No longer do their cries ring out through the night nor their fires glimmer along the river banks. But their War cry is echoed in the voices of the Boise high school Brave and his sguawg their valor is displayed on fields of athletic combatg their talent is carried on in music, art and literature-5 and their spirit lives in the hearts of l5OO students. ln l938 the Boise Brave added many scalps to his belt, on the gridiron he showed himself supreme and the state basketball cham- pionship was gained by his prowess. His life was not all battlesg he also spent much time in study for the future. He gave himself time for social affairs so that he reached the end of the year a better alleround individual. On these pages you Will find the record of his activities . . . some in the sign language of pictures, some in the language of writing which the modern Indian has learned. New curtains for the gym and high school auditorium and cement tor the new tennis courts were purchased as part of the work of the student council during the past year. Thus the student council conquered many obstacles that arose during the year under the able supervision of Donald Galbreaith president and his council, including Roberta Rodgers vice president, Dorothy Ccon secretary, Dick Armstrong treasurer and George Lentest corre- sponding secretary. From the classes came representatives, among whom were lack Dunaway and Betty McDonald sophomores, ludy l-lallstrom and Chris Alexander juniors and Bob Day and Wayne Peterson seniors. The annual custom ot decorating a huge Christmas tree in the main hall was again managed by the council, helping to carry out the yuletide spirit ot the students. Acting as the executive group of the school government, this group met and solved many problems of students and the student-body with the assistance of Miss Margaret Sinclair, who at mid-year took over Miss Karen Kieldsen's duties as advisor ot the council. Boise high school girls carried on a heavy schedule of work this year which included a scholar- ship assembly, a co-ed ball, and several senior activities. Elizabeth Yriondo successfully headed the cabinet ot twelve girls with the help ot Miss Clara Qtness, dean ot girls. Helen Marr Archibald was vice president, Dorothy Coon secretary and Bonnie lean lennings treasurer. For one week all Boise high studes went Harlem, with canes and derbies, sold in the dean's ottice just betore the tinal basketball game with Nampa. The co-ed ball, co-chairmaned by Ruth Ann Cahoon and Lois Peterson, carried the theme, Dear Diary. Sophomores won the prize tor the best stunt with an automobile act. Even though there were no treshmen, the Hbig sister movement was carried on tor new girls in high school with Lucille Laubaugh as head. There was also a big sister tea where the new girls were helped to get acquainted. The junior otticers were Tudy Hallstrom, Lois Malnati, Rosemary Reed and Carmen Aldecoa. Sophomore otticers Betty Matthews, Harriette Driscoll, Claire Bracken and Maryanne Ken- nedy had charge ot candy selling at the state basketball tournament. Elinore Finch headed the annual scholarship assembly. Honor girls and the most popular boy were elected. As the representatives of all the boys of Boise high school, the Boys' federation has done much to add to school life. Such customs as giving baskets on Thanksgiving and Christmas were again carried out by this group, headed by Charles Lenfest president, Vern McGowan vice president, Chris Alex- ander secretary and Wayne E. Peterson treasurer. The federation put on its annual rally before the Nampa-Boise football game. The formal Christmas dance, with its beautiful decorations, carried out the yuletide theme. Every boy in Boise high school is a member of the federation, while each class chooses its own representatives to meet in a councilg each to discuss the problems and needs of all the boys and to promote good feeling among the classes. Through the efforts of the federation much interest has been shown in school activities and it made many progressive steps toward bettering the school. This organization is one of the main factors in the administration of Boise high's student body and contributes much to its pep and good sportsmanship, as well as helping boys to accustom themselves to their three years of senior high school life. Page 13 Seth Freer, Dean of Boys Clara Otness, Dean of Girls Page 14 rqcffnzlnuhalian . . Boise high school lite has moved in the same well-ordered and regulated paths this year as in past years. Again, the