among these are iced-water fountains on every floor, new curtains for the stage, a new art department, a public address system, a bus for the athletic department, and best of all, there is a continuance of a fine, wholesome school spirit. • MR. If you have then you’ve certainly seen at least two or three girls or boys working energetic- ally in there. Always, each period of the day, there is someone laboring, trying to bring Bruin a little closer to meeting its deadline. These hardworking staff members are continually at work, composing the writeups for the various organizations and staffs, drawing up the dummy, and completing the sets of tracings. Their tasks begin early in September and continue through the month of May. But they are repaid for their toil when the Bruin finally comes out, for then are heard the pleased exclamations of their classmates. 70 “Have you bought your Bruin yet?” When these familiar words are heard before school, during re- cess, lunch or after school, you know some loyal Business Staff member is on the job. These faithful ones are kept busy the greater part of the year, first selling picture contracts, urging all students to get their pictures made, arranging for club group pic- tures—then when photographic material is delivered, identifying and assorting all pictures before they can be sold or be turned over to the editorial staff. Add to this the securing of a tremendous lot of ads, plus the handling of Bruin sales campaigns, and last of all the distribution of books when they arrive from the printer. It adds up to a whale of a job that requires loyalty, leadership, initiative, and tremen- dous school spirit. Their aim is a better yearbook for a better school. ruin udineAA First Row: Betty Sue Funchess, Betty Dunn. Second Row: Wanda Ryan. Evelyn McOullen. (Cumtux Editorial “See about those class elections.” “Get a story on next week’s games.” Sounds queer? No, it’s just the Cumtux Editorial Staff getting it’s assignments for the next edition. Look at that feature story, or the write-up of the game closely. Probably you don’t realize what a lot of work goes into making up Cumtux. About twenty young journalists comprise the staff and they write anything from a sports preview to the gossip column. Just go by their office any afternoon and take a look at those hardworking folks who try to give you “a little bit of the best of every- thing”. 74 “Please, sir, would you like to have an ad put into the Cumtux?” Oh, it’s just a member of the Busi- ness Staff timidly trying to sell an ad to some local business man. These earnest workers are some of the most hardworking folks at Bolton. Most of us forget about school at 3:10, but the work doesn’t end so soon for these people, because they have to work outside of school hours getting the advertisements that finance the printing of Cumtux. Add to this the job of distributing and selling Cumtux to the student body, and you have a gigan- tic job. Yes, sir, you have these people to thank for making Cumtux a success. The first goal of every would-be Ethel or Lionel Barrymore at Bolton is admit- tance to the Dramatic Club. Admitted on the basis of tryouts, the members pre- sent several plays a year and enter nu- merous state tournaments. Another field of dramatics preferred by some is that of radio work. The Bolton Play- house presents one radio play each week, and enables participants to experience the close cooperation and split-second timing necessary for going “On the Air”. Other students prefer debating. They work hard, attend debate tournaments and are in the habit of bringing home many trophies. Membership in the National Thespian So- MISS RUTH LENNIE-SMITH Speech Director ciety is the ultimate aim of Bolton speech students. Membership is based solely on the number of points earned by participation in plays, radio programs, and other activities relative to the drama. But because of their extremely tough schedule and with very few re- turning lettermen, they, with none too spectacular a record, were chosen to play in the second annual Cosmopolitan Bowl. Comparing points, the Bears racked up 154 to their opponents’ 344, with John Daenen leading in the local scor- ing race. Of Daenen’s 40 points, 18 were extra points after touchdowns in which he specialized. Running a close second was halfback Ralph Lane with 36. End Sonny Pharis and W. A. Rush of the backfield scored 30 each, while David Lee Walker, star tosser for the Bruins, actually scored only 12, but his passes made quite a few tallies. Ray Fomby, the only second stringer to score, made one score for six points. Excluded from these figures are the results of the Cosmo game, in which the Bears played off a 0-0 tie that had taken place earlier in the season against Sul- phur. In this tilt David Lee Walker