This time worn phrase coined by the Old Maestro, Ben Bernie, just seems to fit in exactly. We seniors can't realize that we've been in Bolton four years and that very soon we will be using this expressive way of saying good-bye ,to high school forever. Four years ago we seniors were a group of frightened, immature, disor- ganized freshmen. Today we stand ready to face life as life is and feel that we shall be able to find our places in the desirable way of life. As in the past, it has been the seniors' lot to take the initiative in many instances. We gladly worked overtime to write prize-winning Biggest News, we willingly spent hours in the library writing history articles, we helped fresh- men find their classes, we worked cooperatively to make the '39 class the best senior class of Bolton High. By supporting Cumtux, Bruin, the football team, the activity plan, and the basketball team, by going to rally with the determination and energy which automatically claimed recognition, the seniors gained top honors. But don't think that we have no fun in us--we're fond of good times, too. Remember the time when the halls were filled with smoke and the paper chute was burninggwelll-gossip has it that it was a senior who was the guilty person, and when some young gentleman's face was quite red when he stood alone on the campus minus an important part of his wearing apparel, and when, on those several days at activity period the east study hall was filled with seniors who had been planning to elect a class president. We lost no time in not doing it. Laying all joking aside, the '39 clcss is destined for unusual fame and Qrosperity. lt is written in the stars that we shall bring honor to our future alma mater. Here's hoping the writing in the stars is authentic. We propose a toast to the Senior Class of Bolton High School: i To these who have attained success We wish more joy and happiness To bring to them a greater fame And to add glory to Bolton's name. The First Day-new facesfthey get smaller every year. There were some new teachers, too. Some of them old Boltonites. Soon peppy new cheerleaders were elected. They began their cheering at the first game of the season. The colorful new uniforms of the enlarged bandihow could we forget them. The day college freshmen overran the school made us high school seniors take a longingly lingering look at the familiar corridors, The mad rush for the Sunday paper to see if Bolton placed in the Times-Picayune Biggest News Contest. When our faces turned crimson because the juniors bought more Curntux subscriptions than the seniors. l-low the seniors had such a tough time getting class officers elected. Everyone accusing the other fellow of stuffing the ballot boxes. The day Miss Bolton l-li was elected in a secret vote, and lnow each of us tried to find out who had been chosen. The day the third floor was filled' with smoke anal we all said we wished the place would burn down, but nevertheless, all breathed a sigh of relief when it was put out. The game with Ouachita- the last game we saw as a pupil of clear ole Bolton. Seeing the delegates to Indianapolis off to represent our home town at the press convention. How much we all enjoyed the trip to Baton Rouge to play lstrou-na, even if the game was called off. The fight the horne- rooms put on to outshine each other at buying Bruin subscriptions. And how Mr, Rodgers' and Mr. Miller's boys homerooms went one hundred per cent, Everyone was glad when the day arrived to select senior rings. Wasn't C a beauty? The class showed good taste in picking it out of all those pretty ones. Time came for the annual B Club dance. lt was a wow and we'll all remember it. Many an eye was filled with a misty look as the mid-term seniors departed. But with the coming of carnival there were no tears. All was happiness and gaiety. The prettiest carnival in the history of the school. And were those seniors proud? You betf Easter comes and college friends come home. And then!! There isn't a one of us who'll forget very soon strolling up the aisle with our best girl or our best beaux. We all sigh as we leave with words that say one thing but mean another. For instance, one can hear, Boyl Am I glad to get out of that place! but underneath the words there is a dull ache in the heart of each senior as it finally downs on us that we are looking at Bolton for the last time, as if we own a part of it. And so, to all you seniors who are leaving us, good luck, and be sure to como back to see the halls where you so often strolled. 