0 mtuiN uyn PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF BOLTON HIGH SCHOOL ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA Bruin Staff Virginia Wheadon (Editor in Chief) H. F. Bradford Louise Pitts Abe Rubin (Associate Editor) (Assistant Associate (Business Manager) Editor) Herman Duncan Paul King Rand Rosa Lewis (Assistant Business (Art Editor) C. E. Ewing Managers) Albert Dasfit Delos Gayer Catherine Steiir (Art Staff) Marjorie Richardson Helen Bolton Justine Bruner (Social Editor) Florence Brennei (Athletic Editors) (Social Department) Hilma Holton Mary Duncan Buie (Advertising Editor) Betty Arrington Katherine David Malcolm Bradford (Advertising Staff) Mattie Nelson Mrs. Longmirk Willard Brister ( Bookkeeper ) Mr. Richardson (Typists) ( Sponsors) ♦ Theme ♦ COTTON ’ Long Live King Cotton!” has been the ery of his loyal subjects since he first unfurled over Louisiana the snowy banner that glorified its fields with fleecy whitness. The powerful king proved to be the realization of their hopes and worthy of the noble title conferred upon him for he brought prosperity and led them in the path of progress. But subjects are fickle and when a possible ruler, alluring Oueen Silk, compelled allegiance, there were mutterings of Down with the King!” Then as Prince Rayon and his syn- copated regime approached, the undermining of the royal throne beaan in earnest, and the support of King Cotton was considerably weakened. Recently a campaign has begun to reinstate the once- niightv monarch. For to the revolutionists there has been born the realization that from his fibre come their clothing and from his seed, food necessary to man. beast, and soil. They perceive now that he is friend of the poor, and luxury of the rich: that his every tiny fiber, blossom, or seed, means a step nearer sturdy prosperity. So cotton fairs, cotton festivals, cotton weeks, and cotton themes have been sponsored, and to these worthy endeavors this hook, the Bruin, is added. To the glory of King Cotton: may he rule forever. ♦-------------------------------------------------♦ I Dedication i— —♦ To Mr. Guy Nesom. a man of unusual ability, a friend who is really a friend, one who seizes every chance to better himself or others, we, the Senior Class, do dedicate this Bruin of 1932. Days may come; days may go; times may change, hut his friendship, sterling character, and willing service will always be remembered. He is our friend, faithful and just to all. Scott Miller Brame One of the finest examples of all that is best in a high-school executive, the embodiment of bonor and fearlessness. Mr. Brame is widely known and admired because of his well rounded anti perfectly balanced character: his background of culture afforded by a splendid education: his experience in wisely guitling boys anti girls through the difficult years of adolescence: anti his uhility and success in directing the social, athletic, anti scholastic needs of a great High School such as “Bolton.” Stephen (garell 'TREASURER J.HProiho SUPI. Resume of 1931 Track Season Bolton's track season was the best in several years, and six athletes set all time Bolton track records and three Central Louisiana Rally records. In the first meet of the year Bolton defeated Marksville and Cottonport easily by winning nine of the fifteen first places. Lawrence put the shot 45 feet in the first meet of his life. Lake Charles and Ouachita were met next and this proved to he easier than the previous meet. Brister starred by winning the 440 and 880 runs. In a dual match with Baton Rouge the Bears were defeated although Bolton won five first places from the State champions. Brister again proved outstanding by capturing both the 440 and 880 runs. McGinnis went to 11 feet in the pole vault; Barron made 5 feet 6 inches in the high jump: ami Marve won the 100- yard dash. The S. L. I. Relays in Lafayette were very exciting and close. Bolton won thin! in the high school division with the work of McGinnis in the pole vault outstanding. The greatest triumph of the season was the Central Louisiana Chamnionship. Captain McGinnis broke the low hurdles record with 26.8 seconds. Lawrence threw the shot 44 feet 6 1 2 in. to a new record and Marve made a new record in the hop. step, and iump with 44 feet. Bolton was more than ten points ahead of her nearest rival. The State Rally in Baton Rouge finished the season for til Bears and they won fifth place. Brister's work in winning the State Championship in the 440 was outstanding. I ntka-Mi r i. Basketball Bolton High School Company G. Wivnkh of the Girls’ ‘Gym” Tournament All-Star Basketball Girls Athletics Not the least of the activities in which Bolton justly prides herself is her endeavor in the field of athletic . The importance of the development of sound bodies as well as sound minds is fully recognized, and because of this recognition, the excellence and general perfection of our