Iuniors of 1940! They whistled through their sophomore year. They zoomed to greater heights when they became second year men. Tiny Donny Day presided over the huge class and has done a commendable job. Assisting him were Mary Wilcomb, vice-president, Dick Lunstrum, secretary, and Franklin Smith, treasurer. Marion Sullivan and Francis Fitzgerald as student repre- sentatives did their part in the administration of our student government. Miss Helen Moore and Mr. Fay Robinson were class advisers. Warren Farmer, Norma Field, Donny Day, Mary Wilcomb, and Bill Eberle were appointed to choose the class rings. Kay Keyser and His Kollege of Musical Knowledge invaded the auditorium for the class' annual assembly. Mary Lou Estelle was chairman of the Iunior-Senior Prom held April 20. Last year as ninth graders we would watch the activities of the Big High School with awe and wonder, but it did not take us long last fall to become a part of these activities. The political organization of this class was somewhat disrupted when Tim Barry president, moved to Portland at the end of the first semester, but Phyllis Field, vice- president, capably took over the office. Qther officers were Deva Chisholm, secretaryg Bob Vaught, treasurer. Patty Ann Oxley and Bob Barbour were student council rep- resentatives. 1 ln sports we sophomores excelled. We went through both football and basketball undefeated and gave promise of excellent material for varsity. The sophomores pre' sented the first class assembly of the year. We have taken an enthusiastic and energetic role in classes, clubs, and sports. lt's lots of fun being in the l'Big High School. Yes, and that's just what they did to the R.O.T.C. Complete reorganization was realized in the Boise High School unit at the tirst of the year under the direction ot Captain Pitzer. There was no more drudgery of squad movements and more time was devoted to theoretical training and extended order. When Major Philip Doddridge came to take command at the second semester, changes in the commanding unit were made. Another change came with the decision to have tive sponsors instead of an honorary cadet major. Peggy Brigham was chosen battalion sponsor. Helen Ganz was sponsor tor Company Ang Mary Wilcomb, Company B g Mary Lou Estelle, Company CHQ and Charlotte Gianunzio, Company Governor's Day on May 8 not only began test week tor the soldiers, but assured everyone that l939-40 had been a successful pioneering year for the Boise High School R.O.T.C. Governor Bottoltsen reviewed the 250 boys on parade. COMPANY ' 'A COMPANY C' N R. o COMPANY D T. C. Captain lohn H. Pitzer made a lasting impression in Boise Hi with the organization of the Pershing Rifles. Boise High School has the distinction of being the first junior unit in the United States to have this national organization. The Pershing Rifles takes the place of the former Corps Crrenadiers. Officers, elected by its GO members, were: captain, Martin Fry, first lieutenant, Sumner Alpertg first lieutenant, Bill Sproat, and second lieutenant, Robert Mitchell. Carl Otto was appointed first sergeant and Roy Arnold carried the company guidon. An inspection was held April lst, with Colonel Meyers from the University of ldaho the inspecting officer. They participated in the entertainment of the Crossed Rifle Ball. New sights on the rifles probably had much to do with the improvement of the rifle team. Fifteen members were chosen instead of ten, as in previous years. Richard Buck was high scorer of the year and won the Dr. P. G. Flack Rifle Marksrnanship Award. Page 65 Well known to the entire community is this splendid orchestra Boise High is mighty proud SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Playing with amazing skill and artistry, 65 musicians of Boise High School followed the baton of Franklin l-lolsinger with the dexterity of professionals. Proof of the popularity of the Symphony Crchestra was the many programs on which the group was invited to appear. Among these occasions were the District Teachers' Convention, P.T.A. programs, l'David Copperfield, Memorial Services for Senator Borah, Music Week, Baccalaureate and Commencement exercises. One of the orchestra's most delightful performances was its accompaniment to the lilting songs of The Red Mill. DANCE ORCHESTRA Page 66 Acclaimed as the best dance orchestra Boise High has ever had, this group has played for formals, matinee dances and assemblies. These boys were received with thunderous applause at the Nampa exchange