Z Www CLASSES After four years at Bolton the Seniors feel as if they own the place . . . and they almost do, for from the Senior class come the leaders in all school activities. Looking back at their high school lives, they remember all the dances, the elections that held everyone in suspense, the campus beauties roaming around, and the many other things that add to the fun of four years at Bolton. These boys and girls have made themselves famous in the debating and the music worlds, in a scholastic and also in an all-round way. When they leave us, we will miss them terribly, but they have to go and make a place for themselves in the outside world. We wish luck and success to our class of I944. Now we come to the Juniors, who are by now seasoned students in their third happy year at Bolton. Since they have neither the vim, vigor, nor vitality of the Freshmen, nor the pompous dignity of the Seniors, they are a happy combination of both, Their scholastic and athletic achievements have left nothing to be desired. Besides contributing their brains and brawn to school work, they have been right in there pitching in the school's war effort. Now, as they are nearing the end of their third year, soon to take the places of the Seniors, the Juniors are realizing their responsibilities and getting ready to take their places as dignified Seniors. The Sophomores, at last in their second year in Bolton, thought they would never get out of the ignorant days as Freshies. They no longer buy elevator tickets or shudder when they come face to face with those horrible teachers. They have finally gotten wise to the pranks of the Juniors and Seniors and can at last play those same pranks on the lowly Freshman who will arrive in due time. They have accomplished much in their first and second years at Bolton and are very proud of their class officers. With two years ahead of them, they expect to live up to and exceed the reputations of the other classes which have gone before. The Freshmen's first days at Bolton are hilarious ones. They are all ex- cited because they know what is in store for them. They find themselves dashing around corners and rushing through halls dodging those terrible Sophomores. lt is all in fun, though, and they don't mind it so terribly much. They have loads of fun trying to recognize their friends under the layers of lipstick and shoe polish. For a while they roam through this immense build- ing wondering if they'll ever get used to it. Now that they have gotten over the leap from grammar school to high school, they are beginning to think of all the fun and honors in store for them during their High School Life. Our Campus Queen and Favorites for l944. Minnie, our cute, blonde, blue-eyed, Campus Queen, deserves the posi- tion to which the student body elected her and is truly Bolton's favorite of favorites. Minnie, a Junior this year, captured the hearts of Bolton the minute she arrived. Her freshman year she was elected secretary of her class and Best All-Round Freshman. Since then she has belonged to many clubs at Bolton. She was a favorite in last year's Bruin and is a very popular cheer- leader this year. All of these things go to make her Bolton's best-loved girl. The runner-up, Sister, a cute curly-haired coquette, has been cheer- leader for the past three years and was elected head cheerleader this year. This is Sister's second appearance as a favorite. Shirley, our vivacious blonde sophomore, is the favorite of the underclassmen. She has been outstanding in debating ever since she came to Bolton and was a very popular cheerleader this year. Ann, dark-haired beauty of the senior class, is well-known by all. This is the second year she has been named favorite. Ann was also elected president of the Senior Class of '44. Gloria, a pert, pretty Junior who with her brown eyes has entranced us, is the enthusiastic president of the Junior Red Cross at Bolton. Nancy, charm and personality personified, is the pride of the Irish. This cute, blue-eyed senior is one of the best-known an best-liked of her class. Next comes Mary Love, the green-eyed senior whom everyone loves. Her gay charm earns a place for her among Bolton's favorites. Betty, a very popular senior now appears on the scene. She has captivated everybody during her four years at Bolton. Last, but not least, is blue-eyed Bonnie, whose name describes her perfectly. She is a sweet, gay, and charming lass liked by all. Need we say more? There they are, everyone of them well-known and loved by the student body. Minnie, Sister , Hickye , Ann-, Gloria, Nancy, Lovey , Betty, and Bonnie make up a group