made a touchdown while John Daenen converted. The final score, however, was 7-2, since the Tornadoes had scored a safety. During their regular season the local squad surprised the fans with two spec- tacular upsets; in their second game of the season after barely edging class A Winnsboro, 13-12, they trounced fav- ored Baton Rouge High, 21-13. The other surprise came when they held last season’s North Louisiana champs of Haynesville to a 14-14 tie. First Row. left to right: Marvin Dean, manager, Eric McCarty. Walter Thomas. It was a surprising game with the A A Bruins favored over the Class A grid- ders, who were sparked by their half- back Billy Wiggins, the sole scorer. After Wiggins had tied things up with an 85-yard run, Ralph Lane with John Daenen’s conversion gave the Bears an edge that couldn’t be beat. BEARS VS. BATON ROUGE The 12 point favorites of Baton Rouge High bowed to the underdogs of Bolton, 21-13, after the Bears outplayed them throughout. Two of the tallies were made on interceptions; one when John Daenen took a Bulldog toss, and the other saw two linemen overwhelm the capitol city boys—Burt Broussard slapped an attempted pass out of the hands of the quarterback with Sonny Pharis taking it to paydirt. BEARS VS. FAIR PARK After outplaying the visiting Fair Park Indians in the initial period, the Bruin offense bogged down and the Red- skins won out 32-6. Lee Hedges sparked the victors’ drive with Charles Bates, Clinton Guin, and Bobby Davis also scoring. The lone Bruin tally was on a toss from David Lee Walker to John Daenen. Another aerial from Walker to Ralph Lane picked up 29 yards. • BEARS VS. OUACHITA Although the blue and white out- played the Ouachita Lions, they bowed to the tune of 19-7 after a scoreless first hall. It took a third period rally by both teams to begin the scoring. Ouachita scored thrice, once in the early part of the quarter on a 49-yard run. A fumble, however, gave time for the Bears’ pass- lateral play on which W. A. Rush scored. JENNINGS As the second place stale champs of '46 the Jennings Bulldogs overpowered the Bruins, 37-6, after the locals’ attack hogged down. In the first hall it looked like the Bears were going to surprise the specta- tors with another upset after they had tied the score. But this surprise was short-lived and the visitors began rack- ing up the points. One of the Bulldog scores was brought about by a fumble. BOLTON VS. MENARD Renewing a long-forgotten grid rival- ry, the Bruins slaughtered the Menard Eagles. 45-6, for the city championship. Outplaying this class A school, Coach Anastasio’s boys exhibited top ball car- rying and many spectacular gains were made by David Lee Walker’s passes to Sonny Pharis. In the ground depart- ment John Daenen showed up on the line plunges with Ralph Lane and W. A. Rush excelling on end runs. BEARS VS. BYRD In one of their worst seasons, Byrd High School in Shreveport tried in vain to record their first win of the year against the Bears, who shutout the Yel- low Jackets, 28-0. Throughout the till it looked like a one-sided affair in which the visiting Bruins scored almost at will. John Dae- nen, four-year letterman and extra-point hooter, completed all the conversions. BEARS VS. ISTROUMA Halloween night saw the Bruins sul fer a terrific defeat at the hands of the Istrouma Indians and their spark-plug Jim Roshto who ran his season's total as state number one scorer to 120 points. It looked like a review of last year when the Redskins trounced the Bruins 48-0, but this time they bettered them- selves one point with a final tally of 49-0. ii ofton J)ilrounn Ralph Lane runs kick-off punt BEARS VS. HAYNESVILLE l ed Bullock sparked the Bears’ 14-14 tie against favored Haynesville with his superb kicking that kept the Golden Tornadoes in the shadow of their own goal during most of the game. A lighter Bolton team made two dra- matic goal line stands while the Torna- does pounded away four downs to no avail. Both touchdowns were made by end Sonny Pharis while John Daenen made the tell-tale conversions. BEARS VS. LAKE CHARLES As a 13-point underdog the blue and white took a 44-14 defeat by the Lake Charles Wildcats, who went into the State AA finals. During most of the game it looked like the winners would score a shutout, but a last minute rally by the Bruins scored 14 points and succeeded in outplaying their opponents in the final frame. SULPHUR In iheir homecoming tilt the Bruins battled back and forth with the Sulphur Golden Tornadoes in a sea of mud to a scoreless deadlock. The threats were equal; the Torna- does managed to reach the blue-white two-yard line and had four downs to go for a touchdown, but the determined line held. The locals also made it to the opposing five-yard line, but the whistle sounded for the half. Due to the