program. The band's appearances included football games, a trip to Caldwell, Utah-Idaho football game, National Brotherhood Week, Music Week, District Music Festival, pre- mier of Northwest Passage, Governor's Day Review, and its spring concert May 5. An innovation was the addition of drum majorettes: Edythe Nokleby, Dorothy Kalbus, Carolyn Lyman, and Lorraine Johnson. Whit Wilson was drum major assisted by the two tall blond Eberle boys, Bill and Ted. Franklin Holsinger was band leader. PEPBAND The stirring notes of martial music, the bright flash of instruments, the crimson of sweaters, make the Boise High School Pep Band full worthy of its name. With spirit and enthusiasm these boys, under the able leadership of student director Chuck lensen, have played their vigorous tunes through football and basketball seasons. They have added their bit to numerous programs and assemblies. Trips to Pocatello and Caldwell with the basketball team proved that Boise has a Pep Band hard to beat, and one that is a credit to its faculty supervisor, Franklin Holsinger. A paper was written and published by the members, edited by Marshall Everheart. A display case for obiects connected with Roman times was planned and built. The club participated in the International Banquet program. Titles of officers were taken from the ancient magistrates. They were Mary Beall and Frances Hall, Consuls, Mar- gery Potter, Praetor, and Helen Howard, Quaestor. Miss Maryann Hogarth was the adviser. This club proves that Latin is not a dead language Le Cercle Francais The organization for all students taking French is Le Cercle Francais, or, in our language, the French Club. Anyone tak- ing second year French or having taken French for two years or more is eligible for membership. Monthly meetings were held during class as a part of the class work. Early in the year the club pur- chased a bust of Victor Hugo, a pleasing addition to the French collection in room l23. Officers were Margaret Guthman, president, Maryann Wood, vicepresi- dent, Whit Wilson, secretary-treasurer. Miss Emma G. Simmons was the adviser. These French club members know their language well 1 Como Esta Ud. ? Thus do the members of the Spanish Club greet each other at their bi-monthly meetings. Officers were Isabel layo, president, Carmen Bilboa, vicefpresident, Stama- tina Varkas, secretary, Betty Armstrong, treasurer, and Glenn Seibel, program chairman. Club adviser was Valora Blackburn. This club makes Spanish a fascinating subject Page 80 Book-Lenders Seventeen Boise High School girls, under the leadership of Miss Helen Miller, school librarian, have helped to make our library both a helpful and an enjoyable source ot reference and rec- reational reading this year. The 'e girls who were enrolled in a course in library Economy have occasional statt meetings during advisory periods for instruction and discussion. Each girl works for a period daily in the library, her duties rotating from desk to floor to magazine room work. This arrangement lends an interesting variety to the course and gives a more varied experience. On the library staff are many efficient workers Potential Pressmen High school students working on either of the two school publications are elig- ilole to try tor the Quill and Scroll, lnternational Honorary Society for High School lournalists. Much of this efficiency was due to the orderlies and the many duties they performed. They not only collected absence slips and made the record chart of absentees, but they also phoned or wrote your home to determine the reason for your absence. From third floor to basement, from the high school building to the gym, rain or shine, these girls ran errands and deliv- ered messages. Miss Clara Otness was supervisor. The order-lies kept close track of absences and tardies Hall Checks Another week gone by and few com- plaints of theft or lost articles, Mr. Seth Freer and Miss Clara Otness could say each Friday this year because their monitors were on the job. Complete rec- ords of the passage of students from the halls to lockers or cloak rooms were kept by these alert workers. By this method lost and found or stolen articles were easily located. Sitting at the hall table with books and a study light, the monitor is a familiar figure to every high school student. The Monitors are the guard- ians of the halls Scene Shifters When the house lights were dimmed, the curtains drawn, and the stage ree vealed, the S.tVf.S. boys were on the job behind the scenes.
