English, Foreign Language, Speech Provide Varied Study When students enter high school, a list of required subjects is often the first thing they obtain. Your typical fresh- man might gasp in horror as he reads English I, II, III, and IV-required credits. We've all been through the traumas of sentence diagramming, yet English at Bogalusa High offered the opportunity to learn more than just grammer. Students experience famous novels and short stories. Their eyes were also opened to poetry and its meanings, a study of mythology, and the learning experience of writing com- postions and research papers. As one soon discovers, English is more than learning and relearning grammar, it is a whole great world of knowledge and imagination unveiled for every stu- dents' benefit. Speech deals with self-expression. Students are placed in all kinds of speaking situations ranging from sim- ple conversation to public address to de- bates. Speech students also work on sets and stage management in preparation for presenting the class play. Our foreign language department provides an intense study of French, Spanish, and Latin. Students learn pro- nunciation, sentence structure, and verb forms. Along with writing exer- cises, foreign language students prac- tice listening and speaking skills. The mind-broadening experience of these classes definitely gives students a touch of continental class. l. Christmas pinatas were enjoyed by all the Spanish classes. 2. Practice Makes Perfect Mathematics is a highly special- ized and complicated subject that re- quires an excessive amount of devo- tion. Precision and accuracy are a definite necessity. The course itself is an exception in that it does not get easier as one becomes more familiar with it. The deeper one gets into the format, the more involved and more rigid it becomes. The one thing that does make it easier is familiarity and practice. The only time a concept be- comes easy is when one has worked a problem a countless number of times. 1. Senior Paul Williams types in the latest as- signment for Mr. Horne's computer science class. 2. Mathematics Departmental Award Winners: Joel Patrick, Geometry: Denny Knight, Algebra ll: Rick Thompson, Algebra I. 3. Calvin Martin and Byron Adams sure look like they would like to forget their Algebra I assignment. ll' 104 Academics