that cannot be equaled. Gordon C. Lester, in his role as coach for the third year at Bolton, produced a rough bunch of youngsters who ended the season with a brace of wins and seven COACH GORDON C. LESTER losses. Bolton was handicapped by age, weight and experience, Lester building the squad around only two returning lettermen. This fall, however, things will look brighter than usual, and with several positions ironed out, Bolton should have one of the best football seasons in manya year. At least ten lettermen are expected back. By use of excerpts from Cumtux, Bolton newspaper, we glance at the record which the i943 team chalkesl up. Bolton versus Baton Rouge, Sep- tember 24. TENNIS TEAM One of Bolton's leading athletic activities is the tennis team, coached by the new gym teacher, Miss Ann McClellan. Tennis has become a popular sport with the boys and girls of Bolton High. ' Due to the rationing of gas, the team has been unable to make many out-of-town games this year. At those games they have attended, they have made a good showing, not only in skill but also in sportsmanship. Since these boys and girls have worked hard they deserve praise for their outstanding ability and good sportsmanship in tennis. They have, in past years, brought fame to Bolton and will in the future. COACH ANN MC CLELLAN QJXVE , fi and i3AsicETBAi,i,, ff Qgffjfk Ky BASKETBALL TEAM Lett to Right: Scott Brame, Mack Page, Bobby Bentley, Mike Flynn, Graves Holloway, Coach Marler, Sonny Mathews, Charles McNutt, Robert Taylor, Jack Cappel. With the usual good offensive attack, the l944 basketball team, strengthened consi- derably by shrewd defensive men, lost only one game and that to the Bunkie basketeers early in the season, Bruin went to press too early to get results of the Natchitoches tourney and also the Central Louisiana cage rally, but Coach Leo Marler had high hopes that Bol- ton would cop the Central and thus qualify to enter the State rally at Baton Rouge. As the Bears entered the Natchitoches tourney at State Normal during the week of February l2- l3, they drew a bye. Meanwhile, the team was looking over its three rivals for honors- Lake Charles, Baton Rouge and a threatening team from Marthaville. On February lB, Bol- ton met Simpson at the Bolton home grounds, and won by a large margin, On March l, the locals were to play oft a postponement with either Bunkie or Natchitoches, Coach Mar- ler said. Bolton won eight scheduled games-Natchitoches, a team composed of Bolton's alumni, Esler Field, Simpson, Winnfield twice, the Air Base Medics and the Livingston Engineers. During the Cub season, the Bruins edged out two victories from Oakhill and 3 COACH LEO MARLER BASKETBALL CUB BASKETBALL TEAM Left to Right: Billie Roberts, Vallery Pharis, Charles Blalock, Cecil Calwell, Sam Hay, Ambrose Vercher. another brace of wins from Forest Hill. Six-foot, five-inch Graves Holloway was the star of the year. Coach Marler said that Holloway was the best first-year player he had ever trained and that the lanky center would show even greater abilities during the '45 season. He was high scorer for the year, close-followed by forward Buster Lowther. Lowther, a senior, earned his third varsity cage letter. He was also team captain. Besides Lowther, the Bruins will lose only one man by graduation, he being Bobby Drouet, second string center. First team men Robert Taylor, Jack Cappell and Charles Price, as well as Holloway, will be the nucelus of the '45 squad. Mack Page, who was going to hold down a first team guard post, was called to the service in mid-season and his position was taken alternately by Scott Brame, Bert Mathews and Price. Other cagers starring in varsity ball included Bobby Broussard, Charles McNutt, Bill Roberts, Bobby Bentley, Hewitt Barmore, Joe Morgan and Mike Flynn, all of whom have at least another year at Bolton in which to play basketball. The Freshman cage squad also had a good year, winning seven games and losing one. They smeared Menard thrice, Bush Avenue twice, West End once and Hi-Y Trojans once, only to suffer defeat in a second contest with the Trojans. The Freshmen were sparkled by outstanding playing of Malcolm Waters, Huey Vinson, Vallery Pharis and others. Most of the freshman team will graduate to varsity ball and others will play Cub ball next season. TBHCK During the l943 track season, the Bears entered only one meet, the Normal relays at Natchitoches, May 8, and winning second place, only two points behind the victorious Winnfield cindermen. The Bruins made five first places, nine seconds and one third. Leon Hogg copped two first places for Bolton, in the