D. 3 BOOK I -- PAGE 6 H TRIBUTE Tll THE BULTES HlUllllll To the Cadets who are living the immediate routine of life here at Bolles, perhaps the Bolles Alumni seem somewhat apart from any close connection with the School-perhaps these Alumni stand somewhere, in the minds of the Cadet Corps, in a sort of special- ized, nebulous status that lies between that of being a member of the Student Body and of being connected somehow with the mem- bership of the Faculty, Feeling that this may represent rather aptly, for many, the student concept, we believe that this particular page is especially suitable for- A Tribute To Our Alumni . The Bolles Alumni took a very active part in the recent World War, serving their country in all branches of the Armed Services with Honor, Bravery, and Distinction, Nine of these Bolles boys made the Supreme Sacrifice, At the conclusion of this War many returned to their homes to re-enter business careers where they are achieving outstanding success, others resumed college studies with equal success, and others have started the routine of their life work. We honor and respect them for all of this and for the luster this has added to the name of Bolles, and to the Alumni Association. However, we understand and appreciate more personally the evi- dences of their continued interest in Bolles, which is shown most forcibly by their repeated visits to the School and the unmistakable affection shown for it when they are here. This plainly demonstrated tie of loyalty and affection for Bolles on the part of the Alumni is a source of inspiration to the present Student Body in their feeling for their School, and we hope this will provide us the guiding trend of our contacts and relations with Bolles when we become Alumni. Hodges, Hinck, ond Fewell formed the embryo of the Groduoting Closs of i948-o closs which finolly developed into the lorgest thot Bolles hos ever hod. The close-following yeor of V940 brought forth the mechonicol genius of the motley group, Krueger, who wos joined only twelve months Ioter by Busck ond Mills lW.l. ln i942 the Closs commenced to become of some size with the voluoble odditions of Reese, Presser, Dortch, ond Dovis U. Sl. However, reol growth wos not detected until lote in l943, when nine illustrious chorocters, Jomes, Gory, Groves, Wheeler, Kinnord, Morehouse, Brown lC.l, ond Conner, found their woys to the greot Institution of Leorning. The next time the eorth encircled the sun, Andrews, Blonton, Brock, Hoile, Skoggs, Morx, McLourin, Phillips, Swindol, Swink, ond VonDiviere goined the guiding light, ond settled down in Bolles for the lost doys in their high school coreers, The Senior Closs of i948 wos tokingshope, olmost one-holf of it wos beginning to register on the book report records ond the credit tollies. i945 sow the lorgest portion of the Closs foll into line with Boron, Compbell, Ellis, Forster, Fronz, Hirsch, Ogilvie, Pickens, ond Rondoll, occomponied by Ruther- ford, Sonderford, Smith, Stroke, Stripling, Swortwout, Voncler Lugt, Weover, ond Willioms. The completion come in l947, when come to Bolles Bortholomew, Dilts, Mills lS.l, Morris, Reod, Rogers, Schellenger, Slep, Trindode, ond Weise. Thus developed the lorgest ond probobly the most fruitful groduoting closs yet to poss through the portols of Bolles. These seventy-four boys come to the School, leorned together, ond grew up in it. For many years the Military Unit ot The Balles School has been regarded as the epitome of discipline in the institution. Under the capable direction at Major William H. Davis, P. M. S. G T., and his assistant, Major Robert W. Trusdell, the Military Unit has proceeded to distinguish Belles as one at the outstanding martial establishments in the South. A 55C classification was given the School several years ago by the Fourth Army Service Command, although recent Federal Inspec- tions have given the organization higher percentile ratings than many other groups with higher Army Classifications. Q Throughout the school year of i947-i948 Companies A and D have main- tained their status, having constantly striven to reach the ultimate in military activities, Work on the part ot many individuals in the Unit has readily been rewarded with the result ot its becoming nearly perfect in organization, discipline, and initiative. This, probably the most outstanding military unit that Bolles has ever had, we now present. BOOK III - PAGE 4 l ll All E F MILITARY NON-COMMISSION ED OFFICERS .ff 1 :I-'-. -gf 2 7 1433 Q ,. . . . Andrews and his predecessor, AI Busck, the Bolles Bugle enjoyed a year which was graced by the publishing of a few fine issues. Appearing at infrequent intervals, the school paper expressed, tor once, the sentiments of the student body mingled with the usual journalistic and school obligations. However, with its many handicaps, the Bugle offered pleasurable experience for those ambitious enough to cope with its disadvantages and eager enough to submit to its labors. The highest commendation should be given to its editors for the honor garnered by the winning ot second place in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association high school journalistic contest. ,BOOK IV - PAGE 3 EDITOR ........ This privilege was certainly not worn out from overuse this year. GLEE CLUB Among the highlights ot the school year is the annual Christmas Candlelight Service, presented by the Cilee Club. Under the direction ot Captain Donald N. Galloway, the tour-part choir has been untaltering in its yearly successes in furnishing dignified and harmonious performances. Containing no less than titty members, this club is unusually large for a school the size of Bolles. Nevertheless, the music it has been capable ot producing is rarely surpassed by other high school choruses of even larger numbers, A reputa- tion ot long standing ol the Glee Club is indeed something tor Bolles to be proud ot. HOCHHEIM OCIETY Perhaps the most active organization in the school, the Alpha Society has been noted tor its eagerness to get into all phases ot school lite. Foremost in sponsoring journalism, its two pub- lications, The Alpha Review and Your Week, have long been associated with interesting repre- sentation ot student lite. Its Emporiums at all varsity contests combined with the exclusive publication ot football programs place it in an abstract way in the athletic depart- ment. And certainly no other organization can claim the distinction ot giving more picnics and outings tor its members. And yet, this year's Alpha Society was a tar cry trom the days when it was first formed. The lack ot enthusiasm in its members severely handi- capped the organizations sterling president, Ben James. Only as a result ot his relentless ettorts can the Alpha Society say it has accomplished its purpose. BOOK IV - PAGE 8 In the front rank of the field of jour- nalism at Bolles is the weekly bulletin, Your Week. Published by the Bolles Chapter of the National Honor Society, the paper is edited by Ben James, Jr. and Bob Wernikoff. Probably the most outstanding feature about the mimeo- graphed publication is the fact that it appears every Monday throughout the school year, the editors having main- tained this policy undauntingly for seven years of the bulletin's existence. Containing.various colorful articles on everything from school events to inter- national news, the paper also includes important weekly rosters and calendars, all combining to produce an informative and entertaining source of news for the reading public. Quii.i. AND scnou. Through the need tor some consolidated journalistic group to pacity the extreme competition among the school publications, the above organization was inaugurated three years ago by the students themselves. This competition has dwindled throughout the preced- ing years until now there is almost none. The types of journalism have become too disassociated to otter clashes in thought. For this reason, the entire activities ot the Quill and Scroll were confined to the Southeastern lnterscholastic Society ot Journalism, which was founded at Bolles, the Quill and Scroll sponsoring the executive committee meet- ing ot this society in the early part of the year. Since the Bolles delegation to the S. l. S. J. Convention was entirely dominated by the Bugle, this cannot honestly he called a Quill and Scroll function. SENIOR ADVISORY COUNCIL One of the most little-known organizations in the school is the Senior Advisory Council. This group was formed three years ago for the purpose of consolidating the thoughts of the Senior Class. This council makes it possible to obtain a well- rounded representation of the class without collecting the entire seventy-two members and discussing the numerous viewpoints offered. EMILE ROTH CAPT. OCTAVIO GARCES The four men pictured above are the head coaches of our varsity football, basket- ball, baseball, and swimming teams respectively. Belles does not have a large complement, thereby limiting the athletics, but in spite of such handicaps the coaches have worked miracles, ln football, Capt. Dean Robinson has taken boys whom have played very little football and have developed them into excellent varsity material. Major Mark Bradley begins to develop his basketball potentialities as soon as they enter school. Sometimes he is compelled to wait two or three years before they are ready for the varsity, but he is patiently coaching the finer points of basketball. This is Capt. Roth's first year of the Bolles baseball squad, but we feel confident that with his abilities as a coach he will inevitably produce winning teams for the old Alma Mater. ln the aquatic division, Capt. Octavio Garces has led the cadet swimmers into two undefeated seasons. Reidy Williams and John Gary, in their brief high school athletic careers have won positions on the Florida All State and All Conference football teams, positions which are highly envied by all high school potential athletes. Reidy has made the Florida All Conference Team for two consecutive years as center, and John Gary Little All State end for the V947 season. These two boys are the only athletes in Bolles who have attained such honors during the i947-i948 school year, and are to be congratulated by all for their outstanding participation in athletics here at the school. The combination, Kinsey to Gary, clicked for 6 points, and Tommy Allen made an outstanding run for the other 6 points. BOLLES 7-ST. PAUL 42 Bud Kinsey scored the only touchdown that night for the Cadets, The Cadets were handicapped by a series of injuries-for 7 consecutive plays a Bolles Cadet limped or was carried off of the field. Tommy Allen will always be remembered for his bone crushing tackle in the second quarter. BOLLES 25-ADMIRAL FARRAGUT 7 Gary made first touchdown of game, but from there on out Kinsey and Allen had a field day. Allen's 70 yard run was the highlight of the game, Stripling and Van Diviere played outstanding football on their birthday. BOLLES I8-FLORIDA MILITARY ACADEMY I4 Gary caught three touchdown passes during the first half. The linemen will always remember Pros ' words of wisdom throughtout the game. BOLLES 12-OCALA 20 Just before the half ended, the Kinsey to Gary combination clicked for 6 points. ln the last quarter, Fullback Jim Reese startled fans, coaches, teammates, and opponents by catching a 20 yard pass and outlirnping the Ocala eleven for 65 yards and paydirt, BOLLES 7-FLETCH ER l4 ln the final game of the season, the Cadets played their most outstanding game of the i947 season. The team hit hard and low, tackled viciously, and out- charged the Fletcher line. On one play Kinsey tackled Crews, that bruising full- back from the beach, so hard that he was a bit skeptical of the correct position of his teeth. Bud, on a line plunge, scored the only touchdown for the Cadets, The question will always remain in the minds of the team as to the legality of the legality of the second Fletcher score.
