XV. RUDGERS Sl'il'lll'P QQUIJQLI VWJIDS eruors OUR years ago a trembling, fearful horde of Freshmen 'invaded the portals of Bolton. They were like any other Freshman class-nondescript, frightened, immature, disorganized. This is the class that stands today ready to step out of these portals for the last time as students of Bolton High School. Every agency and force of the school has influenced the de- velopment of their character and intellect. They have had at their command the resources of fine minds and fine equipment and they leave the school, more mature, better prepared to meet the problems either of a college career or entrance into the adult world. Where four years ago, to the casual glance, there was little distinction among them, today orators and athletes, honor roll students, school leaders, and good followers stand out for their achievements. Tomorrow they will be gone-but each will remain an integral part of the tradition of Bolton so far as they have given of themselves to her and eagerly received everything she had to offer. Janice and Josephine were good editors, T. J. made football history, Warren was a swell cheerleader and canteen manager, Thomas guided the class through stormy waters, Etta Mae was fun and crazy, Deniston made his straight A's. Vivian was a lovely campus queen. Every member of the class contributed to its history. Though they, though only an echo of their names remains, still as long as Bolton stands they will be a part of its every accomplishment. 4125 . em ww QIEICICQWOQ wrsvrwx TERM VIII Prc'Sidz'nf T. J. Ready to be seniors, equipped with a studied air of nonchalance, a knack for getting by with pranks, and a wide know- ledge of Boltonism acquired during three years of ex- perience. But don't be misled. It's not superior or super- cilious or anything like that, only every member is eager for a try at running a new senior class as he 'thinks it should be run. And the whole is going to do its best to make 1939 a truly outstanding year in Bolton's history. The juniors have had three years to prove their worth and make themselves an integral part of school life. Outstanding members have been deservedly recog- nized and placed in positions of prominence. Mary Littell, two years a cheerleader, is outstanding in ability and popularity and was elected best all round junior. C. M. McSwain, football hero and honor roll student, has also done prominent work. Joe D. Smith, orator, debater, and twice class president, is another celebrity in class activi- ties. Numerous Honor Roll students andrally winners are listed, in the junior roll: R. S. Harper, many times class officer, is among the high ranking juniors, as well as Doris Pierce, three years a campus favorite, and Bar- bara Ann Wilbur, another popular member of the class. Potential editors, senior class presidents, members of the Hall of Fame, and medal winners will soon be no longer potential but in actual possession of these honors. The seniors who pass on join in a hearty wish that their successors may have a bon voyage and close their high school days with a happy and profitable year long to be remembered by all. 4485 - . ,. , 1:1 '-- uw--.A nwuvpnvq- 1 r-- ,f .,.,.,-'X 1 ,-11gugwqqqmik,A.l --A-vw , -1- fr- - -W-.fqx-M .. Its functions are at once interesting and educational, thrilling and informational. No other club in Bolton has done more to turn our eyes to the charm and color of the deep South. During their meetings the members discuss all of the aspects of their hobby. This year they have prepared maps of many countries and decorated them wth native stamps. BUSINESS CLUB Organized this year by the sponsors of the commercial department, the Business Club's activities complement classes in salesmanship, stenography, and bookkeeping by providing interesting additional information along these lines. TREASURY STAFF Another staff that ca1'ries on a great deal of Bolt0n's business is that of the Treasury. Students skilled in bookkeeping and stenography make up this group which handles all incoming and outgoing school funds totaling more than thirty thousand dollars annually. BOOK ROOM STAFF The function of the bookroom staff is a difficult as well as a vital one. It is easy to imagine what a job keeping track of thousands of books every year would be. That's the task that this staff successfully carries out. But without Mr. Miller's ex- perience and skillful direction it could never be accomplished. BACK ROW: Harry Vanderford. FRONT ROVV: Roy O. Besides attending to routine duties the staff under Miss Blanche Flemming' sponsored a Book Week Contest and set up attractive posters on the pleasures of reading. Without the staf'f's guidance in locating' books, the students would be lost to much of the Library's value. W. Rodgers and the manager- ship of Warren Ringgold. By contributing generously to many school activities as well as by furnishing the student body with school supplies this organization fills a vital place in the schools success. Thus, the canteen's help in financing the new stadium, boosting athletics, Bruin and other projects have been particularly Valuable. We owe the can- teen and its hard working staff a sincere vote of thanks for its coopera- tion with and support of the school. 