javelin and the l2O high hurdles. Jimmy Bowden won first place in the discus. Packie McFarland earned recognition in the high jump as did Buster Lowther in the pole vault. Track Coach Gordon Lester announced the lettermen as Hogg, Bowden, McFarland, Lowther, Johnny Barnes, Paul Spera, Ambrose Vercher and Ronald Barron. Hopes for the l944 season are bright, according to Coach Lester. He expects a better-than-average team, but it is doubtful whether the team will enter any meets. BOLTON ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION OFFICERS BOLTON ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Beginning its fourth year of existence, the Bolton Athletic Association, whose fundamental purpose is to further school spirit toward all sports, got under way shortly after school began in the fall by electing its president, vice-president and secretary, its six cheerleaders and starting its drive for membership. BAA tickets were is- sued to all students belonging to the association and the tickets admitted the bearers to all foot- ball, basketball, tennis and track contests held on the home field. Besides trying to further school spirit in all the sports, another purpose of the BAA is to encourage sportsmanship in the student body as well as in the team, A great deal of credit for the BAA success in the past year is due to the hard work of both its officers and its faculty sponsor. With the spirit invoked by the BAA, athletic success at Bolton will surely pre- vail in the years to come. Tommy Lacour, President Graves Holloway, Vice President Sister Jordan, Secretary CHEERLEADERS School spirit and enthusiasm for the home team should always be pre- valent in athletic contests, especially football contests, for without this spirit, the team's determination to win would decline probably fifty or more per cent. During the i943-44 year, spirit and pep for the Bolton teams was in high standards, and part of this was due to the untiring efforts of the cheerleaders for producing the spirit by leading the cheers and yells of the team followers. Six cheerleaders are elected each year by the members ofthe Bolton Athletic Association. Last year tryouts for cheerleaders were held. The BAA member- ship then voted upon the tryouts and the six cheerleaders, as the result, were named. On the Thursday night before each home games, ci bonfire, given by the cheerleaders, was held, with many of the Bolton supporters attending and joining the cheerleaders in yelling the Bears to victory. CHEERLEADERS L to Right: Buster Brumlow, Minnie O'Shee, Buster Lowther, Sister Jordan, Roy Bradford, Shirley l-licknian This year the girls' athletic department came under a new head, Miss Ann McClelland, the new gym teacher. She has revived the girls' enthusiasm for various sports and has introduced as something new, calisthenics and folk dances into the gym curriculum. Besides this the girls in their vacant periods play basketball, tennis, ping pong, softball, badminton, and other similar sports. A group of girls demonstrated the folk dances which they had learned on an assembly program. The girls have responded enthusias- tically to Miss McClelland's new ideas and have greatly enjoyed the games they play. Among Bolton's girls there are many excellent tennis players who have competed in and won places in matches with players from other parts ot the state. Tennis is the most outstanding girls' sport at Bolton. Miss McClellan has done a great deal of good work in this field and is to be highly com- mended tor it. GIRLS' ATHLETICS , A nm Q 'gy' .. The Concert Band, fully titled the Symphonic Concert Bond, contains many instruments of the symphony orchestra. Under the very able direction of Mr. R. C. Gilmore, music director, the band this year has a new and distinctive tone, unlike both the symphony and the old-type military band. lt has been concerned mainly with the playing of modern American music written by the best ot the young modernists, for the comparatively new voice , The Sym- phonic Band. This group is very active both at Bolton and outside of Bolton. Not only does the band play on the assemblies at school but it also appears at the nearby U.S.O.'s and the surrounding army camps. This is a patriotic substitute for the pre-war Band Contest. The Concert Band, whose good standard is being raised each year, is composed of a highly selective group whose membership is ac- cepted on a try-out basis, and is retained only by keeping up a high standard of performance. s QQ 2 4 iii , 1 nf Wg 1 3,521 .Q ., .J H: , ., ,, ,. , N , A aw, wap, . , . . NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Beta