credit must go to the school administration: Zed L. Foy principal, Seth T. Freer dean ot boys, and Miss Clara Otness dean ot girls. Students have an initiative type ot government, as their activities are governed by the ettorts they expend, but a great deal ot the planning passes through the hands ot these three. Mr. Foy heads the taculty group. lt is his duty to make arrangements tor assemblies during school hours and to schedule school attairs tor the evening. The task ot visiting incoming students and explaining the procedures ot enrollment was lightened considerably this year by absence ot a treshman class, due to the new junior high. Mr. Freer's ready wit aided him constantly in his supervision ot a study hall, detention and noon study groups . . . all of which were his specialduties. l-le acted in an advisory capacity to boys Wishing employment and to those whose work was unsatisfactory, and had charge ot delinguents. Miss Qtness, in the position ot dean ot girls, served as adviser to the Girls' club, an organi- zation made up ot all the girls in the school. She was also chairman ot the taculty social com- mittee. Grderlies, another group ot great service to the school, were also under her direction. Zed L. Fey, Principal affix... What if you want to enroll, deposit money into the student body fund, put a notice in the daily bulletin, make an appointment with the principal, or send a message to a student in room 337? Or take out a handful of tickets to sell for the next Dramatic club play? These are only a few of the multitudes of details that somebody in a large high school has to be responsible for. Mrs. Alice Smith, registrar, has been taking care of enrollments for so long that she can do it almost automatically. She knows more about each individual's scholastic record than any dozen other persons put together. Miss Hazel Hotchkiss receives deposits to student body funds, and does the mimeographing-ea to mention only a few of her duties. Miss Ruth Herbert, '37, is the efficient infant of the office force. And as to delivering messages, there are girls known as orderlies who take care of endless errands and other small but necessary jobs. Across the hall from the main office, Mr. l. E. Six' commanding figure stands guard over the financial affairs of the student body. lf you know your business, these office workers are pleasant and helpful. They are the oil that makes the machinery of school life run smoothly. Hubert, Office Staff J. E. What it Boise high should wake up some morning with a completely new set ot teachers, all the way from benign, veteran Mr. lohn Sawyer clown to the petite Misses Dorothy Lentest and Grace lohn' ston? lt can't happen, ot course. But maybe the thought brings out more vividly the part the faculty plays in school lite. Most of these teachers have been here much longer than any student. They have their varied interests but all are interested in helping students. They have a lot to do with making school lite what it is . . . and it is, after all, a happy lite. - - --f---A-- -. un. .J--denim mr, orraiqnt Qacuf Most Boise high school teachers have been here a number of years. Yet each year there are changes. During the past year two teachers departed in the middle ot the year. Mr. Donald Foltz, Vocal music instructor, was called to a tine position in Detroit. Miss Karen Kield- sen went away after Christmas. Mr. Howard Deye, instrumental music teacher, resigned last summer to accept a position at Ellens- burg, Washington. Captain Eugene R. Guild, R.O.T.C. instructor, was transferred. The school extends to these teachers the best of wishes. Their work will be remembered many long years. Virginia Rhea, secretary Vern McGowan, president Valerie Delena, treasurer Bill Anderson, v ce president The largest class ever to graduate from Boise high school are now preparing to walk across the stage as students for the last time. Four busy and happy years have sped by since they entered the school as inexperienced freshmen. During those years the class of l938 made a place for itself in school activities. Vern McGowan president, Bill Anderson vice president, Virginia Rhea secretary, and Valerie Delana treasurer led the class in its final year at Boise high. On the athletic field, in the classroom, on the stage, in the pressroom and in the orchestra pit class members displayed their ability. Graduating seniors were largely responsible for bringing the state basketball championship cup to Boise for the first time in 14 years, and they led