An1ta McCune-Valedictorian Saluta tory Message Parents, teachers, friends, relatives, ad- ministration, and school board mem- bers, welcome to the commencement exercises of the 1973 Seniors of Boise City High School. On behalf of the graduating class of 1973 I bid you a hearty welcome. We also extend to each of you present, our heartfelt thanks for being here to share in this hour with us-one of the most important in our lives. For most of us and probably most of you, our high school years have passed far too swiftly, and are now at an end. We stand on the brink of a new-exciting and different way of life. You stand before us with your prayers and behind us with your teachings, hoping you have taught us what we will need to know. It has been said that The experience gathered from books is of the nature of learning, the experience gained from actual life is of the nature of wisdom, and a small store of the latter is worth vastly more than any stock of the former. First of all, an extra special thanks belongs to our parents for all of the things they have endured while raising us. To the school board and administration goes our thanks for seeing that we did not get too far out of line. And to our teachers we extend our thanks for their tolerance on both our good and bad days, and for their patience in teaching us what they believe we should know. A big thanks goes to everyone for putting up with us. ln his book THE PROPHET, Kahlil Gibran has expressed his beliefs on teaching like this: No man can reveal to you aught but that which already lies half asleep in the dawning of your knowledge. lf he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind. The astronomer may speak to you of his un- derstanding of space, but he cannot give you his understanding. For the vision of one man lends not its wings to another rnan. And even as each one of you stands alone in God's knowledge, so rnust each one of you be alone in his knowledge of God and in his understanding of the earth. Once again, WELCOME to the commencement exercises of the 1973 Seniors of Boise City High School. 86 Gayleen Ottinger-Salutatorian Alisa Ellard- Honor Student Va ledictory Address The time has come for us, the graduating class of 1973, to say our final farewells to Boise City High School. As we take these last steps of our childhood years and enter the world as adults, it is only fit- ting that we reflect upon our years of high school. We would like to express our appreciation to our parents, teachers, and board of education, who have given us this opportunity to obtain the knowledge necessary to succeed in today's world. To these, and to the underclassmen of Boise City High School, we say good-bye , We shall always regard our wonderful times together as fond memories, We shall always cherish the great friendships that were formed during our four years of high school. Now, with each senior let me share a few thoughts. As we leave this auditorium tonight for the final time as students at Boise City High School, let us remember that we are the master of our thoughts, the molder of our character, and the maker and shaper of condition, environment and destiny. We are now independent adults who must be responsible for our decisions. Therefore, we must contemplate each problem that arises as though our entire life depended on it, for each decision will influence our future. As a final thought, let me share the words of this famous poem with AN IN THE GLASS When you get what you want ln the struggle for gain, And the world makes you king for a davf lust go to the mirror and look at yourself And see what that man has to say. YOU: THE M It isn't your father or mother or wife Who judgment upon you must pass, The one whose verdict counts most in your life ls the one staring back in the glass. He's the one you must satisfy beyond all the rest For he is with you right up to the end, And you've passed your most difficult test lf the man in the glass is your friend. You may be one who got a good break Then think you're a wonderful guy, But the man in the glass says you're only a fake If you can't look him straight in the eye. You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years, And get pats on the back as you pass, A But your final reward will be heartaches and tears If you have cheated the man in the glass E l l l