Tau Sigma, Bolton's chapter of the National Honor Society, plays an important part in the activities at Bolton. Its members are the most outstanding students in service, character, scholarship, and leadership. It is an honor to be on this staff. Bolton's library is arranged like all public and up-to-date libraries, and consists of approximately twelve-thousand books. Each year these carefully-selected books play a more important part of scholastic life at Bolton. The library staff is to be commended on its good work and its contribution to the school. BLUE TRIANGLE The Blue Triangle devotes most ot its time to promoting better conditions at Bolton. This year the club staged a politeness campaign which proved very successful. Posters were hung on bulletin boards, in classrooms and in the cafeteria. Love, Live, and Labor form the three divisions into which the organization is divided. These divisions work together as pro- gram committees. With Miss Thornton and Miss Milldrum as sponsors ot this honorary club, one of the three character clubs ot Bolton is formed. The membership ot this club is composed of a group of hard-working, intelligent boys who are selected by the members of this club for their qualities of leadership and character. Mr. Shelton Davis, faculty sponsor, has helped the boys to live up to their ideals of clean speech, clean living, and athletics. This club has really helped to improve the standards of both its members and the whole school. SENIOR FORENSIC SOCIETY This year the Senior Forensic Society has been forced to streamline its program to meet war-time restrictions. The emphasis this year was on an inter-school program. Members of this club formed the nucleus about which the whole school revolved in studying the ques- tion of Post-War International Organizations. Open discussions were held by the different departments in the museum to discuss this question. Possible debate forums at Natchitoches, New Orleans, and Dallas will be the main highlights of the year outside Bolton. Local tournaments, Lyceum numbers, radio programs, speeches before Alexandria's Civic Clubs, and Mock Trial will be features of the home program. The members have also participated in the inter-school debates which were planned to take the place of the out-of-town tournaments they would have attended in former years. With the supervision of both Mr. McKay and Miss Cheves these debators hage gained much experience this year to advance them to their goal of becoming senior de ators. JUNIOR RED CROSS ln the two years that Bolton has had a Junior Red Cross Chapter much has been done towarcl helping the war effort. Representatives are elected from each home room at the be- ginning of each term. These representatives in return urged their home rooms to cut out cartoons to be pasted in scrap books, to bring book-length novels, pot plants, and urged students at Christmas to bring presents to be distributed among convalesing soldiers in near- by camps. Under the supervision of Mrs. Lena Moore this chapter, with the earnest coopera- tion of the student body and the faculty, has helped in a big way in making Bolton's Chap- ter of the Junior Red Cross a great success. -JK V' JUNIOR RED CROSS Outside L. to R.: Charles McNutt, Daniel Lemoine, Martha McFarland, Mary Lou Hines, Frances Beason, Bob- by Casale, LaVerne Miller, Slyvian Ray, Joyce Kelly, Betty Lee Seff, Pat Whitman, Essie Gabbert, Charles Kloor, Jimmy Lashly, Joseph Belgard, Charles Saggus. The counciI's program consists of keeping the halls, class rooms, campus, and driveway clean. ln its program for keeping the school cleaner Miss Cambre and the Safety Council have accomplished a great deal. The Safety Council is one of the most efficient organizations in the school and while it carries out its work deserves the full cooperation of both the stu- dent-body and the faculty. SCRAP PAPER CLUB This energetic group of boys and girls, formed and guided by Miss Mable Hawthorn, has done a splendid job in the collection of the much-needed salvaged paper. The mem- bers of this club are elected as representatives from each home room. They collected the scrap paper from their home rooms, private homes, and typing rooms. They have even gone out in trucks and cars on Saturdays to collect paper. These waste fats help turn out the ammunition that our boys need on all the battlefronts of the world. The members of this club are elect- ed in each home room. They conduct house-to-house campaigns. The homerooms that go one-hundred per cent have their names placecl on a plaque under the bomb presented to Bolton by the