any W fri We:-Zh if 'S 3 Q Aa, Z.. The mountains were lmefore the pioneers, waiting to he conquered. The land lay in the wilderness, Waiting for the men who would weld and sh lr into a city. The tirm steps of the first Walked over the Appalaehians into the sleeping Valleys, the fertile valleys Where their dreams might he fulfilled. They scramlmled across the ice-fed rivers and pushed their way among the Wooded slopes and heyond to the rolling prairies, where the waving grasses Stretched long lingers to the wind, and Where the dark earth lay waiting For the clean wound of the sharp-edged plow. The prairies were cleared and the soil rippled into long furrows hehind .-X mule and a man. Cities sprang up to service, the prairie lost its wilderness, and the Pioneer looked to the misty pillars of evening where the mountains slept Blue mountains with white crowns upon their naked heads, mountains that Stood in grim silence, waiting for a special lwreed of man to twist a trail .-Xround their feet, climli their stone-laid crests into the foaming clouds That swirled around their hrows. And they did come. NVith groaning wagons and straining oxen. hlen and women Yvith streaked faces and gaunt liodies. lXlen and women with a vision. They climlied the Rockies and poured into the valleys lweyond. The desert could not stop their search: the colossal forests were lwut A resting place for these pioneers. They could not lie content until livery mountain was conquered and every river had lieen crossed. They could not rest until they had gained the limits ofthe land and Heard the thundering chords of a restless ocean. Their eyes looked in vain for new lands to win. Their pilgrimage was ended. Some say that their spirit died there, on The shore of that ma-iestic ocean. Some say there is nothing more to seek. But others look over and lieyond the Pacific and feel the pioneer spirit .-Xnd know that it is not dead, liut alive in the hearts of the brave. For they seek a conquest and a trophy that remains in this land- .-X dream that is as rich as the earth they planted, as free and as vilirant As the wind-stroked prairie and the mute desert, as nolile as the thrusting River, and as strong in character as the granite mountain.
