To whom it may concern: September 1934 ushered us, the members of the senior class, through the portals of Bogota High School. The first few weeks were an exciting jumble of new classes, crowded corridors, clubs, and homerooins. Then, having become acclimated, we held a class-meeting-boisterous and enthusiastic. The office of president was voted to Wilbtir Cernyg vice-president, james McGovern, secretary-treasurer, Frances Jones. As sophomores, we made our debut in society by entertaining at our Sophomore Hop, Likewise, we made our dramatic debut when the sophomore cast, coached by Miss Elizabeth Sanders presented The Nine Lives of Emily, a comedy, in the One-Act Play Contest. Our executive committee consisted of president, Anthony Savastanog vice-president, Thomas Sheehyg secretary, Fran- ces jones, treasurer, Eleanor Jerome. With an eye toward the necessary finances of the junior Prom, we juniors held a dance and a bake sale, both successful. Reelected president, An- thony Savastano was assisted in executive problems by the vice-president, Court- land Bartlumg and the secretary-treasurer, Ethel Moeller. A more experienced cast faced the footlights in our junior one-act play, a tragedy, Andante, again coached by Miss Sanders. Our triumphant senior year was begun by the election of Norman Zuber, president, Courtland Bartlum, vice-president, Phyllis Frech, secretary, and Anthony Savastano, treasurer. The senior play, another bake sale and a dance helped defray expenses of the year book, while the dramatically inclined took part in the One-Act Play Contest by presenting the forceful tragedy, lle. To our principal, advisers, and teachers for their patience, excellent ex- ample, encouragement, and advice, we express our sincere thanks. THE CLASS OF 1958. The faculty advisers through the three years have been Mrs. Harry Geair and Mr. Howard Ross. The class's dramatic status was definitely established when, for the second consecutive year, the entry of the class of '39 took top honors in the Annual One-Act Play Contest. The Wedding, coached by Mr. Vifilliam Simpson, also produced the best actor in the person of Wzllter Penfield who succeeds Arthur Ellmers, also a member of the cast of this year's winner. The Wedding represented Bogota at the Little Theater League Contest. The Sophomore Hop and junior Dance were both outstanding successes socially and financially. The junior Prom, the climax to the school's social season and the most important event of the year, was in every way a great success. Having completed three years, upon which it can look with pride and satisfaction, the class of l959 looks into the future with a mixed feeling of anticipation and wonder. At the first class meeting, fresh- men activities were planned and officers were elected. Those chosen for officers were: Albert Noriega, presidentg Mahlon Kenny, vice- presidentg Marjorie Palmisano, treasurer, Marion Schussler, secretary. As freshmen, the class of '40 sponsored a successful card party and took an active part in the One-Act Play Contest with the presentation of The Dys- peptic Ogre. The class advisers for that year were Miss Doris Davey and Mr, Harry Geair. The class was sorry to lose Mr. Geair in its sophomore year, but he was ably replaced by Mr. George Hance. As sophomores, the Class of '40 was joined by the Maywood students. At a class meeting, the following new officers were elected: Eugene Kenny, presidentg Thomas Long, vice-presidentg Albert Noriega, secretary, Mahlon Kenny, treasurer. On April 8, the class sponsored the Sophomore Hop. which was well attended by students and alumni. The class also participated in the One-Act Play Contest with A Message From Khufun as its entry. The following week, the Buccaneers trooped up to Roosevelt Common in Tenafly, to play the powerful Tiger eleven. After taking an early lead, the Bucs once again ran into bad luck and had to be content with a 9-9 tie. The Bucs resumed an old rivalry the next week by defeating Hacken- sack 21-15, in a high scoring game. The following week with its league championship on the line, the Bo- gota eleven confidently invaded the lair of the Ramsey Rams After a doubtful start, the Bucs quickly submerged the Ramseyites 19-0 and clinched a second B. C. I. L. championship. The undefeated, highly-touted Cardinals of Pompton invaded Bogota the following week intent on notching their twenty-third consecutive victory. A packed house