Jacks Pound Demons The heated rivalry continued . . .andthe Jacks went home victorious by whipping the Franklinton Demons 66-56. The Jacks, unanimous favorites to win the 8-AAA ti- tle, led 31-24 at the half. They opened day- light in the third quarter, outscoring the Demons 19-9, to lead by l7, 50-33, heading into the final quarter. Bogalusa fought back a Franklinton rally for the 10 point spread. Jacks Weather The Storm Over Salmen The Jacks led the Salmen Spartans 37- 24 deep into the third quarter, and blowoutsville seemed only a basket or two away. Those baskets never came. Salmen climbed back into it to turn what appeared to be a no contest into a bitter struggle. Finally, the Jacks weathered the storm for a 57-55 triumph in a contest matching the best two teams in District 8-AAA. Lumberjacks Comeback Sinks Jackets The game was tied 35-all at the half. Mt. Hermon opened up a six-point lead entering the final period by outscoring Bogalusa 13- 7 in the third quarter. So at the end of three quarters, the Jacks were trailing the Mt. Hermon Yellowjackets 48-42. Then all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. The Jacks took over the game on both ends of the floor in the final period, outscored the Jackets 24-13, and walked off with a 67-62 win. Jacks Are Beaten 57-55 At Amite The Amite Warriors whipped the Jacks 57-55 in a battle for first place in District 8- AAA. The Jacks trailed by six in the fourth quarter before rallying to take a one-point lead, 53-52, with three minutes left. Plum- mer drilled in three straight baskets to key the rally. The two clubs ping-ponged the lead back and forth until, with one second remaining, Bruce Plummer fouled Willie Jackson in the backcourt. Jackson dropped in two free throws to break the 55-all tie. 70 Basketball -2'

Jacks Whips Kentwood The Jacks blasted the Kentwood Kanga- roos 77-52. The Jacks had an easy time with Kentwood, leading 18-13 and stretch- ing it to 41-27 at the half. The lead grew throughout the second half. .lacks Exorcise the Demons The Bogalusa Lumberjacks whipped the Franklinton Demons 58-48 to capture the Franklinton Invitational Tournament. But- ter Lundie and Bruce Plummer were named to the boys' all-tourney team. In the Bogalusa-Franklinton showdown, the Jacks stepped to a 31-25 lead at the half, expanded it to 41-32 entering the fourth quarter, and fought offa Demon ral- ly to pull out the win. BHS Slips By Varnado The Lumberjacks scored a thrilling 68- 64 win over the Varnado Wildcats in front ofa large audience swelled by the Bogalusa High student body. The loss was the first for Varnado after 10 wins to open the sea- son. The .Iacks trailed 30-27 at the half, but came storming back in the third quarter to grab a 49-40 spread entering the final eight minutes. The Cats roared back to close the gap 64-62 with 30 seconds remaining, but two free throws iced the Jacks' win. .lacks Edge Ponchatoula Lumberjacks, holding off a furious fourth quarter rally, whipped Ponchatoula 56-54 in the District 8-AAA opener for both schools. The Jacks were seemingly in total command at the end of the third quar- ter, leading 46-32. l. 1983 Lumberjacks: Tim Thompson, George Var- nado, Mike Brister, Butter Lundie, Rogie Magee, Lee Gallaspy, Sean Smith, Bruce Plummer, Kevin Henry, Chav Pierce, Julian Powell, Clay Foreman. 2. .lacks Pop Greenies The Jacks popped the Ponchatoula Green Wave 68-40 with all five starters scoring in double figures. The Jacks were sluggish in the first half, leading just l2-8 at the end of the first quarter and 22- 16 at the half. But the Jacks blew the contest wide open in the third quarter, using a full- court press to come up with numerous steals and layups. The quarter ended with Boga- lusa ahead 42-28. The lead continued to swell in the fourth quarter, reaching 65-38. Lumberjacks Nipped St. Pauls's The Lumberjacks nipped St. Paul's 38- 37 on Bruce Plummer's 23-foot jumper with ll seconds remaining. St. Paul's had an opportunity to score with four seconds left, but Rogie Magee soared high into the air to swat away a St. Paul's shot and secure the win. This game gave the .lacks a 4-0 lead in league play, and put them first in the district, as expected. Jacks Win In Overtime Matching the Jacks and the Demons is like dropping a match into a gasoline tank . . . an explosion is guaranteed. The Jacks scored a 6l-59 overtime win over the De- mons in a key District 8-AAAbattle. Victo- ry came for the .lacks with one second re- maining when Mike Brister hit a layup after taking a perfect pass from Butter Lundie. Lundie had the ball at the top of the key and was closely guarded by two Demons. He went up for what appeared to be a desperation jumper, then, at the last second, spotted Brister and softly laid the ball off the glass, as Lumberjack fans erupted in pandemonium. Pack Stuns Jacks The St. Paul Wolves, with 21 seconds remaining in the game, got a crucial three- point play, to shock the Jacks 58-56 in a District 8-AAA battle. The .lacks were in serious foul trouble throughout the contest. 1, Going for the jump ball is Chav. Pierce 2. Sean Smith looks for the rebound. 3. Blocking a shot is Brucc Plummer. 4. Trying to gain possession of the ball is Mike Brister. 5. Going for the ball is Julian Powell. 6. Lee Gallaspy goes for the layup. Basketball 71