4455 --lp- JUNIORS Why we are juniors was the cry most heard from these students as study routine first began in the school year of '39. For as a stream suddenly becomes broader, deeper, and finally mightier, so have these students become broader in viewpoint and mightier in mentality. Though they have often been stranded on the rocky road to failure, they have braved all the bumps dnd are at last upperclassmenl! Even though they have reached such a desired height, they are still toiling upward. Play- ing pranks at the freshies' expense and stirring up the campus with those frightened little chickens merely indicate their good nature. That air of superiority is not superiority at all, but only something acquired during two full years at Bolton and the realization that they are not seniors who must graduate or lower classmen who must still take the bumps. lf they skipped class, had to cram for exams or did other such unorthodox things, remember that they became juniors after all and that is the thing that counts. And just look at their accomplishments. To the seniors they have given honor. To the lower classmen they have indeed been both condescending and helpful. The faculty has had their full submission, obedience, and respect. They have set the pace for other classes in scholastic work and in supporting Eolton herself, Through all these pursuits they have successfully adapted themselves to any new situation which might be presented, So as their ambitions as juniors are fulfilled and they realize that this joyous year must come to an end and pass on into the pages of Bolton history, their ambitions for a better and greater year arise. Soon they will be our seniors, our members of the Hall of Fame and our editors. With their junior year such a crowning glory they aim to complete their high school careers with as much success as they have done in the first years and show Bolton that the class of '39 has nothing on the class of '-40. 4465 MARGARET CARLINO MARY CIZEK LILLIAN CLOSE EDITH COLE ANITA COOLEY LEE OTIS DAMMON EARL DANAHY LEONARD DARCY JULIENNE DAVID WILLIE MYRLE DAVIS EARL DENNING, JR. We think a lot of ourselves, but can you think of any reason why we shouldn't? After all, we have lived two years of the hurly-burly life of Bolton. We entered frightened, immature, disorganized. Now we know better than to jump at chance to buy an elevator ticket, we know how to get by with endless pranks, we no longer shake in our boots at the sight of Mr, Brameg we know just about everything that is to be known and most important of all, we can gloat mercilessly over the timid freshmen that we once were. We are-at last-important! We really have a lot to our credit. Several of our class members tried out for and entered the State Rally at Baton Rouge. We have many good debaters, some of them have even been promoted to the Senior Debating Club. We remember seeing the names of a few ot our fellow classmates in the honorable mention list in the Times-Picayune Biggest News Contest. This is considered outstanding, because sophomores are not compelled to enter this contest. We have also participated in athletics and other extra curricula activities. We supported the Activity Plan, Cumtux, and the Bruin. Sophomores have a lot more school spirit than some of the other classes. Don't jump to the conclusion that all of this has gone to our heads, however, for it hasn't. We only want you to realize when you see us that we are sophomores. The class is certain that they will keep up the good work and continue to show everyone that they should be proud of the sophies. May the class of '41 soon step to the pinnacle of Bolton fame. 4 54 P A43 l The ophomore 1 Spring J LOYD BELL President AVICE FLYN N Secretary BOBBY LOWTH ER Vice-President OFFICERS CARLTON LOWRY Vice-President lFaIIb RHODES VAWTER President TOM TURREGANO Secretary ,,, W T, AQ... f 1 4.4 GLORIA AERTKER CATHERINE ALEXANDER CORA ALEXANDER ANN ALLISON ARIEL ALSUP BILLY AMRHEIN NAOMIE ATKINS FRANCIS BAKER HARRY BAKER DIXIE LEE BALL WALTER BALL LUCILLE BARKER ELLA