Alexandria Air Field. This salvage group, under the direction of Miss Liev- ens, should be given credit for helping Bolton do her part in this war. TREASURY STAFF The Treasury Staff, center of the school's finance, is in charge of the money of all the clubs, and organizations at Bolton. Several students, selected from the advance commerce classes, under the direction of Mr. Richard Clanton, are assigned certain parts ofthe work. The faculty and the student body have long ago discovered the importance of the Treasury Staff. Not only do they need them when the club want a quick report of their financial standing, but to keep in balance all their receipts and payments during the entire year. The Treasury Staff deserves praise for the splendid work and cooperation they have given Bolton throughout the year. OFFICE STAFF Late to class? Forty minutes! Report after school. These privileged people can give demerits, excuses, KIR, and even admits if you need them. Do you think that's fun? Well, maybe it is, but this staff makes up for it by working over credits, typing announcements, checking absentees, and doing many other d.ities. One or two of the staff work in Mrs. Lieven's office and in Mr. Smith's office only at Home Room period and the first period. The members are chosen with the utmost care, as they have to be capable and efficient to be able to keep school records straight. These students have a most responsible position and they do their job well. THE CAFETERIA STAFF Friends meet to eat, where? That's right, the Cafeteria. Could you think of any place better? The Cafeteria is open at recess where sandwiches, doughnuts and ice cream can be obtained and a little gossip on the side. The Cafeteria is open at noon also for the bene- fit of students and teachers who are unable to go home. Through Mrs. Hickman, the dieti- tion, and the help of the staff, hot, well-balawced meals are always prepared in the best manner. For the services rendered by this staff they receive daily their noon-day meal. The students of Bolton appreciate highly the work and loyalty of the Cafeteria Staff. Because of the short- age of cakes and candy, the canteen sees that it is rationed out to last through the week. Mr. Rodgers is supervisor and the work of the boys on the Staff is entirely voluntary. Each boys receives a pit for a years' service. For the convenience of the student body an faculty it is open before school, at recess, and during the noon hour. Most of the profit made by the Canteen goes to buying war bonds. RADIO CLUB The radio club was organized this year for those students in Bolton interested in tak- ing an active part in Radio Presentations. Ea:h week this group, under the capable super- vision of Miss Drake, presents The Bolton Bandwagon, a dramatization, over radio sta- tion KALB every Tuesday afternoon. These programs are devoted to the presentation of radio dramas. Once each month the program is sponsored by a different department in school. These programs show the work of ea:h department. Through this medium pupils interested in radio dramatics are given an opportunity to show their ability and at the same time gain practical radio experience. Under the helpful direction of Miss Drake, members of this club have displayed their abilities in the community, and at the U.S.O. centers in various performances. This year the club has worked as a dramatic-appreciation group. Members get practical experience by producing plays, being auditioned at the local radio station, and taking part on the weekly programs. No club in Bolton offers a better oppor- tunity to those interested in the various fields of dramatics. MOVIE CLUB When a few boys this year thought that Bolton needed motion picture publicity, they got together and under the guidance of Mr. Richard Clanton formed the Movie Club. Start- ing from scratch, they filmed several movies, some featuring Bolton's social life and others featuring plots of adventure in India and other foreign countries. The expense of the mov- ies at first came out of the members' pockets, then they began to make the club pay by having regular shows on Friday at vacant periods and after school. At these shows they projected the movies that they had filmed and also popular pictures with Hollywood stars that they had rented. -1 'I Movie? 4' K lst row L. to R.: Sam Antony, Sam- mie Poole, Z. However, the homemaker's activities are not all work. The meetings are planned on a definite pat- tern devoted to business, group singing, a program, and a social, where conversation varies from black markets and ration points to the latest styles and colors.
