Besides taking care of these students, which makes up much of her job, she must test the vision and hearing of all students. The secretaries are an efficient, hard-working group. Together they keep accurate school records of numerous items and are always busy typing, answering the phone, or doing some sort of paperwork. They are an aid to administration, faculty, and students alike. 21 M_«cst- Mrs Satterthwaite L Mrs Eadington AND ART 1 Miss Burns MUSIC iffyfi ' ' Zf p A i ' t Mr D Anna Mr Paulisso 22 l|i ■!■■■Ml WIIIH K ' ll Mr. San Filippo Mr Gimber Mr Schevez Student Teacher Mrs Ross Mr. Frawlev Mr. Schweitzer MATHEMATICS I I  Mr Collins h|t? Ditferent levels are taught, and each teacher has a different style. Freshman English consists mainly of grammar and composition. As the student progresses, the studies become more complex American literature is placed in the curriculum of the Junior English classes, and English literature is studied in Senior English For the more interested students, classes in World literature and creative writing are offered. World literature consists of the study of writings ranging from Hellenic Greek through contemporar European to Asian literature. After completing the basic two-year program, the student may branch off to his special field of interest. The courses offered var from drafting to electricity to ood and metal shops The student is given an opportunity to experiment and learn by himself. He becomes exposed to new situations which are not possible to experience in regular classrooms. i 28 HOMEMAKING Mrs. Hedrick Education in homemaking is essential for a decent standard of living. Tfie curriculum of this field is designed to teacfi the skills, knowl- edge, and interest necessar to achieve this decent standard. Homemaking is beneficial to other areas of learning also. It provides a background of knowledge for other closely related fields in the sciences. It provides the opportunity to use ideas to create new things. i  J H f «r H f. { M Mrs Beitel Christmas Dinner 29 B U s I N E S s Mr Igou Mrs Scott Mrs. Leonhart Mr Watucki The Business Department is quite versified. Courses taught range from basic typing classes to studies in business law and consumer business. Application of the skills taught is the main method of instruction. 30 Mr Weetman Mr Shimobakuro Mr Smith The Boys Physical Education Depart- ment is run by dedicated teachers who strive to keep every boy physically fit. Physical fitness is very important because it has been proven that the more physi- cally fit a bo is, the better student he is. As a result, the teachers try to offer a varied program in order to stimulate an interest in every student These teachers are also responsible for creating in man bo s an interest to par- ticipate in competitive, extra-curricular sports. i fti tl (7 ' V Mr Brierly Mr. Center Mr Chun Mr Rust Mr. Meissner Mr. Evans SCIENCE The main purpose of the Science Department is to provide students with a good foundation in the life and phssical sciences. After one ear of required general science, students are given an opportunit to further their education in this f ield. Courses in Biol- ogv. Advanced Biology, Physiology, Chemistry, and Physics are offered, and laborator facilities are available to gather a better understanding of the course through the use of certain equipment. Mr an Scovoc 32 ' IF ' GIRLS ' P.E. Mrs Lampe Miss St. John Miss Dombrowski Mrs Finnigan Miss Ruth Contrary to the beliefs of many people, it is just as necessary for a girl to be physically fit as it is for a boy to be. As a result, every girl who is physically able must take an active part in physical education every day. The girls physical education program is created to expose every student to many types of sports and activities. Those students who have an interest in a particular sport are given the opportunity to participate in after-school activities. 33 SPECIAL EDUCATION Mr. Pugh Mrs. Hansen The facult of the Special Education Department is re- sponsible for teaching the slower students the basic skills and knowledge necessary for self-sufficiency. These students are taught the same subjects as the regular students, but the have smaller classes in order to receive the ma.ximum amount of individual instruction necessary for their level. The teacher ' s main goal is to prepare the students for problems they will face later in life. In Germany E a attended a school ecjuixalent to an American high school, where she will study one more year before attending the Uni ersity of Cxilogne. What she is ery impressed by and likes very much about Bolsa is the school spirit. E a anted to come to .America to better know and understand the .American people and their customs. Of all that Eva has