BARNES BRUNNY BARRON CAROLYN BARRON CHARLES BARRON LOUIS BASTOE JACKIE BAYS ALLEN BEAUBOEUF MARY ELIZABETH BEAGLE CHARLES BEASON LOYD BELL MIRIAM BEJSOVEC JOHN BLANCHARD MARGARET BOWDON ELISE BRADFORD PAULINE BRENNON LOUISE BRIDENDALL ANNELL BRIDGES MONTEZ BRISTER JAMES BROADWELL RANDOLPH BROUSSARD MAXINE BROWN SAM CALHOUN CATHERINE CAMPBELL DORIS CARLINO IVY MAR I E CARNAHAN RUTH CARROLL BEVERLY CARROLL SADIE CAPPEL ODDIE CASSELL TRAVIS CHADDICK SIDNEY CHICOLA LESLIE CHURMA ALFORD CLARK AVA CLAVERIE MILDRED COCO BETTY COLLINS MARJORIE COLEMAN ROY COOKSTON TOXAMYE COOLEY JEAN COOPER MLJRLINE COOPER YVONNE COUVILLION WILLIAM CUTTER JOHN DANAHY WARREN DARICEK VIRGINIA DAVIS BRYANT DEAN MARY CATHERINE DEAR MARION DEAR BETTY DEAVERS PURSER DEAVERS BERTHA DeHAAN LETHA DESHANTEL EDITH DOBBS FRANCIS DOBBS DORIS DOUZA JOE DROUET ROBERT DROUET E R D N ELLIS JOHN ESKEW ALDEN LEE EVANS JAMES EWING BETTY EZELL MINNIE RAE FAUST GLADYS FEAUQUA AVICE FLYNN I I L..- 4585 , , I III! But, alas, what a hard task it was. When in September this invading army entered the lofty portals of learning, with quaking hearts, they encountered the same reception that has been accorded freshmen for decades. Even the lowly sophomore forgets that he too was just as humble when he first trod those stairs that lead to higher learning. Despite their contempt, however, these upperclassmen quickly overcome their prejudice and after the initiatory rites are often seen lending a helping hand to the very same students to whom they had previously sold an elevator ticket or sent to the office on some imaginary mission, In no time these newcomers are mastering the mysteries of science, algebra or arithmetic, and the King's English which seven years of grammar school have failed to print indelibly on their minds, and we are sorry to state, their tongues. Clubs and various school activities do their part in creating a school spirit which finds one of its best outlets on the football field. Future football heroes pant their weary way around the track, mile after mile, determined to develop their muscles. Drama in its every form is represented when these freshmen try out for the Dramatic Club. Each student turns naturally toward the subject in which he is most interested and in a few months teachers are able to discuss potential rally material in the ranks of newer pupils. For the most outstanding boys and girls who have done better than average school work Bolton offers the Bluebirds and Junior Hi-Y. Also in the Junior Debating Club many young freshmen have shown great work. No doubt in their junior and senior years these same freshmen will be the best de- baters and will boost Bolton to first place in debating tournaments of the future. Every year the freshmen can distinctly be divided into three classes, those freshmen who study to pass and in four years get out of school, those who really want to make something of themselves and study hard to achieve this goal, and those who come over to Bolton to have fun. The latter take Bolton by storm and every day fill the halls and campus with their love-making. To help these out, dances such as Merry Mix-Ups are given and help to provide the long way home. 4625 The Freshmen 1SpringI ALICE CLARK President JULIA PETERMAN Secretary MARY LOUISE AKE Vice-President OFFICERS CECIL GALLASPY Vice-President IFQIII HAROLD LEE President LAVERNE RATCLIFF Secretary - L, - A-...4A IUI ROW I' F1 dun I IIKIHIIIIIII. D. Bill Allen and assistants Dub Mattis and Danny Litwhiler. The Bears were victorious in their first game as they defeated Lafayette High School by a score of 12 to 6. ln the second game Bolton again con- quered their opponents by scoring 19 points while Neville scored 12. But in the first out-of-town clash the Bears were greeted by the very fast squad of Lake Charles High School, the final gun finding Bolton on the opposition's one-yard line and the game ending in a scoreless tie. The Golden Bears of Catholic High met the Blue Bears on their home field and defeated our boys by a 7-O score. This first defeat was followed by Bolton's victory over the Menard High School Eagles. This victory of 25-12 entitled Bolton to the city cham- pionship. The Bruins again proved victorious by scoring 7 points to Bogalusa's 2 in the first game of a series of