V ou are There Early last May 1954 the Jun1or and Sen1or Classes here at Boggstown School made a tr1p to Wash1ngton D C The tr1p followed a schedule arranged by M1ller Tours Inc of Ind1anapol1s A representat1ve of that company went on the tour w1th us as the1r agent and our gu1de We left Boggstown on the early morn1ng of May 10 and pass1ng through Dayton Oh1o made our way to that day s dest1nat1on Clarksburg West V1rg1n1a Clarksburg was the b1rthplace of Stonewall Jackson the famous Confederate general dur1ng the C1v1l War Although the c1ty IS not large lt has an engag1ng and var1ed h1story and was therefore 1nterest1ng to all of us We spent our f1rst n1ght at Clarksburg and aga1n got an early start the follow1ng mornmg That day s objectxve was Wash1ngton Before enter1ng the Cap1tal C1ty how ever we stopped at Ft Myer Vlrglnla where the Arl1ngton Nat1onal Cemetery 1S1O cated Among the bu1ld1ngs and memor1al structures located there IS the old home of Robert E Lee known as the Lee MQHSIOH the Tomb of the Unknown Sold1er and the Arl1ngton Memor1al Amph1theater The Changlng of the honorary m1l1tary guard on the east front of the Amph1theater where the Tomb IS located const1tutes an 1mpress1ve ceremony that always attracts a crowd We were fortunate 1n Seelng lt After leavmg the Cemetery we entered Wash1ngton a.nd proceeded d1rectly to our hotel The Annapol1s We were 1n Wash1ngton for two n1ghts and one and one half days Wh1le there we saw the L1ncoln and Jefferson Memor1als and the Nat1onal Art Gallery on a n1ght tour of the c1ty The effect of these wh.1te 11mestone and marble ed1f1ces 1S enhanced at n1ght by the l1ght1ng techmques employed by the1r caretakers Other h1gh hghts of our WaSh1ngt0n tour were the Cap1tal Bu1ld1r1g where we saw the Senate 1n sess1on and the Wh1te House through wh1ch we were conducted after a long wa1t outs1de the grounds Other attract1ons 1n Wash1ngton for us were the Wash1ngton Monument the Sm1thson1an lnst1tut1on and the U S M1nt About s1xteen m1les south of Wash1ngton 1S Mt Vernon the h1stor1cal home of George Wash1ngton We were allowed to tour the grounds gardens and bu1ld1ngs by our selves 1nstead of be1ng w1th gu1des We were furmshed a map of the ent1re estate and thus could go wherever we w1shed The next Clty we v1s1ted on the tr1p was Annapol1s Maryland home of the famous Naval Academy We took an extended tour of the Academy observ1ng the undergraduates 1n a few of the1r var1ous act1v1t1es Dr1ll maneuvers on board the sh1ps 1n Dewey Bas1n a man made harbor engaged our attent1on for many m1nutes The harbors seemed to be always HCt1Ve w1th naval launches and tra1n1ng craft Agam resum1ng our tr1p we traveled north to Ba1t1more where we spent another n1ght The next morn1ng we went to Gettysburg Pennsylvanxa s1te of the famous Battle of Gettysburg 1n 1863 Many monuments have been establ1shed at Gettysburg to the part1c1pants 1n that battle F1eld art1llery have been placed on exh1b1t 1n presumably the same battle l1nes 1n wh1ch they were used They are promment everywhere over the many acres of ground composlng the battle f1e1d Perhaps outstand1ng among all the monuments and memor1als there 1S the Eternal L1ght Peace Memor1al wh1ch commemorates the reconc1l1at1on of the Un1on and Confederate peoples after the war The 1mpos1ng memorxal to Abraham L1ncoln and h1s Gettysburg address stands near where that famous speech was del1vered Gettysburg 15 one of the famous battles of m1l1ta.ry history. 1 .v I ' U , .