4305 BIGGEST NEWS Bolton's record in Biggest News for a number of years has been outstanding. The contest, sponsored by the Times-Picayune, fosters an interest in world affairs among high school students. Bolton has been awarded the trophy several times. In the 1937 contest the school won second place with a total of 51 points. Leroy Leatherman, Josephine Ayres, Jane Byrd, Dorothy Gamburg, and Donald Wynn White were among the scorers. Leroy's, the only first prize winner, is presented below: - ---.Ti. , EVERY MAN HIS CASTLE L. LEATHERMAN To every true American his home is his castle, his haven of refuge from the hustle and bustle of modern life. If a man owns the house in which he lives he has a definite feeling of stability, as though his home was a tap root that held him steady in a storm. Shrewdly appealing to this age-old feeling of ours, President Roosevelt has begun anew his 'right for rehousing the United States. One of the biggest features of the original New Deal program was a housing plan. Now in an effort to avert further business decline and to speed up recovery, the chief executive has placed a new plan before Congress. Providing, through a medium of local building and loan associations, government aid of private citizens for home building, the program is inaugurated a new era in the relations between the federal government and private business. Roosevelt is again proving a great strategist by advocating a boost to private establishments, especially at this time when the administration has lost popularity in the ranks of small business concerns, and by appealing to America's home-loving nature. The administration's major drive to improve living conditions and to promote business recovery by accelerating residential constructions is Biggest News, not because of its immediate provisions but because of its possible aid to present financial conditions and its effect in stabi- lizing a population by the erection of a castle for every man and his family. 4815 rr 1' rr 'f' 'f ' Sophomores To achieve the rank of sophomore is really to accomplish some- thing in the judgment-at any rate-of the Sophomores. When we have reached that height, we are no longer so disgracefully ignorant of correct behaviour at Bolton. We no longer wander vaguely through the halls searching for our class for hours. We know what a Booster is, we recognize all the teachers at sight, we are not quite so scared of Mr. Brameg we laugh scornfully when an upperclassman tries to sell us an elevator ticket instead of gullibly producing a dime as We did last year. And most of all, since a new crop of ignoramuses is coming up, we can vent our feelings upon it viciously with lip-stick, mean cracks and what-not. That takes most of the sting out of the abuse we patiently bore in Freshman days. This year's Sophomore class has a fine record to its credit. Several members of the class have placed in the State Rally. A good many debaters have made the Senior Debating Club from terms III and IV. It has participated actively in athletics and other extra curricula activi- ties. There are some outstanding Bolton students in the class of whom the school may well be proud. Louise Peterman, elected best all-around sophomore, was given a close race by Betty Hill. These two up-and- coming sophs are cracker-jack debaters, having won a cup for their work. Donald Wynn White, one of the Term III sophomores., placed third in the Times-Picayune Biggest News Contest. This achievement was considered outstanding due to the fact that sophomores are not compelled to enter. In the spring class, Dick Slay, one of the footballers, is president, Bobbie Luckett, vice-president, Lorene Kelone, secretary. It's hard to start listing the leading Sophomores because the place to stop is difficult to find. Here's the best of luck for the next two years. May the class of '40 add to Bolton's glory. 4825 Soplw 0 m moe QQWOQ TERM VI S0cr1'fm'y LORENA KELONE Prcsidmzt DICK SLAY I 1'cc-P1'f'sz'dc11f BOBBY LUCKETT 4835 TERM ll I Vim-Pv'0side11t BETTY HILL Srfcratary JOE SANCHEZ Presiflent LOUISE PETERMAN BLACKMAN ARIAIL TOM ARMSTRONG 1 . The usual few weeks of bewilderment followed, until accus- tomed to the mighty halls and columns of Bolton, they began to gain assurance and look a little like old-timers. Meanwhile Sophomores gloated mercilessly over these timid Freshmen while Juniors and Seniors remarked with condescending glances that the Freshies seemed to get smaller every year. But with the football games to instill loyalty, plenty of time to get acquainted and elect officers, the class welded itself into one body aind made itself a part of Bolton's life. The newcomers were pre- paring themselves for four years of high-school life with all its ups and downs, problems, and responsibilities. They began to work toward the ultimate goal of gradua- tion, recognizing the outstanding members of the class and organizing their clubs. Betty Ann Hill was elected President of the fall class and Delia O'Shee, of the mid-termers. The studiously inclined took part in Rally work and others were elected to the Boosters and Bluebirds Clubs, open to Freshmen. The usual Freshman Literary Society acquainted them with the customs and rules of Bolton and as the months passed the Freshmen became full-fledged Boltonites. 