regular scheduled clashes with Bogalusa High School. The squad again took to the road, journeying to New Orleans. There they were beaten by the Jesuit Blue Jays. The score, 46-6, was the largest score ever run up again a Bruin squad. By mutual agreement the Bolton-lstrouma game was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions in Baton Rouge. The squad was defeated for the third time in the closing game of the season, losing to the Ouachita lndians, 20-12. Next year Bolton looks hopefully to the newcomers, as well as the old regulars, to repay the teams who beat the Bears this season. A goodly number of promising prospects are now limbering up those stiff muscles during the spring practice session in order to be in shape when the whistle blows announcing the first game of next year's season. And perhaps, each will wait for the moment when Coach will call his name and give him the chance to show what he can do. So, while the boys are collecting bruises and charley horses, you girls had better look around and grab one now, because just think how proud you will be to strut around in one of those classy sweat- ers with the big B on the front. 5153.4 1 kj? iQZ,fifY ff French 46 L A LAWRENCE, Co-Coptoin TARVER D'ANGELO PENNY HETHERWICK DAVIS PALMER JOSEPH HOGGE KORNEGAY 4705 'IJ 5 , 'I' ,ff :gm , E cy Y ,L L-4 P 1 I 6 1 1 . Tarver, Malcolm Williamson. i i l l l l The i938-39 season saw the cagers up against some of their most powerful opponents, They played teams such as Byrd, Ouachita, Natchitoches, Neville and lstrouma and completed the season with a surprising number of victories. l l l Coaches Leo Marler and Danny Litwhiler have trained Bolton's basketball squad and are largely responsible for the team's excellent work. Their untiring efforts to make the team successful ancl their ability to spur the boys onward are qualities which make such a season possible. However, much praise should also be given to the basketball boys themselves. They, l too, were untiring in their efforts and their willingness to serve Coaches Marler and Litwhiler. The cooperation between the coaches and the boys made their excellent teamwork possible and, in that way, they were led to victory. Their ability is shown in the fact that this year there were a goodly nufnber of lettermen. And so, if any other organization wants to prove successful, all it need do is to follow in the footsteps of this year's basketball team. 4745 L+ ---Q , -9- A - - - -' in I- fix is Wig 1 Xi' lo lz gum: . - Q. 4 A ,Wk TENNIS TEAM TOP ROW: Mr. Peters, Howell Rogers, Sim Roark, G, L. Then Bobbie, Bolton's fun-'oving co-ed. Fran walks next, our daringly modern leader of cheers--and look who's heref Wesie, cute and sweet-the darling of the lower classmen. Doris, a duplicate of Vivian, need we say more? Then Barbara Ann, breath-takingly beautiful, takes her place. The spotlight falls an Mary as we choose her, Miss Bolton Hi. Mary's unselfish joy in giving the school her all will long be remembered as will the rest of the favorites. Now we leave this spirit of Royalty only to view another, the Bolton Carnival, the theme of which is Vignettes in Blue. Chosen for this year's court were: Queen Margaret Jane Wilson, Princess Barbara Ann Wilbur, Lady Louise Peterman, Lady Billie Ruth Ryder, and Lady Doris Gates. They chose as their escorts: King Joseph Dary Smith, Prince Branch Phillips, Lord Samuel l-laas, Lord Don Burnett, and Lord Thomas Hicks To carry out the theme of blue, the Ladies of the Royal Court wore various shades of blue dresses. The Queen, gorgeously attired in white, wore tulle over white taffeta. Each couple had four attendznts, two little boys and two little girls, who stole the hearts of all those present. The dances, well trained and beautifully executed, were assembled in colors ranging from the lightest blue to a deep ind'go. The beautiful call- out dance ended the Court Reception and was followed by dancing from ten until two. This year's carnival will long be remembered by all who saw it as one of the best ever held at Bolton l-ligh School. None of us will forget the blue background set off by the large cellcphane-covered ball which gave the school auditorium an air of royal splendor. im X mf-53 4 7 at 533 IIWW ,n X XJ v- . . ,I MISS BOLTON HIGH Mary Litteli mflc!
