A 4, 1 fl' 1 1 6 Halls teeming with busy students, classrooms and grounds swarming with smiling faces, Public School Held and gym crowded with enthu- siastic sport fans: these are the phases of school and student life not soon forgotten by those Who leave Boise high school. VVe hope that the last school year has been filled With all the enjoyable moments that it could contain, thereby making it one of the happiest in your life. Friendships formed in the happy hustle of the day's Work Will be life- long memories in the hearts of those departing from our Alma lVlater. This book was written to keep these memories alive and to make it possible to recall the laughter, joy and sincerity of school life. There are many persons around Boise high school to whom this year's COVRIER could be worthily dedicated. But since not all deserving ones can be included, the staff felt it wished to oger what honor it can to the one person who represents perhaps just 21 little more of our school than any other. Mr. John Sawyer, now completing his thirty-first year as science teacher in B.H.S., is the oldest instructor in point of service on the faculty. Numbered among his pupils for many years have been students whose parents have also been his pupils. Although he has seen countless students come and go, he has never lost his interest in watching pupils learn. He has maintained always an unfailing kindness and courtesy with young and old alike. 'PHE COURIER does not intend even to guess how many students Mr. Sawyer has had in all his classes during his years here, but it is certain that all of them are better citizens than they would have been had they not come in Contact with him. For these and many other reasons, THE COURIER is happy to dedicate this 1939 edition to the dean of Boise high school's faculty, Mr. John Sawyer. JACK PERKINS, Editor 1939 Courier. Miss Margaret Sinclair was faculty adviser, having taken over this duty in the middle of the preceding year. During the year a finance hudget committee was appointed to discuss and decide on the different cluhs' and organizations' hudgets. Principal Zed I.. Foy was its adviser. The student hody elected lian Archahal vice-president, Don Swan secretary, Helen Ganz treasurer, and Jimmy Charrier corresponding secretary of the student hody. Class representatives on the council were Roh Gilmore and XVarren Farmer, sophomores, Joe Lfheruaga and Bill Sproat, juniors, and Charles Crowe and Bud Tompkins, seniors. This group, as the students' representatives, promotes and assists in all school atlairs which are a part of our school life. These students always conducted themselves as true representatives of the student hody. r QEI3 Mu 1439 THIRTI-:EN lilrsx' l,Ass1Es Aldecoa, Hallstrom, Robertson, Nlalnati Qlzfni Chr! l'iI1QH'I' HlfNDRl'1l7 Pl-1I'l'Y 1JAMs1el,s created so much student life that no yearbook would he complete without a record of the activities of the Girls' clulm. Guiding the affairs of this federation of all girls was the calvinet, with Lois Malnati president, tludith Hallstrom vice-president, Virginia Robertson, secretary, and Carmen :Xldecoa treasurer. Representatives among the juniors were Peggy Brigham, Betty Mathews, Nancy Roluinson and Murial Rogers. Selected from sophomores were Marion Sullivan, Dorothy Kallmus, Phyllis Yllakeman and Patricia Scovell. Miss Clara Otness was advisor. Outstanding among the group's activities was the Big Sister movement, placed in the capalwle hands of Helen Caine and Marcia Gwinn. lnterests of the incoming girls from junior high were alvly taken care of. Next the girls participated in the annual forget-me-not drive, which was won by the sophomore girls. And nothing could heat those hot dogs on a cold, windy day at a pigskin game so generously sold lwy the Girls, cluln. An excellent scholarship assemlily, the annual co-ed hall, which was proclaimed a success, numerous school assemlnlies for the lueautifying ofthe fair sex, and lmaslcets for the needy were only a small part of these lnusy girls' activities. The lovely Honor Girl dance with the stately May Pole ceremony ended the affairs of this organization, to he the last for 215 senior girls. This climaxed a full year's work hy George Lenfest president, Bill Sproat vicespresident, Joe Uheruaga secretary, and Chuck Crowe treasurer. A new activity of the unior and senior lioys was given its start, in the form of a tug- o'-war, sponsored hy the lfederation. Held at Julia Davis lagoon April io, the lxattle was fairly fought with the result heing a draw. The rope hroke three times lmefore the seniors were pulled through the mud and water. However, the juniors were on their way to a good ducking the first three times when the rope broke. The annual Christmas dance was held this year December 17. Chuck Crowe was gen- eral chairman. First on the program was the annual Boise-Nampa rally, which was held previous to the hig foothall game between the two rivals. A Thanksgiving hasket drive for needy families was sponsored hy the group. When the students of this senior class were back in the second and third grades they con- tributed their pennies and nickels to help buy the lot on which the new gym stands, hoping that when they would Finally reach Boise Hi they might have a new gym. But they had been disappointed, for when they entered B.H.S. as freshmen there was only the old gym. Their wish was granted when they moved to the sophomore