You have the neces- sary tools to enable you to live a full life. You are prepared to enter college. You will suc- ceed in college and in life if you possess one thing - COURAGE. There are two real kinds of courage. There is the physical courage displayed by the sol- dier on the battlefield or the athelete on the field of sport, and there is the moral courage which enables us to confront our daily tasks without fear. Courage to do the right thingg to say no to temptationg to endure and strive for self-betterment. Courage to put our ideals and that which we have learned into operation throughout our lives. Knowledge is of no value unless you have the courage to turn that learning into the ful- fillment of your ideals. Someone once said: Mere ideals are the cheapest things in life. The realization of those ideals requires real courage. Good luck. DeWitt E. Hooker Major FA-ORC Superintendent 7 f., A I x Ziff,-fi.. .. Charlie, however, wasted little time in tears. He knuckled down with the Stern determination of an aggressive lad facing the complexities of the sixth grade, and, thereby, set a pattern. That pattern has been one of successful accomplishment. N 51 VT,-Q' J' i glial-W6 The following year saw him proudly explaining the ropes to Canaday, Folsom, Mal- lory, Tommy Taylor and Bubba Williams who were being initiated into the problems which arise in the seventh grade. Stalwarts all, they fell in with the pattern and began the develop- ment of a sense of leadership and responsibility that was to come into full bloom in later years and make the Class of 1950 outstanding in the annals of Bolles. By 1946, the year which found our Class Founder in the first year of his high school career, he and his cohorts were reinforced by the arrival of such stout fellows as Atkins, Ball, Ben- bow, Bliss, Borland, Carr, Deacy, Hugh Gregory, McCall, McLeod, Mahorner, Newton, J., and Roy Sheppard. Now the Class was, indeed, firmly established. Now the record began to show more than mere promise. Even as freshmen this Class of 1950 indicated outstanding ability and definite leadership in many and varied fields. On through the Sophomore and junior years our story runs. More members - more suc- cesses. Anderson, Pete Alexander, john Andrews, Boyd, Brice, Crosby, Hudson, Huguelet, jones, Love, McCarter, Manos, Roy Newton, O'Hara, Paulsen, Rushton, Scott, Danny Smith, Lin Taylor, Turner, Vaughn, Venable, Waters, Wilder, jimmy Williams and Raul Zelaya were now in our ranks, and serving as welcome additions to our list of veterans. By the end of its junior year, the Class of 1950 had stamped itself indelibly on the pattern that had been faintly etched back in those early years. On the athletic field, in the classroom and in mili- tary and naval activities the pattern became more and more vivid. Boasting membership in the Student Council, the National Honor Society, the B Club, th'e Quill and Scroll, and all other student organizations the Class had well established itself. The final year, that fateful year, the great year arrived, and with it several new members joined our ranks: Ackley, Bell, Chappel, Clayton, johnson, MacDonnel and Vince Walker. The Class of 1950 has worked as a unit for the last time. The pattern is complete. We have done our best, and now we part. Next year will find us scattered, but, with our depart- ure, this Class of 1950 becomes a spirit and a tradition. We trust that our record will be an ever present inspiration for succeeding generations for many years to come. ITTW W '21-Q 11? '9 ' .D , , ,, 5151 If., Tires ' T' ' ,. ' gt? viihvylgirff--' .ml 1. The won-lost record, however, tells very little of the team's season. The Bolles team faced a very strong schedule of which six were powerful Northeast Conference teams. The other games were played against two of Florida's preparatory schools, Saint Leo Prep and Admiral Farragut Academy. The team which was big and powerful, reached its peak but once during the season, and that was when it defeated St. Paul's in the Gator Bowl. Bubber Williams, team captain, was the spearhead of the attack all season, ably assisted by Ray McCall. Season-long injuries to Pete Alexander and Ellis Crosby impaired the offense and, without doubt, made a difference in the final results. On the defense, it was again Williams with Gaddis, Andrews, Benbow and Saunders out- standing. Seniors who were awarded letters were: john Andrews, Charles Benbow, john Boyd, William Carr, Charles Clark, Ellis Crosby, Raymond McCall, Calvin Newton, Roy Newton, jerry Paulsen, Daniel Smith, Bubber Williams and Man- 'R ager