x Ji ' THE BRUIN ' ,Q -,, m ROMANCES OF LOUISIANA Louisiana! Fair romance Hath written many lines for thee. Thy blood may boast of Spain and France, As well as that of Arcadyf' OUISIANA, since the day of her founding when LaSalle sailed down the Father of Waters and planted the French flag, has been woven into many legends because of its romantic background. Its pictur- esque characters, portrayed in poems and love stories of every nation, are living today as mementoes of their romantic past. Louisiana possesses every qualification necessary to be the setting of such poignant love affairs. Nothing could be more beautiful than the shady bayous of southwest Louisiana, with the gray Spanish moss fluttering down from the tall, gnarled cypresses, which seem to hover over the water. Those bayous are such streams as Hiawatha would have loved to float on in his birch canoe- so cool, so restful, so musical, and so beautiful. One may have seen the sea at sunset, or the distant mountain ranges looming purple through the dawnlg one may have seen the great Sahara, with its endless wastes of yellow sands, but until one stands on the banks of a Louisiana bayou or in the center of one of her virgin forests, be it morning, noon, or night, and gives his senses to the spell of the cypress, water and moss, he cannot possibly have seen and appre- ciated real beauty. Louisiana is one of the most historic states in a historic nation. These numerous and versatile romances have affected our progress and our history. Not only the French, who contributed most, but also the Indians, Spanish and truly American characteristics have done their bit towards adding to this glamorous legend. Evangeline lent pathos to the situationg Lafitte has inspired many a legend of reckless daringg St. Denis and Dona Maria added their chapter to the book of romance, Bienville accomplished the impossible, so that his love for the beau- tiful rival of Governor Cadillac's daughter, might be gratified. Our theme is the romantic lovers of Old Louisiana. May we, in continuing our school career and in later life, be greatly inspired and influenced by the endurance, the intensity, and the eternal faithfulness of those lovers of that by- gone day when the French king's scepter waved over our state. 1930