class, for on that lot which they helped to buy grew the biggest and best constructed high school gym in the state of Idaho. Outstanding among their classmates were: Chris Alexander, student body president, Daniel Archabal, vice-president, Donald Swan, secretary, Judith Hallstrom, senior class president, Dick Armstrong, vice-president, Virginia Robertson, secretary, James Thrailkill, treasurer, Jean Beck, president of the Girls' Athletic association, Lois Malnati, Girls' club president, George Lenfest, Boys' Federation president, Lois Hulser and Bernice Heisner, editors of the HIGH LIGHTS, Jack Perkins, editor of THE COURIERQ John McMahon, major of the R.O.T.C., Anne Winstead, president of the Scarlet Skirts. Dick Armstrong was also president of the B club. The class of '39 has had a very successful career while in Boise Hi, taking an active part in all activities of the school, including sports, dances, assemblies, HIGH LIGHTS, COURIER, music, dramatics, and other school organizations. Stage Door, by Kaufman and Ferber, a three-act play released just this year for amateur production, was the class' final contribution to Boise high school. Presented May 26, it proved successful with a cast of 30 seniors, I9 girls and II boys. The cast was supported by ticket, publicity and properties committees made up of senior students. Elizabeth Walker headed the publicity committee, Rachel Branson, properties, and Cornelia Her- zinger, tickets. Doris Vining as Terry Randall took the girls' lead and Darrell Beetham as Keith Burgess the boys' lead. Senior boys were the mainstays in the field of sports, football, basketball and track being major activities. April I9 was the date for the annual senior dress-up day. A new innovation this year was a tug-o'-War across the lagoon at Julia Davis park between junior and Senior boys. A rope which would stand 9,ooo pounds of strain was used, but broke three times. On the fourth try, with a doubled rope and juniors on the long end, the entire Senior line was dragged across the twenty-three feet of mud and water. Senior sneak day came May 8. This was the Hnal day of fun for the seniors before com- mencement, May 29. ,f Adams, N. Anderson, R. Baker, C. Acorda, G. Anderson, L. Bailes, C. Barrett, hl. N 'Q I fd' '51 - xt, x I Baumchen, C. Perkins, P. 0l39 CLASSES Q Q'-L :X V I 1 'lx 5 V MANY sUccEssFUL DAYS are ahead of the up and coming class of '40 if their record set as juniors is maintained in the next year. The pep and enthusiasm of the class as a whole in supporting school activities was very helpful to the administration in all school affairs the year through. Junior class leaders showed remarkable ability in heading all things in which they were asked to participate. Many of the juniors were especially outstanding in scholastic and social affairs sponsored by the city and school. Following the dictates of custom, the juniors again played host to the seniors and put on one of the most beautiful junior-senior proms that the school has ever known. Prom committees were made up entirely ofjuniors. Childhood memories were brought to mind when the juniors put on their annual assembly. The theme Little Black Sambon made 21 great hit with the entire student body. Again this was entirely a junior class affair. The stronger sex of the class of ,4O battled to a muddy draw with the seniors in the first of what is hoped to be an annual affair, the junior-senior tug-o'-war, on senior dress-up day. Class officers were Peggy Brigham, president, Bernie Baker, vice-president, Bob Trask, secretary, Betty Mathews, treasurer, and Bill Sproat and Joe Uberuaga, representatives. Many juniors rated tops in various extra-curricular activities. Martin Frye, Robert Mitchell and Sumner Alpert were initiated into the honor R.O.T.C. corps, the Corps Grenadiers. Many outstanding athletes came from the class in football, basketball, tennis, track and golf. The class ring committee was made up of Peggy Ginzel, john Kepros, Jack Dana, Kenneth Bergquist and Rose Mateovich. Junior girls who were active in the Girls' club were Nancy Robinson secretary, Muriel Rogers treasurer, Peggy Brigham, president, and Betty Mathews vice-president. A good number ofjunior girls made up the membership of the high school's famous pep club, the Scarlet Skirts. The yell king, Bernie Baker, a real pep-spreader, was a junior. Bob Pratt, yell duke, also came from the junior class. Angie Madarieta, George Miller and Bob Pyper represented the junior hoys in the Boys' federation. Bill Sproat served as federation vice-president. Of course, no class could function with success without the help of their advisers. This year Miss Dorothy Lenfest and Mr. W. H. Van Zee were the capable faculty leaders for this progressive class. anion BERNIE BAKER, Vice-president BETTY MATHEWS, Treasurer PEGGY Blum-mM, President Bos TRASK, Secretary 4 I I ' 7'-, ag. -. .,.: We Li .Y c ,sv FV' I I -H can A. NIIIIX mln, sz. my 50 A0l44.0'C64 THE CLASS or ,4I having completed its first year in this great institution has learned much Since the beginning of the year when they entered as the first group from Boise's new junior high school. This class will be put down in Boise high school history as one of the most outstanding sophomore classes in school activities. Officers were Francis Fitzgerald president, Pat Scovell vice-president, Betty Armstrong Secretary, and Helen Hendren treasurer. Bob Gilmore and VVarren