Hugh Gregory. Non-senior lettermen were: Mike Gaddis, Dean Gor- don, Alvis Howell, George Kramer, Bob Langley, Rupert Mann, Paul Mathews, R. D. Saunders, jim Tyson. Other squad members who are eligible to play next year are: Dickie Dixon, Tom Dowling, Bruce Norman and Frank Strozier. Captain Lloyd Bergen, Head Coach, and Lieut. Charles Lamb are able coaches and with a few breaks might have had a most successful season. i r l HEAD COACH ASSISTANT COACH CAPT. ELLIS Cnosnv BASKETBALL Prospects of a bright basketball season were evident as all but two members of the 1949 Northeast Florida Conference Champions were on hand. At this writing, only three of seven games have been won, and, may we add, at no time has the squad been at full strength. In- juries, some carried over from football, and illness following the holidays have made their toll. Bubber Williams, team captain, at this time, has the highest scoring average in the city, while Crosby and Huguelet each held back by injuries and illness, are not far behind. Bolles basketball teams are limited to two weeks practice between football and the Christ- mas holidays, after which they plunge into hard schedules with but a few days practice meeting seasoned teams. On the other hand, they have always been ready to go in February, and we hope this season will be the same as others. Seven of the nine players are seniors and two are sophomores. The B team should produce a few boys for next year. The strength of the future, however, is in the ninth grade where there is a wealth of good ball players. Their latest victory was over Kirby-Smith jun- ior high school, this being the first time a ninth grade team has won from this school. Major Mark Bradley is coach of the Var- sity. Captain Lloyd Bergen has the B team. Major Lamar DuBose is handling the tenth grade teams at games. Lieut. Charles Lamb coaches the ninth grade team, while Captain Emile Roth, as usual, is turning out the boys in the Lower School. CAPT. Games with the local high schools and nearby Northeast Conference teams are sched- uled for the Spring. O. S. GAMES Head Coach SWIMMING Bolles, the perennial Northeast Conference Champions, will have but few letter men with which to build this year's team. But, like every preceding year, we shall find boys who have grown up in the Bolles pool shaving off the seconds from their previous times, and they will fill the gaps. Last year, the team won all of its dual meets and the Northeast Conference meet in the Welch pool at Daytona Beach. Usually Bolles places among the first live in the State, but with Atkins out because of illness, we failed to place very well. jim Borland Dives The boys pictured on this page are expected to be the mainstays in their particular events. Ketterlinus Tennis under the guidance of Harvey Wood might be the forerunner of important events in the future of Bolles. With the land between the outfield of the baseball field and the main highway ear- marked for tennis courts, with the year-round climate for the sport, it could be an induce- . ment for tennis proteges in the north to wend their way to Bolles. Anyway, that is what we have in mind. The team itself lost but two matches, and both to Ketterlinus high school, or, shall we say, the pupils of jerry Teeguarden, the professional at the Ponce De Leon Hotel in St. Augustine. With the Northeast Conference and State Tournaments looming up in February, jim Mahorner and Isaac Foinquinos have been journeying with Lieut. Wood to St. Augustine on weekends to take instructions from Mr. Teeguarden. Every boy in the up- per school has been permanently assigned to one of four athletic groups, two from the mili- tary unit, the A Company Reds and Golds, and two from the naval unit, the B Company Greens and Blues. Members of the Band were divded among the four groups. Football which has had varied intramural experiences has finally found its groove in a four-man league. The competition between the Champions, the Company B Greens and the Company A Golds was keen. Their first meeting ended in a tie game, 'and the second went to the Greens, but not before they held the Golds for four downs within three yards of the goal line in the last play of the game. The All-Company team selected by the coaches included: Lamar Waters, Clark Win- free, Trusten Drake, Fred Thellman, Jack Joiner, Ewing Anderson, Jim Mahorner, Con- ner Sheppard, Bill Richardson, Kenneth Hayes, Steve Walker and Jim Borland. Through its connections in other cities, it enables you to buy goods, pay bills not only in Jacksonville but everywhere in the world.