4875 T769 VYTJVW ICGTJST CDW . The season in sports for the year 1937-38 opened with the usual enthusiastic welcome for the first football game. Veteran players as well as the new additions to the squad were given a chance to show their mettle after several weeks intensive training by Coaches 'Bill' Allen and 'Pop' Strange. On September 17, in the first game of the season, the team traveled to Lafayette and trounced that school 24-6 in its own territory. This victory was followed by another against Lake Charles on October 1 to the 'tune of 20-0. Then on October 8 the Bears suffered their first defeat at the hands of Catholic High of Baton Rouge in a game played in the L. S.. U. Stadium. The score was 12-0. Victory against Baton Rouge High lifted Bruin spirits and team and school embarked for Byrd to break the Yellow Jacket jinx. In a thrilling game characterized by game battling against a team which far out- weighed them, Bolton was defeated 14-6. In the last two games of the regular season the Bears degeated Istrouma High of Baton Rouge and Ouachita High of Monroe. The post-season play-off game against Baton Rouge's Catholic High resulted in a 3-0 victory for the Baton Rouge school and the Bears rang down the curtain for the '37 season. Several of the players ranked in state-wide ratings, while T. J. Price was awarded a position on the All-Southern Team. In addition to such a' fine group of players as a drawing card to football fans, the new stadium, splendid neon scoreboard, and lively band attracted large crowds to the home games. 4945 K' QV' BACK ROW: Ed Adams, Fred Workman, Curtis Dufour, John Blalock, Buddy McGill, Walter Heatherwick, Pa Lewis Robinson, C. The Bolton Track Team under Coach Allen enjoyed a fairly suc- cessful season in 1937. In the first meet of the year, a dual one with Baton Rouge High on the home field, the Bears were defeated 72-45 after gamely contesting every event. A large crowd of spectators en- joyed the meet, cheering enthusiastically for their favorites. At the Southwestern Rally held in Lafayette, Bolton showed well in all events, placing second in the mile, second in the hundred yard dash, first in javelin throw, and third in the hundred and twenty yard high hurdles. In an invitation meet held on Bolton's field, contestants from numerous schools took part. Here Baton Rouge High again took top honors with a score of 74 points. In the Natchitoches relay meet, Bolton won first place with a squad in good condition and training. State Rally, the culminating event of the year, resulted in another victory for the ex- ceptionally, good Baton Rouge squad. Here the Bears chalked up a good record, Winning fourth place. A large number of students went out for track in the spring of 1937, of whom the lettermen were J. Blalock, Jones, L. Blalock, Adams, Larson, Holt, Lawrence, Rudy, Price, McSwain, Workman, and Close, Manager. 4955 BACK ROW: Hazel Barron, Betty Bruner, Jack Lanier, Crystal Wharton, John Soden, G. L. Broussard. FRONT ROW: Wallace Hunter, Betty McClure, Gloria Seip, Jo Baker, Catherine Febiger, Ed Ray. TENNIS The Tennis Team of '37 coached by VV. A. Pop Peters, enjoyed a successful season in interscholastic competition tallying 8 wins, 2 defeats and a tie. The record was built up against outstanding schools of rank AA classification such as Byrd High School in Shreveport, Neville and Ouachita Highs, both of Monroe, and Lake Charles High in the south of the state. The girls teams showed up particularly well in both Rallies. Boys and girls both qualified at the Central Meet for entrance in the State Rally at Baton Rouge, but here the boys were unable to place. The girls took high honors by Winning, through Hazel Barron, state champion- ship in singles, and through Hazel with her partner, Catherine Febiger, second place in girls' doubles. Both these girls as Well as several of the boys played outstanding tennis through the entire year. 4965 '!'FW1hKf!gl5115!15g3f1-'gTg'r -1'gl'S'l 1f'f '2. i1I711w-7-.' ': '- '? A full season of twelve games kept the team busy and in fine training. The score for the year was an event split as Bolton Won six games and for- feited six to opposing schools. In rally competition the first game found the Bears ahead, but the second chalked up defeat and elimination. At the end of the year Coach Leo Marler, who has trained the team with good results for several years, expected better results for 1938 as many boys were returning to play ball that season. Teamsmen W. C. Rogers, Lee Jones, F. D. Holt, U. T. Downs, C. A. Berlin, James Ivy Barron, and T. J. State requirements for physical education for girls brought about great expansion in this department. Miss Lena Tay- l'or was untiring in her efforts to develop this phase of sports long neglected among school activities. Gym classes were organized at every period. Girls soon became enthusiastic about sports and teams in bas- ketball, soft ball, volley ball, track and other games were formed. The school was represented in Rally by more girls' teams that ever before. It is to be hoped that the girls' side of sports at Bolton, now that it has been organized on a larger scale, will continue to develop and expand in step with the progress of the school. 4985 - -sgd- - wg. mfg , ' ' ' A ' CALENDAR Sept. 7.