Farmer represented the Sophs in the Student council. Class advisers were Mrs. Claire B. Bracken and Mr. Fay C. Robinson. The sophomore girls proved their school spirit in the annual forget-me-not drive for the benefit ofthe disabled veterans by having the greatest number of names from their class on the list of those who had sold during the day. Because of their work in this project, the sophomore girls will sponsor the co-ed ball next year. Marian Sullivan, president of the sophomore girls, was in charge of making arrangements for the sale. Other oflicers of the sophomore girls are Dorothy Kalbus vice-president, Phyllis Wake- man secretary, and Patricia Scovell treasurer. The sophomore assembly, featuring Ferdinand the Bull, was put on under the able direction of Ray Wagoner. Kenneth Lemon assisted in announcing the numbers on the program. In thejournalistic department, many sophomores were extremely active. Gloria Williams was senior editor of THE COURIER. Active on the HIGH LIGHTS were Helen Howard, Rose Lessinger, Ruth Roberts, and Gloria VVilliamS. Such an up and coming class as this one is bound to play bigger and better roles in the halls of Boise Hi. The Braves won the state championship in 1924 and 1938 lmut lost in the hnals this year when a Blackfoot man shot a goal in an overtime period to take the state finals. During the entire season the Braves won 27 games and lost 5. Total seasonls score was 1127 points to their opponents 765. The highest scorer of the season was Darrel Parente, flashy senior forward, with a total of 270 points to his credit. Harland Storey, tall center, looped 214 points, and Don Duncan, 198 points. Two of the boys were chosen for the all-state team: Darrel Parente as forward and Don Duncan as guard. Harland Storey was selected for the second team center. At the state tournament the warriors defeated ldaho Falls 32 to 22 and Pocatello 46 to 27, but in the finals they were forced to how their heads, in the overtime period, to Blackfoot, 25 to 23. The other four games lost were all during the barn-storming tour. On the first night, the warriors lost to Rupert 2l to 19, on the second and third nights to Pocatello 40 to 25 and 37 to 33. ln Parente, Sandner Thomas, Collins, Eby Oli? 'fe ww 5..4.fr.zz these two games the Pocatello Indians got revenge on the Braves for the two defeats handed to them earlier in the season. The boys had won the first game by one point, 40 to 39, and the second game ended with the Braves out in front 27 to 22. The Braves, as you have already been told, dished the Indians of Pocatello their third defeat in the state meet. On the fourth night of the tour the Braves were again defeated this time by Idaho Falls with the gun ending the game at 27 to 32. But the Braves got their revenge for this defeat by winning from them in the state meet. Only four of the ten boys representing Boise in the district and state meets will return next year: Robert Eytchison, Tom Collins, VVilliam Sproat, and Frank Sandner. Those graduated this year include Donald Duncan, Darrel Parente, Harland Storey, James Thomas, Ervin Talhoy, and Eugene Eby. Schools that fell before the fast pace of the Braves were Buhl, Vale, Ontario, Caldwell, Emmett, Pocatello, Nampa, Meridian, VVeiser, Payette, Mountain I-Iome, and Idaho Falls. Coach Darwin K. The combined squads of the senior and junior high schools totalled the record turnout of IOQ. Opening competition was confined to the annual interclass track and field meet. The senior boys ran away with first place while the sophomores came in a close second. Out- standing men on the upperclass and sophomore teams were carefully watched for varsity competition. In order for the coaches to select the final track squad a tri-city meet was held between Boise, Nampa, and Caldwell. The Braves rampaged to an easy victory, leaving their opponents in the dust. Several weeks later when the team was chosen they entered the sub-district meet held at Public School field. In the field of nine competitive schools Boise proceeded to top all scores and easily took Hrst place. The following week the Braves went to Caldwell for the district meet. After a very close finish the Braves lacked IM points of capturing the trophy, losing to the Emmett Huskies. TRACK SQUAD FOR 1939 . . . 88o Peterson . . . Keeping up . . . High hurdles . . . The medley relay team of Dick Burnett, Bob Erter, Junior Peterson and Roy Jeager chopped two seconds off the state relay record. Two meets Were held, at Moscow and Pocatello, on the same day, thus replacing the single state meet. Many of Boise's tracksters made outstanding performances in their appearances on the Cinder path. lVlarvin Osborn drew much praise from local coaches as well as visitors. His speedy legs carried him to near-record time in both low and high hurdles events. Bob Turner, who injured his leg at the close ofthe season, established himself as a speed demon by his performance in the IOO-yllfd dash. Dwight Frye, a sophomore, showed outstanding ability in all the track events which he entered. Dean Fitzwater, who graduates this year, also turned in some nice races. Among this group of boys who so loyally supported the coaches and the school there are many more who deserve special mention, but due to lack of space all we can say is that everyone on the team did their best to make this one of Boise high school's most successful years in athletic competition.
