Thy blood may boast of Spain and France, As well as that of Arcadyf' OUISIANA, since the day of her founding when LaSalle sailed down the Father of Waters and planted the French flag, has been woven into many legends because of its romantic background. Its pictur- esque characters, portrayed in poems and love stories of every nation, are living today as mementoes of their romantic past. Louisiana possesses every qualification necessary to be the setting of such poignant love affairs. Nothing could be more beautiful than the shady bayous of southwest Louisiana, with the gray Spanish moss fluttering down from the tall, gnarled cypresses, which seem to hover over the water. Those bayous are such streams as Hiawatha would have loved to float on in his birch canoe- so cool, so restful, so musical, and so beautiful. One may have seen the sea at sunset, or the distant mountain ranges looming purple through the dawnlg one may have seen the great Sahara, with its endless wastes of yellow sands, but until one stands on the banks of a Louisiana bayou or in the center of one of her virgin forests, be it morning, noon, or night, and gives his senses to the spell of the cypress, water and moss, he cannot possibly have seen and appre- ciated real beauty. Louisiana is one of the most historic states in a historic nation. These numerous and versatile romances have affected our progress and our history. Not only the French, who contributed most, but also the Indians, Spanish and truly American characteristics have done their bit towards adding to this glamorous legend. Evangeline lent pathos to the situationg Lafitte has inspired many a legend of reckless daringg St. Denis and Dona Maria added their chapter to the book of romance, Bienville accomplished the impossible, so that his love for the beau- tiful rival of Governor Cadillac's daughter, might be gratified. Our theme is the romantic lovers of Old Louisiana. May we, in continuing our school career and in later life, be greatly inspired and influenced by the endurance, the intensity, and the eternal faithfulness of those lovers of that by- gone day when the French king's scepter waved over our state. 1930 CONTENTS Y f FACULT xCLASSE . --H Y - Y K -W DEDICATION The Senior Class of 1930, in sincere appreciation of his services to us, wish to dedicate this Sixth Volume of The Bruin to Mr. Hardy Beseler, whose enthusiasm and untiring services for the betterment of athletics have inspired the entire student body to he good winners and good losers -who, since his coming to Bolton in 1922, has proved to be a friend as well as an instructor to all those with whom he has come in contact. 9 0 IN MEMC DRIAM KATIE SCHXY AB 1912-1929 Lilw a Iwauii ul sun I llml was sun f 5- 5- slw has pnssvrl Into Ihr' hush of Ilw vnllvy of silafrzvv. They have their faults and their fancies, And one teacher in his time plays many parts, His acts being to guard our seven stagesf At first the attendance teacher., X Correcting and guiding us from harms. And then the English teacher, scowling and frowning, When e'er we choose to call a verb a noun. Then the study hall teacher, with pencil In one hand and demerit pad in other, Sudden and quick in writing when we choose to talk Then the captivity period, where we are held Captives for awhile, deep in study, or So the teacher thinks! Then the bookkeeping teacher lMr. Franckj, With eyes severe and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modern instances, And so he plays his part. Then the history teacher with map on wall And rule in hand, to point the places We all should know so well. Last scene of all that ends this strange, Eventful day, the kept in room,', where Lo, we find, second childishness and mere oblivion Sans tablet, sans book, sans pencil, sans everything. 1930 fx 1' tk is , 'J -Nd '--'lf ' eff? Long hefore the appointed hour, the auditorium was crowded with eager spectators, proud parents and the social buds of Bolton. The court was modeled after the Court of Isabella and Ferdinand, and the decorations, music, and costumes carried out this Spanish theme to perfection. Her Royal Highness the Queen, Miss Evelyn Begnaud, was superb in her golden gown, tiny crimson slippers, and the Spanish comb in her hair. Billy Candy, her King, was regal in his costume of a cavalier with the royal purple robe over his shoulder, the golden crown on his head, and the sceptcr ol' the royal state in his hand. The four maids wore long costumes in bouffant style with mantillas of old lace draped over high Spanish combs, 'while each knight, in the costume of a cavalier of times gone by, carried his lady's colors in neckerchief and flowing sash. The maid-of-honor, Miss Ray Foote, in orange, entered on the arm of her handsome Spanish knight, Fred Bearden. Miss Virginia Rockwell, gallant- ly escorted by ,lack Keith, was beautiful in rose and silver. Miss Mildred Dun- nam entered next in gown of orchid with accessories of harmonizing tints. L. G. Neilson was her handsome knight. Miss Lurlene Blackwood's blonde beauty showed off to an unusual advantage in her frock ot' blue, as she entered with her knight, John Overton. At 10 oiclock the floor was given over to general dancing and, under the spell of soft music, the couples made merry until the lateness of the hour forced them to bid adieus. Both girls are in excellent trim, and it is hard to tell who will represent us in the Central Louisiana and State Rallies. Ernestiue and Dorothy have played two matches so far, Dorothy winning the first and Ernestine the seeond. The boy tennis stars at Bolton this year are Benton Patterson and Frank Keslinsky. ln the tryout for singles, Frank Keslinsky won over Benton, but they are hoth good players and promise excellent competition in both singles and doubles. The mixed doubles will he made up of Benton Patterson and the girl who fails to win out in the single tryout. Such a team as Bolton has this year should show championship caliber and win the tournament for Bolton. 1 Mg. - P' mt: BRUIN tp f ,-1'-J fs.. TRACK Track season opened in earnest on March 3, this year, when Coach Oliphant issued the call for the cinder track candidates. Our coach hails from the Mag- nolia state where he represented the Mississippi A. St M. College of Starkville, Miss., in the mile and two-mile events. Before coming to Alexandria he coached track and other sports for a number of years at Vicksburg, Miss. Letter men who answered the first call were Nolan Marye, Henry Mes- singer, Charlie Moore and Harry McGinnis. All of these men made excellent records in dual meets and rallies last year. At the beginning of the season, Charlie Moore was .lost to the team due to an old injury, received during the football season. His injury re-occurred in the Bolton, Lecompte, Marksville meet, which Bolton won by a wide margin on March 15. The next meet scheduled, Lake Charles on March 22, was cancelled on account of an emergency. On March 28 the Bolton High School trackmen engaged in a quadrangular meet on their own home grounds with Winnheld, Glenmora and Lecompte. The score in this meet was: Bolton 71, Winnfield 37, Glenmora 20, and Lecompte 12. Other meets on the schedule to be engaged in are listed below: Baton Rouge fat Baton Rouge! , April 3. Central Louisiana Rally, Pineville, April 11 and 12. State High School Rally, April 25 and 26. ,fx f . , - Z N 2 ai, f + f fi , , X 2' '- f ' fi A21 '35'g ' ff Q- 'I f . 3 ff!