saw the Bucs go into the lead on a touchdown pass, Finelli to Bud Kenny, only to succumb to the superior manpower of their rivals and lose a disheartening 20-7 thriller. It was a badly-battered and physically tired Buc eleven that took the field on Election Day for its annual Ballot Day Classic with a well-rested St. Cecilia eleven. The result was an emphatic 27-7 loss to the highly-powered running attack of the visitors. Well-rested and strengthened by the return of several of their injured players, the Bogotaites played an improved and excellent brand of ball against Ridgefield Park, but the all-around finesse of the Parkers proved too much. and the Bucs suffered their third consecutive loss, 19-0. Back at full strength the Buccaneers turned on their full power against Teaneck and gave a forceful exhibition in squelching the Highwaymen, 38-0. A powerful, resourceful Bogota team, clicking on all cylinders, all but ran a weak Leonia team off the field on Thanksgiving Day to triumph, 33-0 and this closed the season. Bogota players received ample reward for their labors on the turf during the season on the honorary teams picked by the Record. Swede Hanson re- ceived a tackle berth on the All-County team as well as on the league team. johnny Finelli, Bud Kenny, and Herb Meisse were also selected on the All- League Team. Blond- thatched jim Simons topped the Buccaneer scoring with five points. The following week the purple and gold hoopsters traveled to Teaneck to face the blue and white Highwaymen. In a thrilling surge from behind, the Bucs won out in an overtime period, 19-17. Freddy Brunn's lay-up shot de- cided the fray in favor of the Bogotaites. Witli their first win safely recorded, the Bucs had the misfortune to run into the powerful scarlet of Ridgefield Park in their next game. From the outset of the contest, flashy Al Vendeweghe and Co. proved too much for the Bucs, with the final score reading 33-ll in favor of the Parkers. The Bucs chances of retaining their league crown was reduced to mere hope, when they dropped a close 32-24 decision at Hasbrouck Heights. Pivot- man, Freddy Brunn, paced the Bucs with ten digits. Sensational shooting by diminutive Frankie Schmitt in the closing quarter enabled the Buccaneers to end their losing ways with a 20-14 win over Du- mont. The young freshman also led the Bogota scoring with fourteen points. The Buccaneers didn't seem to be able to stand prosperity, however, and they promptly went back into their losing ways by dropping their third league game to Tenafly 26-22. The reliable Brunn again led the Buc scoring, with eight points, The following week, the Bucs set out for their annual long trek to Pompton Lakes to play the mountainous Cardinals. Mr. Everett I-Iebel, the finan- cially-minded founder of the tournament, drastically changed the system of operation that had been in use ever since the organization of the loop. Instead of the customary one big-group, he divided it into two smaller leagues, which automatically insured a championship play-off between the winners of the two divisions. At the outset of the season. there appeared to be only one team above par. This was the N. Y. U. team, which for years as a Little Ferry representa- tive had put an outstanding quintet on the floor. The other eleven lives com- prised what appeared to be one of the weakest groups of teams ever to com- pete in the intra-mural competition. However, the myth concerning the poyer of N. Y. U. was quickly ex- ploded, when a surprising Dartmouth team.led by jim Simons, who played in this game only due to his position on the varsity squad, eked out a 12-ll win. The Big Green went on from there to dominate the A group and even- tually wound up with the title in that loop. although a steadily improving Army team tied them in the course of the season. In the B group. with the race wide open, a smooth-working Manhattan live gradually moved out into the lead and then easily coasted undefeated to the championship. Fordham, coming back from an early defeat. played line ball until the team suffered another loss in its last game. Army, coming fast near the end of the season, seemed to be the next best quintet to Dartmouth in the A group. The play-olf for the championship was run on the two out of three game basisg that is, the first team winning two games was the winner, The all- around linesse and smoothness of Manhattan made this team a slight