seen, the beach ranks first on her list. She claims that it is impossible to get to enjoy all the good things about California during one year. Eva hopes very much to come back to the United States. She has already figured out that the cheapest w ay to come back is w ith the freighter into the gulf for S240! Everyone wishes Eva the best of luck for the future and hopes that she has profited from her experi- ences as much as Bolsa has profited from having her on campus. She now resides in Garden Grove v ith the Richard L. Miller family, whose daughter C inda is a junior at Bolsa In Holland .Ans attended a school hich prepares its students for a university education. Majoring in lan- guages and social studies, she hopes to become a teacher of Dutch ihe beautiful scenery, especially that of Yosemite and Death Valley, is what .Ans likes best about Califor- nia. She enjoys Bolsa because of the activities which are offered and likes the school spirit, which she feels makes the school to be a unit, a communitv of which e ery kid is a part .Ans wished to come to the United States to get a better image of the way American people live and to experience the high school, v hich offers a lot of activ ities besides education. Her famiK consists of her mother, father, two brothers, and one sister. Here she is staying with Mr. and Mrs. George Wright, who ha e both a son and a daughter attending Bolsa. .Although ' ick enjo s all the activities at Bolsa, her favorites are the assemblies and the games. She also likes the students and the teachers, who have been very helpful around campus. In keeping with her hobb and major of languages, ' ick hopes to become a translator in English, German, and Spanish. To learn more about the English language was a reason for coming to the United States additional to the reason of being able to see what the . mericans are really like. By the time Vicky leaves the United States, she will have reached her goals because she has won man friends. It has been Bolsa s pleasure having from Den- mark such a warm personality and representative on campus. ANGE STUDENTS Marisa Vicky Marisa Padovan is this year s foreign exchange stu- dent from Trieste, Italy . She is the only one of our four foreign students who came to the United States under the program of the .American Field Service. There are three other people in her family: her mother, father, and older brother. While in Italy, Marisa attended a professional school for secretaries. She claims that she likes everything about Bolsa, especially the school spirit. Her plans for the future include studying language at a university and, hopefully, working at the atomic center in Trieste. What Marisa likes the best about California is the friendliness of the people. . lso, she enjoys the climate because she can go swimming even in the winter. Marisa ' s other hobbies are much like those of any average Americ an: listening to music, going to the theater, traveling, and reading Peanuts. To know how life is in another country, to have a better knowledge of the language, and also to come in contact with another world . These were Marisa s reasons for wishing to come to . merica. The United States, California, and Bolsa have certainly been a different life and world. Lisa Trigg From Bolsa to Sweden For three months during the summer, Lisa Tr gg represented the United States as well as Bolsa Grande and California abroad in Sweden under the Youth for Under- standing program. She u as chosen on qualifications of personaiit , a general knowledge of national and world affairs, and high academic standing, Sweden was her choice out of the countries offered because of her partial Sw edish ancestr and her interest in Europe. In arnamo, a cit in southern Sweden, she stayed with the Frost famiK (her mother, four brothers, and one sister) in a large three-story house. Besides seeing the historical attractions of Sweden, Lisa enjoyed the countr side and the popular sports of sailing, rowing, and fishing. She was fortunate in being there on that da in June w hen the sun never sets. During that sunlit night, Lisa related that the people ne er sleep, but cele- brate. She also had the opportunit of traveling through Norway, Finland, Denmark, and German). What Lisa missed most about the United States were hamburgers, french fries, and big cars; what she misses most about Sweden are the pastries and her Swedish family and friends. It can be seen that she fa )rabl represented .America to the Sw edish people because her Swedish sister is now a foreign exchange student in Michigan and some of her friends plan on coming to the U.S. this summer. Lisa is grateful to the organization of Y.F.L ' for making possible what she calls the most unique and exciting summer of m - life.