the football team to top rank in the Big Ten championship race. Donald Galbreaith was chosen student body president. Two other student offices fell to seniors, the vice presidency to Roberta Rodgers and the secretaryship to Dorothy Coon. Eliza- beth Yriondo was president of the Girls' club, Charles Lenfest headed the Boys' federation and Mildred McDowell controlled activities of the Cr.A.A. Lucille Laubaugh led the big sisters. Elizabeth Bracken and Dick Mathison served as editors of the l-ligh Lights. Bill Hart edited the Courier. Ted McCutcheon was R.C.T.C. major. Though the vacancies will be filled, many a senior will be sorely missed when school begins next fall. Meanwhile, to college, to work, to far-off places scatter the class of '38 seeking new fields to conquer. Pag 21 ABBOTT, MARIE Boise Valleyview l-25 Span. To lead them they chose Lois Malnati president, Chris Alexander vice president, Bernice Perry secretary and Charles Crowe treasurer. Cn the student council ludith Hallstrom and Chris Alexander shone as their representatives. Class advisors were Miss Barnes and Mr. Chindgren. The first honor of the year was the selection of lunior Peterson as yell king. luniors were well represented on the football team and also in basketball and track. ln debate, dramatics, the minor sports and other activities, they proved their ability to carry on traditions. On the Courier and High Lights the juniors were represented by Lois Hulser, managing editor of the High Lights the first semesterg and Bernice Heisner, also managing editor the second semester, and a great many more. lack Perkins was appointed editor of next year's Courier. Twelve of the 33 honor girls were juniors and one of the ten most popular boys was also in this class. At the lunior-Senior Prom the seniors were royally entertained in the new gym, which was transformed into a little bit of Holland. Co-chairman of this affair were Dick Armstrong and Lois Malnati. And so the juniors leave these halls to return next year to get a little more knowledge and a great deal more sophistication as seniors. 3 Charles Crowe, trea Chris Alexander, vi president Lois Malnati, president - V'k. iHg.,,. gi .- sl 4 .. xg 1 li- , Ml, gm Jin.. 2 ' -..-, wsseesf. . Four sophomore boys had the honor of being elected among the ten most popular boys of Boise high school. They were Werner Stern, George Miller, Angie Madarieta and loe Uberuaga. ln sports the sophomores were represented on every field. ln football, basketball, track and tennis they received their share of the glory that came to the Boise Braves. This class lived up to the standards of Boise high and has aided in the desire to uphold its traditions. When they first started as freshmen they were greeted by a school that was growing and needed their help. Now at the end of their second year they have contributed much to the spirit of Boise high school. There is no stopping these soptomores. luniors next year and if the seniors are-n't snappy they will have their toes trampled on all year long by this up and coming sophomore class. Band officers were Don Sprague president, Emilio Aldecoa vice president, Margaret Bachel- ler secretary-treasurer and Ralph Peters, Scott Scholffman and Ernest Stephens representatives. 5 0 With the bowing of fiddles learned, horns polished up and some of their scales forgotten the symphony orchestra started out a most successful year. Under the baton of Franklin l-lolsinger, the orchestra accompanied the operetta 'lPinafore to a brilliant climax. Music week was also one of the highlights of their year of playing. The sixty-five members of the orchestra climaxed their season with a concert April 30 to a pleased audience. Maybe that's a tair slogan tor the staff ot Boise high's newspaper, the High Lights, tor the past year. lt lazy reporters waited till Thursday to write stories that could have been done Tuesday, the paper went out without those stories. lt editors got a spell ot spring fever once in a while, Editor Elizabeth Brack- en the tirst semester and Editor Dick Mathison the second did the hard-boiled crack-down in a hurry and got things moving again. However, lazy stait members were tew indeedg and they didn't last long. Pub- lishing a newspaper is a lot of hard and particular work, members discovered, So, only the really industrious ones held their positions. Cover the news brietly, thoroughly, snappily. That's what the statt aimed to do . . . and did, most ot the time. Business managers were Louise Eide the iirst semester, Charles Macauley the second. Managing editors: Lois Hulser tirst semester, Bernice Heisner second. Advertising was so heavy the first semester that on tour occasions the statt was able to publish six-page editions instead ot the conventional four. Headlines were considerably revised the second semester. The Htlush-left style was brought back atter more than seven years' lapse . . . the High Lights being probably the iirst newspaper in the United States to adopt it, in the tall ot l93l. 