inclement weather the crowning of the homecoming queen and court was postponed until the following week. (J3adLetbally 194-8 VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM First Row: Donald Svehek. Sev- eral of his outstanding basketballers were out for football and it appeared as if they would have to stay in practice until the big game on the gridiron. Nevertheless, those athletes involved began coming in to night practice after football prepping was over. Although thus hampered, the cagers have started a season that compared with their coach’s past record of at least 80% wins a season. However, things brightened up considerably when Hans Leis, new ath- letic mentor, offered his services at this position. Although no definite information con- cerning the schedule was available when Bruin went to press, every afternoon the tennis courts were buzzing with activity as all potential courtsters practiced for their season. Competition for position on the teams ladder were held in two divisions —boys and girls. Membership in this club is considered a great honor, for these girls of the lower terms are carefully chosen for their scholastic rating and for good citizenship. Their motto is “to be happy and to help other people to be happy by spreading good cheer . This year one of their main projects has been the redecorating of the girls’ sick room. Han It’s the Half! The drums start off in their steady beat! Sixteen girls in their shiny braid- ed white uniforms snap to attention! Then they march onto the field following the band to help them with their formations. Smell like Mom’s cooking? That’s that meal all those potential track stars tear for every day at 12:05. The cafeteria staff has really outdone itself this year in fixing meals that can’t be beat. Infla- tion proved to be a tough obstacle, but every- one admits that Mrs. Hickman and her help- ers have certainly done a swell job. • (JSoodterA The Boosters are one of the hardest work- ing service clubs at Bolton. At the beginning of each year they sell football season tickets, and at the games they have charge of the pea- nut concessions. Once a year, at the home- coming game, they march with the band at the half, and they help numerous civic or- ganizations in their activities. DL Rush! Rush! Rush! The canteen staff works before school, at recess, and noon and they’ve developed amazing speed and skill. They serve hundreds every day. There are always more pupils coming, all shouting or- ders into the canteen at the same time. But the staff doesn’t mind; they know that all the profit they make goes toward the betterment of the school. Such school spirit is seldom equaled, so here is a salute to the Bolton Can- teen Staff. Throughout the year it is ever-active with various projects, such as handling concessions at the annual horse show, sponsoring a for- mal dance after the Bolton-Menard game, and repainting the cafeteria. “This book is two days overdue”—familiar words in the library. This staff has the task of keeping the books and magazines in their proper places, changing the newspapers in the racks each day, and checking books in and out. In general, they work hard trying to make things easier for the students when they use the library. Scholarship, leadership, character, and a good, all-round personality are necessary qualifications, and these re- quirements must be met by all members. Membership in this society is one of the high- est honors at Bolton. Qidi The desire of every Junior girl is to be elected a delegate to Pelican Girls’ State which is held each summer at our capitol city. These girls chosen for their leadership, character, and scholarship, are benefited in numerous ways by their attendance at Girls’ State for by actual participation in imaginary state, parish, and local governments they are taught the fundamentals of good citizenship and the meaning of democracy. Bolton made a wonderful showing at Peli- can State this year, for besides gaining nu- merous smaller honors and awards, Ethma Fwing was elected Lt.-Gov.; Jo Anne Tram- mell, most talented girl; and Frankie Staf- ford, most outstanding Senator. Oft to Pelican State! For these now Senior boys one of their most cherished desires is about to be iulfdled. A week of hard work in preparation for a session of the Legislature, or a Parish election, mixed with good, whole- some fun, sends the delegates back home chocked full of the knowledge of the inner working of democracy where it begins in our local governments. Participation in self-gov- ernment prepares the future leaders of Lou- isiana lor a new tomorrow. The members of the Press Club, selected for their outstanding work on Bruin or Gum- tux, are responsible for the “Bolton High Notes” appearing five times a week in the Alexandria daily paper.
