Edward M Fee Ph D ,gf Lv ff With the passage of time, the maturity of our young men and women should make ap' parent to them that their basic education may be broadened, narrowed, and deepened. This is a realization common to the graduates of all schools at all levels There may be times in our rapidly changmg world when it will be necessary for graduates to take account of the direction of their development in order to grow symetrically A one dimensioned or a two dimensloned development would make an individual into a monstrosity Nature usually prevents this however nature often needs to be helped due to the conditions of modern hvmg The specialist broadens with his reading with travel with interests outside his field The broad individual must eventually narrow at some point due to the demands of the age He realizes that all breadth and little depth results in a shallow mdividual whose services have little demand Few people are really too deep However some people suspected of per sonality defects and of being cranks will be found here Extreme development of any kind is often unnatural and causes nature to prof test 1n some manner If you find yourself drift mg too far rn this direction try fishing instead of reading There is a lifetime ahead with a tendency towards a shorter work day and work week Avoid underestimating the value of small amounts of time available for self improve ment day to day week to week and year to year Time is a valuable asset to educated people It may be most important in shaping your life . 0 f I 0 . . . , . . , . . . . , . , 9 - 2 , . Taumc. or rn: Snnw Commercial Art plays an indispensable part in the conduct of modern business and industry. Keeping pace with the times, the commercial artist brings to our attention new, interesting, and useful products of our mod' ern age. The work embraces the design and execution of layouts, comprehensive and fin' ished drawings for advertising, e.g., booklets, trademarks, book jackets, magazine covers, illustrations, package and container designs. The commercial artist plans the lettering, creates and designs illustrations for window cards, posters, street car advertisements, and draws pictures which are so much more successful than words alone in describing merchandise in catalogs, magazines, and newspapers. Skill is developed in freehand drawing, design, composition, and layout, as well as in the various commercial and theatrical styles of lettering. The student studies newspaper, magazine, and trade paper layouts, fashion drawing, poster design, retouching, and both color and pen and ink work. He becomes familiar with the use of the air brush and other modern devices for the production of art displays and learns to execute work for specinc methods of reproduction. . . . want Such watercolors to impaint . . . The making of clothing has always been one of the chief occupations open to girls and women and still provides employment for thousands of them. To the girl who would like to earn her living this way the dressmaking course offers training in making and altering women's and children's clothing. To take this course, which is two years in length, a girl should have aptitude for sewing, skillful and a-ctive hands, and good eyesight. School work rooms are organized, as far as possible, like shop work rooms. The student learns standards of work, skill in handling tools and all materials used in the trade, as well as the relationship and responsibilities of worker to boss and boss to worker. She works on Cotton, wool, silk, velvet materials, etc., and learns to use commercial patterns, to draw patterns, and to do some draping. Instrucf tion is given in the cutting, Htting, and making of clothes in accordance with recognized dressmaking standards. During the first year of training, garments are all made stock size. In the second, they are made to Ht definite individuals, in the way they are made in a custom shop. Thus the student is given experience not only in putting together the parts of a garment, but in making alterations. See where she comes, apparell'd like the spring. . . The home economics curriculum is offered for two general purposes: First, it prepares girls for homemaking in recognition of the need for eflicient home management and the social importance of education for family life. Second, it prepares girls for paying positions, enabling them to earn a cash income until such a time as they wish to become homemakers. For this second objective, opportunities are available for the home economics pupils to specialize in foods or clothing. This course also enables girls not interested in specific trade to develop traits most valuable to an employer seeking someone to be trained on the job. Emphasis is first placed on the girl herself, her personal problems of grooming, health and behavior. Problems of living in the home follow, including child study, care of the house, furnishing, entertaining, managing, and family relationships. The wise use of leisure, consumer buying and home nursing are also included. In clothing classes the selection, consctruction and care of personal and family clothing are all considered. In foods classes the planning, preparation and serving of meals is stressed. Oppor- tunity is also given to practice quantity cookery, by preparing foods for sale and by paid cooperative work in the student cafeteria. Cooperative employment also may be arranged in other related fields, if the student so desires, in her last year. Demonstration techniques are a part of the course. Each student is required to demonstrate the preparation of food, the operation of a piece of household equipment, and some phase of clothing construction. In the last year vocational guidance aims to help the girls solve future occupational and personal problems. How now, mine lady the hostess, What sayest thou to me? There are few of our modern conveniences that do not reflect the skillful workmanship of machinists. Machinists help to make and assemble refrigerators, automobiles, airplanes, typewriters, and other machines and their parts. They are the men who take the rough castings made in the foundry and do the necessary fine work and machining to prepare them for the final assembly in the completed machine. To do this important work, these craftsmen must be skillful in the operation of various machine tools, such as lathes, shapers, grinders, and milling machines. Their work calls for a high degree of hand skill in' finishing and assembling parts. The program of the machine shop practice course enables the student to acquire the basic skills and knowledge essential to a wellftrained, allfaround machinist. The school shops are equipped with the kinds of machines used in industry. From the beginning, the student operates these machines in the making of practical and useful metal objects. His training involves work on the bench, lathes, shapers, milling machines, grinders, and drills. lt also includes precision work on hne machine tools, practice in exacting hand work, and the study of metals, their composition, strength, methods of machining and heat treatment. Since the machinist must carry out the idea of the designer exactly, blue print reading, layout of machine parts, and the making of mathematical calculations becomes a necessary part of the student's training. The entire job, whether it is a recovering, reupholstering or the creation of an entirely new piece of furniture is done in Mr. Davis' shop. The training received by the boys in their course includes an appreciation of the various styles and periods of furniture design and their applications to the modern interiors. The applied arts and drafting are also inf cluded as part of the instruction for those who have chosen the upholstering trade. 1 will fashion it. . .