school is brought about. It is a well-known fact that physical health leads to moral cleanliness and mental soundness. No athlete can be a good sportsman without at the same time creating for himself an honor which will be his guide throughout life. No one enter- ing fully into the spirit of the game, enthusiastic and loyal, can fail to build up a wholesome character of a sort which will he a distinct asset to him in the great School of Life. Vi hat is more, no player skilled in the game, his brain alert, his faculties trained to the utmost, his abilities used in a manner making for will and intelligence, can truthfully assert that he has been turned out of school less than a finished prod- uct fully equipped for any contingency. Like the artist, the athlete, though he does not devote his life to the perfection of his work, nevertheless obtains from physical exercise that complete absorption and recreation which is necessary in the more successful pursuit of studies and full development of character, mind, and body. It was McTavish who sent his spats to the cobbler to be soled and heeled. An example of rigid economy—A dead Scot. Two men came out of a store. One was a Scotchman and the other hadn't bought anything either. Sandy bought an automobile as soon as he found his wife had gas on her stomach. We understand that Scotchmen are growing angry over the fact that so many jokes are being cracked at their expense. What do Scotchmen do with old razor blades? They shave with them. No Scotchman likes to wear rubber heels. They give. The difference between a Scotchman and a canoe: A canoe tips. Don't forget the Scotchman who phoned to find out when his girl was free. Kathkrine (in movie show)-—How do you like it? Jim—I think it’s ripping. Katherine—Thanks heavens it's dark in here. During a dull session of a certain club the other day one hoy got mad when he was congratulated on telling one truthful thing. This was his confession that he was a liar. Beverly Barry—Look out, John Henry, I am going to scare you. (She kisses him.) Now you scare me. John Henry—Booh! Girls! If he tells you he has quit smoking he only means he has quit smoking his own. Bennie—Come on. Listerine. Clara Reesf.—Why do you call me that? The Sheik—Because you take my breath away every time I see vou. Mr. Peters—And how do you find vour classes this year, my dear Mrs. Long mi re? Mrs. Longmire—Well, my dear Mr. Peters. I merely walk to the school and there they are. PltVLLIS—I just saw a man enter that speak-easy. Joan—My dear, don’t you mean speak-easily? “’Give me air!” I hear a feminine voice crying above the tumult. Rescue bent, 1 burst through the crowd just in time to see her drive into the garage with a flat tire. Eric-—I hang my head every time the family wash in the back yard. Cricket—O, do they? Eloise—All my ancestors were blondes. E1.GIN—Then you come from preferred stock. Klrai. Wit—Who was that lady I seen you with last night? IsHAM Kim BELL—That wasn't no lady. That was your wife. Charlie (cramming for a Latin exam.)—If you come from Troy that makes you a Troyite. By the way, lend me a sheet of paper. Lillian—Did you say you were from Paris? Voice from the void: What do you think I am. a contortionist? Feri —It must be tough on the people these days who live by their wits. Ann—But think of the half-wits. A Bolton co-ed and her swain sat singing love's sweet refrain— (He and She) A sudden step on the upper stair and mother finds them sitting there— (He and She) OLIVER—Have you had a lot of experience in gvm work? Libby—Well. I‘ve danced with a good many dumbbells. A Word of Appreciation rpHE ADVERTISING STAFF OF THE BRUIN WISH TO accept this medium of expressing their thanks to the busi- ness men of Alexandria for the splendid cooperation extended to them when approached for advertisements for the 1932 year- book of Bolton High School. We realize that appreciations of this type are more or less trite, or perfunctory, but such is not the case at this time. Everyone will admit that economic conditions have been any- thing but favorable for the past year, but in spite of the de- pression the firms and individuals whose name appear in this edition of the BRUIN, responded with as much enthusiasm as though stocks were turning in the usual way. It is the least we can do when we earnestly hope that the returns on their investment with us will more than repay the original cost of the advertisement. They have made possible for us a yearbook that pays its own way and regardless of the success of the book as a whole, if on publication, there is a financial loss, then such a record, must of necessity mar the efforts of the entire staff. In making it possible for the BRUIN staff to avoid such a misfortune they have contributed to a greater Bolton annual, and likewise have endeared themselves in the hearts of those who, had as a duty, the financial amanage- ment of the yearbook.