'This means a statt ot veterans next year and a territic job ot selecting per- sons ior the main positions, with such a wealth of fine material, said Dwight Mitchell, advisor. Unsung heroes are the boys who make up the paper. They prepare the type from the linotype, set up heads for all stories, prepare mats for the advertise- ments and do an all-around job of get- ting the paper together. Then the paper must be run off and sent to the folding room. All this the print shop sees to, which is a week's job in itself. Then there's those ad chasers who make it possible for the merchants of Boise to advertise in the l-ligh Lights as well as providing an income to produce the paper. Floyd Dyer was ad manager first semester and Charles Link second semester. Exchanges were in order again this year. Papers from all over North Amer- ica were found in the stack of exchanges that came nearly every day of the week. Dwight Mitchell, journalism teacher, is the advisor of the future newspaper men and women. ln any emergency he is ready to take anyones place who might have gotten just a little tired. Girls who otherwise would not be able to compete among themselves, thereby get essential exercise, helping to make a more varied program in their school life. Knowledge of the several minor sports help them in future times. Also one of the most important factors in life is taught, that of sportsmanship, which is needed wherever one goes. Girls' track was enjoyed by many girls, who went out for the broad jump, high jump, hop, skip and jump. For running exercises the fifty-yard dash, hurdles and relay races were run. Biggest secret ot the year was revealed on May 7 at the Honor Girl dance, when Virginia Rhea was crowned May Queen and Bonnie lean lennings as maid of honor. Identity ot the two girls was kept secret trom the time ot the election until more than a month later by three sopho- more girls, Nancy Robinson, Patty Lou Mclntyre and Hiroko Shintani. Werner Stern was selected as most popular boy and Don Galbreaith as runner-up. Lucille Laubaugh was chairman ot the Honor Girl dance, and the girls acted as her com- mittee. Co-chairmen ot the annual Honor Girl breakfast were lune Barker and Virginia Robertson. Honor girls included the following juniors and seniors: Carmen Aldecoa, Helen Marr Archibald, Kathleen Ash, Ann Barber, Dorothy Barbour, lune Barker, lane Barrett, Pauline Baxter, Elizabeth Bracken, Clive lane Brigham, Ruth Ann Cahoon, Helen Caine, Dorothy Coon, Valerie Delana, Norma Earmer, Elinore Finch, Emily Foster, Marcia Gwinn, ludith Hallstrom, Bonnie lean lennings, Lucille Laubaugh, Margaret Madarieta, Lois Malnati, Ruthye Mielecke, Bernice Perry, Lois Peterson, Alice Power, Virginia Rhea, Virginia Robertson, Roberta Rodgers, Anne Winstead, Betty lane Worley and Elizabeth Yriondo. That's good advice tor Boise high students but not always practicable. For instance, students must hang their coats and wraps in the cloakrooms, especially during bad weather. To protect property during school hours the school has a monitor system. At certain places in all halls at all periods ot the day students are stationed as monitors to supervise trattic. Every pupil who enters a cloakroom or who goes to his locker must sign a sheet at the monitor's desk. Thus a complete check is made oi students outside ot study hall or classes. Students who volunteer tor this service receive a halt credit a semester. Every period ot the school day in every class, teachers take attendance records and record them on slips. These records must be checked constantly under supervision of Miss Clara Otness, dean oi girls. There are also numerous errands that the ottice iorce has not time to take care ot. This work is entrusted to girl student orderlies, ot whom there are trom tive to ten each period ot the day. This year tor the first time these etticient wide-awake girls receive credit tor their work. When students are absent they telephone the homes to learn the reason. They take care of a huge amount ot the business side of school lite.