favorite to snag the laurels. True to form, Manhattan outpassed and outshot a hapless Dartmouth team in the first game to win easily. The sensational set-shots of Kilcoyne proved entirely too much for the ragged Class A representative. Then came the surprise of surprises, the previously forlorn Dartmouth team came back the following week to stop the vaunted attack of its rivals to win out in a close tilt, ll-7. In the third and deciding game, however, the true power of Manhattan once again asserted itself ,and the players went on quickly to trounce the ln- dians and clinch the title. Mr. Hebel found time also during the hectic basketball campaign to orig- inate an All-Star game composed of the seven best players of each league to compete against each other. Group B conclusively proved its superiority by overwhelming its rivals 29-17 in a dull contest. Hoyer and Kilcoyne paced the attacks for their respec- tive leagues. -fozo' 1938 Purple B A . vga, , ..,,A,,.. a . , . , , . . A y. . Q .. s 1 4' J-',. - ,wa . Growing Pains was re- markably suited to the ability of student actors because it depicted an episode in the turbulent life of two growing children. George and Terry McIntyre. During the action of the play, Terry, the tomboy daughter of Pro- fessor and Mrs. Mclntyre, finds a certain value in growing up, wearing high heels and acting sophisticated, while her brother isn't very far behind in his desire for a car. Much to the anxiety of their gracious parents, the high heels and the car are acquired, but the novelty of these grown-up playthings soon wears off when the children discover that they can have more fun if they remain young. A tense moment is introduced when the family, hearing a rifle shot, believes that George has shot himself in remorse over the loss of his girl. aidffl' The parts of Terry and George were taken by Lucille Herrmann and Arthur Duhaine, while Gloria Gonzalez and Courtland liartlum played the distraught father and mother. An overbearing neighbor, Mrs. Patterson, was played by Marion Fuchs, while Ethel Moeller admirably took the role of her timorous but affectionate daughter, Elsie. Georges friends were numerous and were played by Albert Bullwinkel, George Cummings, Raymond Mech- bach, Gerald Schoem, and Robert Peary. The traffic officer, whose business like manner caused him to receive a well-placed punch, was characterized by Richard Howard. The part of the MacIntyre's maid was played by Harriet Struckman. Helen Decheneaux, Mary Keating, Marjorie Roberts, and Alice Henych took the part of Terry's pals. The role of Prudence Darling. the vamp, was taken by Lillian Bauer. The play was admirably coached by Miss Gladys E. However, comedy won over tragedy, and the juniors took the en- visioned diadem from the heads of the seniors. The winning play, coached by William C. Walter Penfield, leading man, was awarded the best actor's medal for his representation of a harassed bridegroom seeking his collar button just before time for the wedding ceremony. Complications set in in the form of the bride, Marie Lorenzo, but through the efforts of a conceited best man, played admirably by Arthur Elmers, everything ended happily. During the play, it was necessary to have a soloist sing Oh Promise Me. Fortunately, Mr. Howard Rampe was available to surprise and delight the audience with his interpretation. The setting for the senior play, Ile, by Eugene O'Neil, was on an ice bound whaling schooner. Gloria Gonzalez played the part of the captains wife who went insane because of the monotony and brutality of the life. For her acting, Gloria was presented with the best actress's award. Gerald Schoem played the role of the blustering bullying captain. The play was coached by Mr. George Dukes. This year the sophomore class was again given a play with an all boy cast. The members showed surprising talent in the play, A Message from Khufuf' coached by Miss Lillian E. Nast. Two Crooks and a Lady, the freshman entry, showed that future con- tests will have to watch the class of '41 closely. Grace Millner was outstand- ing in this play for her presentation of the crippled old lady. Miss Elizabeth Sanders coached the play. Miss Gladys Whyte was the director for the four plays. The judges in- cluded Mrs. Lillian O. Sachtleban, Mrs. F. Gibbons, and Mayor john D. Lynn. Page Slrfif fri c Purple B 1938 1 ,,,, STUDENT CGUNCIL SICKOND ROW -H.u1m.um, Plnlupp. Wvlvu, Lnuwig, Gnuvv.
