as.a.a.11, M PURPL thing wrong. The typewriter-or if he had forgotten to take out the old ribbon. No, not that-he distinctly remembered hearing Spud hx the machine, and placing the material on the desk. These thoughts Hashed through his mind in a split second. '1 'W Spud did, of course. Wlly, anything wrong? No, no. I was just wondering. Well. joseph, I must be going, but I'll tell you this much. Your thesis was a wonderful effort. I know you can do great things, if you will only try. Of course you will pass. Good-bye and good luck. The professor closed the door and was gone. joe sat back among the pillows and rested. He was tired, very tired,- but happy. His thesis was good, fthe professor had said so, himself, and that was unusual. Well, he had fooled SkinHint, after all. as as as The clock ticked its chanty-''try-try-try-try''-Itme lay curled asleep in the arm chair, with a contented smile on his face. The November wind moaned and howled outside, and the small, htful glare of the table lamp cast its light on the typewriter without a ribbon. wasgasvafas. PURPLE B t.4sga.v.4r-aa fffnqi .Jana Page Nirrcfy-fum' I hope Prexy breaks his neck on the way here to get the comp. So long and good luckf, 5 joe sat for some time in his chair. He wondered if he should do it. fXY'ould Hawkins take the loss of his eyesight as an excuse? No, Guess not NY'ell, I'll fool the old buzzard and do it anywayj. He got up and groped for the card table and hauled it over in front of his easy chair. He placed the typewriter and other materials on the table. Then he plugged in the socket of the electric perculator, and rolled up his sleeves. Finally, he sat down in the chair and leaned back trying to form the thesis in his mind. Suddenly he sat up and began hammering away at the typewriter. Word after word, line after line, only stopping to change paper, and shift the type- writer at the sound of the bell. After a time, he sat back to rest his aching head, and to take a drink of hot, black coffee. At a quarter of eleven, he drew the last page out of the machine, and stacked the papers in an orderly pile on the table. He then sat back to wait. He had, there, a thesis that was worth an A any day. Most likely the old buzzard expects to find the thesis not even started, and is prepared to give me a lecture. As the bell in the chapel tower struck eleven, a gentle tap was heard on the door. COME IN, yelled Joe-not very invitingly. The professor stepped in, with a polite I trust that you are feeling well this evening, Mr. Grantleyf' Yeh, pretty good. XXfliy-ereah whats happened to your eyes, Joseph? Uh, I caught a cold in the rain at the game, got hit behind the ear, and when I got home, I rushed right out again to a swell feed and dance. Got home late, or, rather, I should say, early, and awoke at six this evening. The doctor says that the dampness, the sock on my head, and the noise and bright lights last night are the causes of my temporary loss of sight. I'm very sorry to see you in such a predicament, but if you had only taken ample precaution against-. Yeh, I know all about it. I had one lecture already from the doctor, cut in joe. If you want the thesis, it's on the desk. You'd do me a favor if you would tell me what you think of it. I did it in spite of my blindness. These last statements were spoken belligerently. The professor picked up the neatly folded papers, and began scanning them,ka bit too hastilye-thought joe. The professor opened his lips to speak, but closed them again. He slowly walked to the side of 'Ioe's chair, and looked down intently at the typewriter, and then at joe. joe hated the silence and felt the eyes of the professor on his face. It made him nervous and worried. NVell, he said, is it all right. Yes, I believe it is. By the way, who lixed your typewriter, and got your writing material ? joe felt a sinking feeling in his stomach. Maybe Spud had done some-

Louis was looking over the books, while Stan looked over the applicants for an open secretarial position, He finally picked a cute little blond, Dot Ritchie. I liked his choice but Louis' fiancee Grace Hesselman, voiced a loud and lengthy protest. She was going strong as I left. Have to hit the hay early. Must get 6 o'clock plane to Pittsburgh. january 22, 1952, Piff.if21f1'glv Been here three days. Had three big interviews. First was Frank Bud Sullivan the wildman of the wrestling ring. Between practice grunts and groans he told me he owed his success to two men, Walt Reichart, his manager, and XXfalt McGinn, his diving partner. Next saw Park Cable fknown to his friends as Park Hamiltonj, who is on his way to the coast to make a new pic- ture with Margaret Franz, professionally known as Margreta Marbo. Park will show me Hollywood when I get there. My last questionaire was directed at Wiilt Gibbs, U. S. Steel Corp, president, a hard man to see. I had to argue with his secretary. Anthony Manzolino, for a half hour to talk for five minutes with Gibbs. He owes his success to hard work in high school. Am staying at the Hotel Carruth, one of the chain of the Pousson Hotels, Inc.
